Baseball Capsules (September 4, 2017)

DETROIT (AP) — Jose Ramirez tied a major league record with five extra-base hits, including a pair of home runs that deflected off Detroit outfielders, and the Cleveland Indians routed the Tigers 11-1 Sunday for their 11th straight victory.

Ramirez had three doubles in becoming the 13th player with five extra-base hits in a game. Kris Bryant of the Cubs did it last year, and the previous Cleveland player to accomplish the feat was Kelly Shoppach in 2008.

The AL Central-leading Indians have their longest winning streak since a team-record 14-game run last year. They outscored the Tigers 29-5 while posting their first four-game sweep in Detroit.

Cleveland right-hander Josh Tomlin (8-9) returned from the disabled list and allowed one run in 5 2/3 innings.

Detroit left-hander Chad Bell (0-2) was charged with five runs in four-plus innings in his first major league start.

ASTROS 8, METS 6

HOUSTON (AP) — Cameron Maybin hit a three-run homer, George Springer connected for the second straight day and the Astros swept their weekend series with the Mets.

Josh Reddick added two hits and three RBIs for the Astros, who won both games of a doubleheader on Saturday in their first home games since flooding from Hurricane Harvey devastated the city. Carlos Correa hit an RBI single in his return from the disabled list.

Will Harris (3-2) pitches a scoreless sixth for the win and Chris Devenski allowed one hit in two scoreless innings for his fourth save.

Mets starter Chris Flexen (3-4) allowed a career-high nine hits and matched a career high from his last start with seven runs in just four innings.

DIAMONDBACKS 5, ROCKIES 1

DENVER (AP) — Ketel Marte and Brandon Drury homered in Arizona's three-run sixth, and the Diamondbacks extended their winning streak to 10 games.

It's the Diamondbacks' longest winning streak since they captured a franchise-best 12 straight in 2003. Zack Godley (7-7) pitched six effective innings