MLB Capsules (April 12, 2016)

BOSTON (AP) Chris Davis hit a tiebreaking, three-run homer off new Boston closer Craig Kimbrel in the ninth inning and drove in five runs, carrying the Baltimore Orioles over the Red Sox 9-7 Monday in David Ortiz's final home opener.

Kimbrel (0-1), the All-Star reliever acquired in an offseason trade from San Diego, entered with the score 6-6. He walked Caleb Joseph with one out and Manny Machado with two outs, then gave up Davis' home run to center on a 97 mph pitch.

Mookie Betts homered off Zach Britton leading off the bottom half, and Boston had two on and no outs when Ortiz grounded into a double play. Britton then struck out Hanley Ramirez for his third save.

Brad Brach (2-0) pitched a perfect eighth. The Orioles improved to 6-0 and remain the lone unbeaten team in the major leagues. They had been shut out in their previous three trips to Fenway, outscored 17-0.

WHITE SOX 4, TWINS 1

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Austin Jackson hit a two-run, two-out single in the fourth inning, one pitch after just missing a grand slam, and Minnesota dropped to 0-7 with a loss in its home opener. It is the worst start for the franchise since the original Washington Senators lost their first 13 games in 1904, according to STATS.

Jose Quintana (1-0) completed six smooth innings with one run allowed for the White Sox, who have won five of their first seven.

Twins starter Kyle Gibson (0-2) was charged with one earned run over 5 2/3 innings.

PIRATES 7, TIGERS 4

DETROIT (AP) - Gregory Polanco had two of Pittsburgh's six doubles, and the Pirates chased Justin Verlander during the fifth inning. Verlander (0-1) allowed seven runs and 10 hits - five of them doubles - in 4 1-3 innings.

Jonathan Niese (1-0) gave up four runs - three earned - and five hits in six innings. Matt Melancon pitched a one-hit ninth for his third save.

PADRES 4, PHILLIES 3

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Alexi Amarista's safety squeeze in the seventh scored the go-ahead run in Philadelphia's home opener.

Wil Myers hit a solo homer for the Padres, who benefited from a strange double play and two video reviews going their way.

Kevin Quackenbush (1-0) struck out the only batter he faced, and Fernando Rodney pitched the ninth for his first save for the Padres.

Aaron Nola (0-2) allowed four runs and six hits, striking out a career-best nine in seven innings.

CARDINALS 10, BREWERS 1

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Michael Wacha (1-0) allowed four hits in six scoreless innings, and St. Louis had 10 extra-base hits in its home opener.

Jeremy Hazelbaker was 4 for 4 with a triple, double and sacrifice fly, lifting his average to .526, and fellow rookie Almedys Diaz had two doubles.

Yadier Molina had three hits, two RBIs and an uncontested steal off Taylor Jungmann (0-1).

MLB Capsules (April 11, 2016)

DENVER (AP) Rookie Trevor Story capped his amazing first week in the majors by hitting his seventh home run, helping the Colorado Rockies beat the San Diego Padres 6-3 Sunday.

Story's homer was one of five solo shots by the Rockies. Carlos Gonzalez went deep twice and Nolan Arenado and Ryan Raburn also connected for Colorado, which salvaged the finale of its three-game series.

Story, whose home run streak ended Friday night after he had become the first player in the majors to homer in the first four games of his career, sent a pitch from Brandon Maurer 425 feet into the left field bleachers leading off the bottom of the eighth.

The shortstop now has 12 RBIs through six games.

ORIOLES 5, RAYS 3

BALTIMORE (AP) — Manny Machado went 4 for 4 with a two-run homer, and Baltimore beat Tampa Bay to remain the only undefeated team in the majors.

The 5-0 start matches the 1970 team for the best in Orioles history. After sweeping Minnesota in three games to open the season, Baltimore completed the homestand by taking two from Tampa Bay in a rain-abbreviated series.

Vance Worley gave up three runs over 4 2-3 innings in his Orioles debut and the bullpen blanked the Rays on one hit the rest of the way. Brad Brach (1-0) entered in the fifth and Zach Britton worked a perfect ninth for his second save.

South Korean outfielder Hyun Soo Kim made his major league debut for Baltimore, starting in left field and batting ninth. He got two infield hits and went 2 for 3.

CUBS 7, DIAMONDBACKS 3

PHOENIX (AP) — Jake Arrieta homered and pitched seven innings, helping Chicago finish off an impressive first week by beating Arizona.

Chicago is tied with Cincinnati for the best record in the NL at 5-1. The Cubs host the Reds in their home opener Monday night at Wrigley Field.

Arrieta (2-0) allowed three runs and eight hits, striking out six. The reigning NL Cy Young Award winner gave himself a boost with a two-out, two-run homer in the second inning off Shelby Miller (0-1).

Arrieta hit two home runs in 2015 and has three in his career.

GIANTS 9, DODGERS 6

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Joe Panik hit a tiebreaking two-run double in the sixth inning and San Francisco homered three times to overcome an early five-run deficit and beat Los Angeles.

Buster Posey, Brandon Belt and Angel Pagan all homered as the Giants rallied after falling behind 5-0 before they even came up to bat. San Francisco has 14 homers in the opening week of the season and the Giants have hit at least one homer in the first seven games for the first time since at least 1913.

Johnny Cueto (2-0) settled down after the rough first and earned the win in his home debut for the Giants, allowing six runs and 10 hits in seven innings. Santiago Casilla got three outs for his second save as San Francisco took three of four from its fiercest rival.

PHILLIES 5, METS 2

NEW YORK (AP) -- Odubel Herrera hit a two-run homer off Matt Harvey in the first appearance at Citi Field for the Mets ace since he failed to close out Game 5 of last year's World Series, and Philadelphia beat New York.

Philadelphia won the last two games of the three-game series after an 0-4 start. The Phillies already have more wins at Citi Field this season than last, when they went 1-8.

Jeremy Hellickson (1-0) held the Mets hitless until Yoenis Cespedes lined an opposite-field single to right in the fourth, and kept them scoreless until Cespedes chased him with a two-run homer in the sixth that cut Philadelphia's lead to 3-2.

The NL champions dropped to 2-3 — their record before 11-game winning streaks in 1986 and last year.

Pitching on the Citi Field mound for the first time since manager Terry Collins allowed him to try to finish a shutout against Kansas City, Harvey (0-2) gave up three runs and six hits in six innings.

ROYALS 4, TWINS 3, 10 INNINGS

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Speedy pinch runner Terrance Gore streaked home on a wild pitch with two outs in the 10th inning, scoring with a headfirst slide to lift Kansas City over winless Minnesota.

The World Series champion Royals rallied for two runs in the ninth to tie it, then dropped the Twins to 0-6. This is Minnesota's worst start since the Washington Senators moved to the Twin Cities in 1961.

Christian Colon drew a leadoff walk in the 10th from Trevor May (0-1). Gore then made his first appearance of the season, running for Colon, and dashed to third on May's throwing error on a pickoff attempt.

May retired the next two batters and issued a walk. With a 1-2 count on Lorenzo Cain, May threw a breaking ball that bounced off catcher John Ryan Murphy's chest protector and skittered to the right side of the plate.

Gore beat Murphy's throw to May covering the plate. May slammed down his hand in frustration after Gore scored.

ATHLETICS 2, MARINERS 1, 10 INNINGS

SEATTLE (AP) — Coco Crisp hit a two-out homer in the 10th inning to help Oakland overcome a dominant outing from Seattle ace Felix Hernandez and sweep the three-game series.

Hernandez struck out 10 over seven scoreless innings, allowing three hits and two walks.

Oakland's Marcus Semien hit a homer to lead off the eighth against Joel Peralta, tying the game 1-1.

Crisp hit his no-doubter to right field off Nick Vincent (1-1).

John Axford (1-0) pitched a scoreless ninth and Sean Doolittle struck out two in the 10th to earn his first save.

Chris Bassitt allowed one unearned run in seven innings for Oakland.

YANKEES-TIGERS, PPD

DETROIT (AP) — The Detroit Tigers' game against the New York Yankees was postponed because of rain.

With light rain falling and no end in sight, the game was called off several hours before the scheduled first pitch.

Justin Verlander had been scheduled to make his second start of the season for the Tigers, while the Yankees planned to send Masahiro Tanaka to the mound.

A makeup date was not immediately announced. The teams aren't scheduled to meet again in Detroit this season.

BLUE JAYS 3, RED SOX 0

TORONTO (AP) — Marco Estrada pitched seven shutout innings, Josh Donaldson hit a solo home run and Toronto beat Boston, avoiding a three-game sweep.

Activated off the 15-day disabled list before the game after missing the start of the season with a sore lower back, Estrada (1-0) gave up five hits, walked two and struck out eight, helping Toronto win for the first time in five games.

Drew Storen worked the eighth and Roberto Osuna finished for his third save to complete the seven-hitter.

The Red Sox came up empty after scoring at least six runs and getting at least 10 hits in each of their first four games of the season.

REDS 2, PIRATES 1

CINCINNATI (AP) — Jay Bruce hit an RBI triple in the ninth inning and Cincinnati capped a strong season-opening homestand, beating Pittsburgh.

The Reds took two of three from the Pirates and are off to a 5-1 start.

Brandon Phillips led off the ninth with a single. After a popout, Bruce tripled down the right field line against Arquimedes Caminero (0-1).

Former Pirates right-hander Ross Ohlendorf (2-0) escaped a first-and-second, one-out jam in the ninth to get the win.

Eugenio Suarez opened the Reds sixth with his fourth home run of the season, tying at 1. He had three hits in the game.

ANGELS 3, RANGERS 1

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Jered Weaver pitched six effective innings in his injury-delayed season debut, and Los Angeles beat Texas to earn a split of the four-game series.

Mike Trout got his first two RBIs of the season and Albert Pujols also singled home a run for Los Angeles, which bounced back after losing two in a row.

Weaver (1-0) allowed a run and six hits en route to his 139th career win — passing Nolan Ryan for second on the franchise list behind Chuck Finley's 165. The veteran right-hander's outing was held up because of nerve problems in his neck and shoulder.

Texas left-hander Martin Perez (0-1) was charged with three runs, seven hits and a career-worst five walks in 6 1/3 innings.

BREWERS 3, ASTROS 2

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Jimmy Nelson struck out nine in six-plus innings, and Milwaukee took advantage of early wildness by Houston ace Dallas Keuchel in a win.

The AL Cy Young Award winner walked four in the first inning and gave up a two-run single to Aaron Hill. Keuchel (1-1) left with two outs in the sixth with a career high-tying six walks, including an intentional pass to Ryan Braun in the fourth.

Domingo Santana added an RBI double in the fourth for rebuilding Milwaukee, which took two of three in the interleague series against the AL West contenders.

Nelson (1-1) settled down after allowing a leadoff homer to deep left to Jose Altuve on the game's first pitch. Jeremy Jeffress pitched a perfect ninth for his third save.

INDIANS-WHITE SOX, PPD

CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago White Sox's game against the Cleveland Indians was postponed because of rain.

The game will be made up on May 23 as part of a doubleheader.

The Indians have had three games rained out so far this season. The White Sox and Indians split the first two games of their series.

CARDINALS 12, BRAVES 7

ATLANTA (AP) — Brandon Moss and Matt Carpenter hit three-run homers and St. Louis kept Atlanta as the only NL team without a win.

The Braves (0-5) also lost right-hander Dan Winkler, who suffered a fractured right elbow while throwing a pitch in the seventh. He left the mound in obvious pain after throwing a pitch behind Randal Grichuk.

The Cardinals completed the three-game sweep despite a poor start from Adam Wainwright, who allowed five runs in five innings.

After rallying for a 7-6 lead in the eighth, the Cardinals put the game away with five runs in the ninth to score 12 runs for the second straight day. Aledmys Diaz hit a two-run double off Jose Ramirez in the ninth before Carpenter's three-run homer.

NATIONALS 4, MARLINS 2

WASHINGTON (AP) — Jayson Werth had an RBI single for his first hit of the season and Joe Ross allowed a run in seven innings to help Washington to a victory over Miami.

Bryce Harper hit the 99th and 100th doubles of his career and drove in the Nationals' first run as Washington split a two-game series after Saturday's postponement because of cold weather.

Anthony Rendon went 3 for 5 with a double and scored twice. Clint Robinson's two-run single completed Washington's three-run seventh.

Jonathan Papelbon gave up a ninth-inning home run to Miami's Christian Yelich, but still earned his third save.

Tom Koehler (0-1) allowed two runs in 6 1/3 innings.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) Ian Kennedy pitched impressively into the seventh inning in his Kansas City debut and the Royals hit their first three home runs of the season to beat the winless Minnesota Twins 7-0 Saturday night.

The Twins fell to 0-5 for the first time since the Washington Senators moved to Minnesota in 1961.

Kennedy (1-0), signed by the Royals to a five-year $70 million contract in January, limited the Twins to five hits - including four singles, before being pulled after 109 pitches with two out in the seventh.

that sent closer Ken Giles to Houston, struggled through a 26-pitch first inning but retired Neil Walker on an inning-ending flyout with two on. New York didn't put two runners on in an inning after that.

Velasquez made seven starts and 12 relief appearances as a rookie last year. Helping the rebuilding Phillies avoid what would have been their first 0-5 start since 1934, he gave up three hits and three walks.

Hector Neris, Daniel Stumpf, David Hernandez and Jeanmar Gomez combined for hitless relief, sealing just the second win for the Phillies in their last 12 games at Citi Field. Gomez got three outs for his second career save, his first since July 2014 with Pittsburgh.

YANKEES 8, TIGERS 4

DETROIT (AP) - CC Sabathia pitched into the seventh inning in his return for New York, and Alex Rodriguez and Carlos Beltran homered in the cold to lift the Yankees past Detroit.

Sabathia (1-0) allowed three runs and four hits in six-plus innings in his first start since missing the postseason last year while undergoing alcohol rehabilitation. He retired the first nine batters he faced and had only one really messy stretch, in the fourth. Rodriguez gave the Yankees a 1-0 lead in the first with his 688th career homer, and Beltran hit a two-run shot in the fifth.

Mike Pelfrey (0-1) allowed six runs and eight hits in 3 2/3 innings in his first start for the Tigers after signing with Detroit in the offseason.

The temperature at game time was 31 degrees, the coldest in Comerica Park history, according to STATS.

DODGERS 3, GIANTS 2

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Madison Bumgarner hit another home run off Dodgers star Clayton Kershaw, but both aces were done by the time Charlie Culberson hit a go-ahead double in the 10th inning to lift Los Angelesover San Francisco.

Chris Hatcher (1-0) retired pinch-hitter Joe Panik on a called third strike to send the game into extras, then Kenley Jansen finished for his second save. The Dodgers were on the other side of a 3-2 result in 10 innings a night earlier.

Bumgarner struck out eight and Kershaw had five Ks in his eight innings for another impressive duel between the ace left-handers.

Bumgarner hit a solo homer off Kershaw in the second inning, his second in two seasons against his National League West rival.

George Kontos (0-1) gave up a one-out double to Corey Seager before Culberson's extra-base hit.

ASTROS 6, BREWERS 4

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Colby Rasmus hit two home runs and a sacrifice fly to lead theHouston Astros past the Milwaukee Brewers 6-4 Saturday night.

Rasmus teed off on Milwaukee starter Wily Peralta (0-2) with a solo shot in the third and a two-run blast in the fifth that landed near the top row of the second-tier bleachers in right.

Rasmus may have found some motivation after being called for interference under the new ''Chase Utley rule,'' resulting in a game-ending double play Friday night that halted Houston's ninth-inning rally and gave the Brewers a 6-4 win.

Tyler White kept up his torrid start for Houston with a sacrifice fly in the first and followed Rasmus in the fifth with his third home run. White is 10 for 15 (.667) so far in his rookie season.

Doug Fister (1-0) won his Astros' debut, allowing three runs on five hits in five innings.

RED SOX 8, BLUE JAYS 4.

TORONTO (AP) - Dustin Pedroia had three hits and two RBIs and Rick Porcello pitched six innings to win his season debut to lead Boston.

Jose Bautista hit a pair of two-run home runs, his first two of the season, but the Blue Jays lost their fourth straight.

Hanley Ramirez tripled home the tiebreaking run on a ball that bounced over Bautista's head in the fifth. Ramirez later scored on a passed ball.

The Red Sox have scored at least six runs and finished with at least 10 hits in all four games this season, the third time in team history they've done so.

Porcello (1-0) allowed four runs and seven hits in six innings. Kojie Uehara worked the seventh and Robbie Ross Jr. handled the final two innings.

R.A. Dickey (1-1) allowed seven runs, six earned, and eight hits in five innings.

REDS 5, PIRATES 1

CINCINNATI (AP) - Eugenio Suarez drove in three runs with a single and a homer, and ace-by-default Raisel Iglesias made another solid start as Cincinnati handed Pittsburgh its firt loss.

At 4-0, Pittsburgh was off to its best start since 2003. The Pirates also had their top starter making his debut - Gerrit Cole (0-1) was pushed back in the rotation after developing a sore ribcage during spring training. He still couldn't beat the Reds, falling to 0-5 in seven starts against them.

Suarez had an RBI single in the first and a two-run homer in the seventh - his team-leading third of the season. He also scored three times.

Iglesias (1-0) gave up a run and eight hits in 5 2/3 innings. He was moved to the front of the rotation when injuries sent four starters to the disabled list.

WHITE SOX 7, INDIANS 3

CHICAGO (AP) - Avisail Garcia hit a three-run home run in the decisive seventh inning, ace Chris Sale overcame two home runs to stay unbeaten and Chicago rallied past Cleveland.

Garcia, picked off first base a day earlier in a miserable home opener for the White Sox, went the opposite way off Bryan Shaw (0-1). Melky Cabrera's nine-pitch RBI single a batter earlier put the White Sox ahead.

Jose Abreu hit a solo home run and reached base four times, while Sale (2-0) allowed three runs and six hits with six strikeouts in seven innings in the White Sox's fourth win in six games.

Sale had retired 12 straight before an infield single and Mike Napoli's two-run homer to center in the sixth tied it. Yan Gomes' solo shot an inning later put the Indians ahead before Chicago's five-run seventh.

CUBS 4, DIAMONDBACKS 2

PHOENIX (AP) - Arizona ace Zack Greinke got off to a rough start and lost again, with Kris Bryant and Chicago beating the Diamondbacks.

Greinke (0-2) gave up three runs in the first inning on four consecutive hits and a sacrifice fly.

Greinke signed a $206.5 million, six-year deal with the Diamondbacks as a free agent after going 19-3 with a 1.66 ERA for the Dodgers last season. Hit hard by Colorado on opening day earlier this week, the right-hander now has a 9.90 ERA.

Bryant doubled twice and Ben Zobrist had three hits for the Cubs.

Kyle Hendricks (1-0) pitched four-hit ball into the seventh inning.

CARDINALS 12, BRAVES 2

ATLANTA (AP) - Pitcher Carlos Martinez drove in two runs, matching the total he allowed in six innings, and St. Louis beat Julio Teheran and winless Atlanta.

At 0-4, Atlanta is the only NL team without a victory this season.

Martinez (1-0) allowed two runs on four hits and three walks.

The Cardinals have scored a combined 19 runs while winning the first two games of the weekend series. They were held to only seven runs in three losses at Pittsburgh to open the season.

Kolten Wong had three hits, scored two runs and also reached on one of Atlanta's two errors. Aledmys Diaz had two hits, including an RBI off John Gant in the eighth.

Teheran (0-1) gave up four earned runs on six hits and four walks in four innings. He also threw two wild pitches.

ATHLETICS 6, MARINERS 1

SEATTLE (AP) - Rich Hill struck out 10 batters over six innings to give Oakland's overworked bullpen a break, Josh Reddick homered for the second straight game and the Athletics beat Seattle.

Oakland won the first two games of the weekend series between the AL West foes thanks largely to a stellar performance from Hill (1-1). He was shaky on opening day while filling in for ill Sonny Gray but rebounded by allowing just one run on five hits and a walk Saturday. His only mistake was a solo homer from Chris Iannetta in the second inning.

Reddick's two-run homer came with two outs in the fifth inning - he jumped on a changeup from Seattle starter Nathan Karns (0-1) for a 4-1 lead. Danny Valencia and Jed Lowrie also had RBI singles.

RANGERS 4, ANGELS 1

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Adrian Beltre homered and doubled twice, leading Cole Hamels and Texas to the win.

The Rangers, however, lost catcher Robinson Chirinos to a broken right forearm. He left in the middle of the game.

Hamels (2-0) pitched six crisp innings to win his ninth straight decision in the regular season. He allowed a run and four hits, struck out four and induced three double-play grounders in his Angel Stadium debut.

Shawn Tolleson pitched the ninth for his second save.

Garrett Richards (0-2) gave up two earned runs and eight hits in 6 2/3 innings.

PADRES 16, ROCKIES 3

DENVER (AP) - Matt Kemp homered twice and drove in six runs and San Diego ended Trevor Story's home run streak.

Story, who had gone deep six times for the Rockies since making his debut on opening day, was the first major leaguer to homer in each of his first four games. That run ended with a 1-for-5, three-strikeout performance - the shortstop also made his first error.

Kemp's solo shot to left in the third inning traveled 448 feet and his three-run shot in the fourth over the newly raised fences in the right field alley went 428 feet. Both came off lefty Jorge De La Rosa (0-1).

Cory Spangenberg and Wil Myers also homered for the Padres.

Drew Pomeranz (1-0) gave up two runs and four hits in five innings.

DENVER (AP) Trevor Story became the first major leaguer to homer in each of his first four games, connecting two more times for the Colorado Rockies in a 13-6 loss to the San Diego Padres on Friday.

Story now has six home runs since making his debut on opening day. He got three hits and drove in four runs while playing for the first time at Coors Field.

Matt Kemp and Melvin Upton Jr. homered as the Padres broke loose after they were the first team in big league history to be shut out in its first three games. San Diego was outscored 25-0 while getting swept by the Dodgers.

BREWERS 6, ASTROS 4

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Colby Rasmus was called for interference on the ''Chase Utley rule,'' resulting in a game-ending double play and blunting Houston's ninth-inning rally in a loss to Milwaukee.

Down 6-0, the Astros scored four times in the ninth and put runners on first and second with one out.

Jose Altuve hit a bouncer to second baseman Scooter Gennett, who threw to shortstop Jonathan Villar for the forceout. Rasmus slid past the base, and Villar didn't make a relay to first.

Second base Dan Bellino called Rasmus for not trying to stay on the bag, part of the requirement under baseball's new rule governing slides on potential double plays. The call was upheld after the Astros challenged the play.

Houston lost its third in a row.

PIRATES 6, REDS 5

CINCINNATI (AP) - Starling Marte hit his first career grand slam, connecting off new Cincinnati closer J.J. Hoover to lift unbeaten Pittsburgh to victory.

The Pirates improved to 4-0 for the first time since 2003 by taking advantage of Cincinnati's unsettled back of the bullpen. The Reds lost for the first time.

Down 5-2, Pittsburgh loaded the bases in the eighth inning off Ross Ohlendorf, who hit a batter, walked another and gave up an infield hit with two outs. Hoover (0-1) came on for his first save opportunity since replacing closer Aroldis Chapman, who was traded to the Yankees in the offseason.

Marte hit Hoover's second pitch into the stands in left field, the Pirates' first homer of the season.

Ryan Vogelsong (1-0) gave up a pair of runs - one earned - in two innings. Mark Melancon pitched the ninth for his second save in as many chances.

METS 7, PHILLIES 2

NEW YORK (AP) - Jacob deGrom maintained his focus on the mound with a baby on the way, and New York got big hits from Neil Walker and Michael Conforto to beat Philadelphia in its home opener.

After the 2015 National League championship flag was raised above the right-field stands at Citi Field, deGrom (1-0) pitched six sharp innings in his season debut and even knocked in the first run with a groundout. The All-Star right-hander was removed as a precaution with tightness in his right lat, the Mets announced.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Salvador Perez had an RBI triple in the eighth inning and scored the go-ahead run on Omar Infante's sacrifice fly to help Kansas City come back and beat Minnesota.

Alex Gordon singled and scored on Perez's triple, his first since Sept. 25, 2014.

Byung Ho Park homered in the top of the eighth to give Minnesota a 3-2 lead, driving Joakim Soria's 1-1 pitch out to left-center for his first extra-base hit. Park led the Korean Baseball Organization with 53 homers last season before signing a three-year, $24 million contract with the Twins in December.

Soria (1-0) struck out three and allowed a run in one inning, and Kevin Jepsen (0-2) gave up two runs on two hits and a sacrifice fly. Wade Davis worked around a 10-pitch walk to Brian Dozier to get his second save.

ORIOLES 6, RAYS 1

BALTIMORE (AP) - Baltimore hit four solo home runs off Chris Archer and defeated Tampa Bay for its first 4-0 start since 2011.

Chris Davis homered and scored three runs for the Orioles, who were coming off a three-game sweep of Minnesota. The best start in franchise history is 5-0 in 1970.

Davis hit his second homer of the season in the second inning, and three of his teammates went deep in the fifth: Jonathan Schoop, Nolan Reimold and Manny Machado.

Archer (0-2) allowed six runs, 10 hits and a career high in homers over five innings. The Rays' opening day pitcher is winless in eight starts since Aug. 31 at Baltimore.

Chris Tillman (1-0) gave up one run and four hits in five innings. He retired the last nine batters he faced.

RED SOX 8, BLUE JAY S7

TORONTO (AP) - Brock Holt hit his first career grand slam and drove in a career-high five runs, David Ortiz had two RBIs and Boston rallied to spoil Toronto's home opener.

Josh Donaldson hit a grand slam, but the Blue Jays couldn't hold a 7-2 lead and blew a save for the third straight game.

Matt Barnes (1-0) pitched one perfect inning and Craig Kimbrel got his first save.

Boston has scored six or more runs in each of its first three games, the first time it has done so since 1995.

Drew Storen (0-1) allowed two runs in 1/3 of an inning.

TIGERS 4, YANKEES 0

DETROIT (AP) - Jordan Zimmermann was outstanding in his Detroit debut, Miguel Cabrera homered and the Tigers beat New York to win their eighth straight home opener.

Zimmermann (1-0) allowed two hits and three walks in seven innings in his first start since leaving Washington and signing a $110 million, five-year deal with the Tigers.

Detroit has won three in a row to start the season. Nick Castellanos hit four singles for the Tigers.

Cabrera hit an RBI single in the first and a solo homer in the seventh. Luis Severino (0-1) allowed three runs and 10 hits in five-plus innings.

The Yankees gave Alex Rodriguez the day off, and Carlos Beltran was not in the starting lineup.

INDIANS 7, WHITE SOX 1

CHICAGO (AP) - Danny Salazar pitched two-hit ball into the sixth inning, and Cleveland spoiled Chicago's bone-chilling home opener.

It was 39 degrees at first pitch and snow and rain fell during the day, but the Indians were in their element. Cleveland jumped to a 5-0 lead against John Danks en route to an easy victory after splitting two games at home with Boston in a season-opening series that included two postponements.

Jason Kipnis singled off Danks (0-1) and scored during a three-run first and capped a two-run second with a sacrifice fly.

Francisco Lindor added two hits and two runs. Mike Napoli scored twice, and Carlos Santana and Yan Gomes each drove in two.

Salazar (1-0), a 14-game winner last season, gave up a solo homer to Todd Frazier but not much else. He struck out seven and walked three over 5 1/3 innings.

DIAMONDBACKS 3, CUBS 2

PHOENIX (AP) - Yasmany Tomas singled home Chris Owings with two outs in the ninth inning and Arizona rallied to give Chicago its first loss of the season.

Welington Castillo singled off ex-Diamondbacks starter Trevor Cahill (0-1) and Owings, the pinch runner, took second on a groundout. Tomas singled to left and Owings raced home well ahead of the throw.

Jean Segura had three hits, including two doubles, to become the first Diamondbacks player to open a season with five multihit games. Paul Goldschmidt singled Segura home twice, the second time off Pedro Strop to tie it at 2 with two outs in the eighth.

Brad Ziegler (1-0) pitched a perfect ninth for the victory.

MLB Capsules (April 8, 2016)

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) Hunter Pence hit a grand slam in the eighth inning, Joe Panik drove in three runs to key San Francisco's comeback, and the Giants beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 12-6 in their home opener Thursday.

The Dodgers' 31-inning shutout streak ended in the fifth, one inning shy of the record to begin a season set by the 1963 St. Louis Cardinals.

Chris Heston (1-0) worked the sixth in relief of Jake Peavy for the victory as San Francisco erased a 4-0 deficit. Bruce Bochy bested his former outfielder and now-Dodgers manager Dave Roberts in their first matchup.

In the fifth, Los Angeles finally gave up its first runs of 2016 when the Giants got to Alex Wood (0-1).

Joc Pederson hit a two-run homer for the Dodgers.

YANKEES 8, ASTROS 5

NEW YORK (AP) - Mark Teixeira sliced a tiebreaking, three-run homer in the seventh inning and Starlin Castro connected again, sending New York past Houston.

The Yankees took two of three in the season-opening series against the team that beat them in the AL wild-card game last October.

Castro kept up his torrid start with a solo home run and a single off the wall, making him 7 for 12. The former Cubs infielder has eight RBIs, the most by any player in his first three games for the Yankees since the stat became official in 1920, STATS said.

Brian McCann also homered for the Yankees, and Jacoby Ellsbury doubled twice. Alex Rodriguez made it 5-all with his first hit of the season, an RBI single in the fifth.

Tyler White hit his first homer in the majors, drove in four runs and got three hits for the Astros. He's 6 for 9 since making his big league debut this week.

White and Preston Tucker lined consecutive home runs off Nathan Eovaldi in the second.

Chasen Shreve (1-0) was the winner and Andrew Miller earned his first save. Will Harris (0-1) took the loss.

MARLINS 6, NATIONALS 4

WASHINGTON (AP) - Miami reliever David Phelps entered after a rain delay and shut out Washington for four innings while delivering his first career RBI at the plate, and the Marlins spoiled the Nationals' sloppy home opener in front of a dwindling crowd.

While Phelps (1-0) replaced Adam Conley following a 1-hour, 25-minute break because of a thunderstorm in the second with the score 3-all, Nationals starter Tanner Roark (0-1) surprisingly remained in the game. Roark allowed four runs - three earned, all in the first - and nine hits in four innings.

Bryce Harper was presented with his 2015 NL MVP and Silver Slugger trophies during pregame festivities and hit his second homer of 2016 in the seventh, a solo shot off Bryan Morris.

Harper flied out to deep center to open the ninth against A.J. Ramos, who worked around a walk for his first save, striking out Daniel Murphy looking to end it.

REDS 10, PHILLIES 6

CINCINNATI (AP) - Jay Bruce homered twice and matched a career high with five RBIs, and Cincinnati made a winner of top pitching prospect Robert Stephenson in his major league debut by beating Philadelphia to complete a season-opening sweep.

Eugenio Suarez hit his first career grand slam and Bruce connected for a three-run shot as the Reds scored eight times in the fourth inning, ruining the big league debut of reliever Daniel Stumpf. Bruce capped the 13-batter outburst with an RBI single.

Stephenson (1-0), a first-round draft pick in 2011, allowed six hits and four runs - three earned - in five innings. He was optioned back to Triple-A Louisville after the game.

Cedric Hunter, Ryan Howard and Carlos Ruiz homered for the Phillies.

The Reds are 3-0 for the second consecutive season. The loss was Philadelphia's eighth straight in Cincinnati.

The Phillies are 0-3 for the first time since 2007. They have dropped seven in a row overall to the Reds.

Charlie Morton (0-1) allowed six runs over 3 2/3 innings in his Phillies debut.

WHITE SOX 6, ATHLETICS 1

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Mat Latos gave up one hit over six shutout innings for his first win since last July, Jose Abreu hit a two-run homer and Chicago beat Oakland to give manager Robin Ventura his 300th career win.

Latos (1-0) was stellar in his White Soxdebut. He retired 13 of the first 14 batters and didn't allow a baserunner until Chris Coghlan's one-out single in the fifth - one pitch after left fielder J.B. Shuck dropped Coghlan's foul ball.

Abreu homered off Kendall Graveman (0-1) and added a sacrifice fly during Chicago's four-run ninth.

ORIOLES 4, TWINS 2

BALTIMORE (AP) - Ubaldo Jimenez pitched seven sharp innings and Baltimore rallied to beat Minnesota for a three-game sweep.

Manny Machado and rookie Joey Rickard homered for the Orioles, who trailed 2-0 in the sixth before coming back against Phil Hughes (0-1).

Jimenez (1-0) gave up a first-inning homer to Joe Mauer and an unearned run in the second before bouncing back to hold the Twins at bay. The right-hander allowed eight hits, struck out nine and walked none.

Jimenez retired 12 of the final 14 batters he faced, striking out seven.

Orioles rookie Dylan Bundy worked the eighth and Darren O'Day got his first save.

CUBS 14, DIAMONDBACKS 6

PHOENIX (AP) - Anthony Rizzo matched his career high with six RBIs and the Chicago Cubs beat the Arizona Diamondbacks, but lost Kyle Schwarber with a sprained ankle in an outfield collision.

Schwarber was hurt in the second inning when he collided with Dexter Fowler, a play that resulted in an inside-the-park home run for Arizona's Jean Segura. Segura also started the game with a homer. He is the eighth player in major league history to lead off with a home run and hit an inside-the-park homer in the same game.

John Lackey (1-0) gave up six runs on eight hits over six innings in his Cubs debut, but got the win thanks to a five-run Chicago fourth inning.

The Diamondbacks were up 3-0, 4-2 and 6-4, but starter Rubby De La Rosa (0-1) couldn't hold the leads.

ANGELS 4, RANGERS 3

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Albert Pujols hit a bases-loaded single with two outs in the ninth inning to give the Los Angeles Angelstheir first victory of the season.

Yunel Escobar drove in the Angels' first two runs with a homer and RBI single in the opener of a four-game series.

Sam Dyson (0-1), who escaped a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the Angels' eighth, gave up a one-out single by Johnny Giavotella in the ninth and a walk to Escobar. Both advanced on a grounder to third by pinch-hitter Carlos Perez, and Pujols greeted Shawn Tolleson with a line drive to left-center on a 1-0 pitch after Andrew Faulkner's intentional walk to Mike Trout.

Huston Street (1-0) pitched a perfect inning to get the win.

Toronto Blue Jays third baseman Josh Donaldson left Wednesday's game against the Tampa Bay Rays to find out that he had a calf strain in his leg.
  
Darwin Barney switched from second to third base to replace Donaldsonin the bottom half of the seventh inning (when the injury occured), while Ryan Goins replaced Barney at second.

Donaldson hit his seond home run of the season in the game.
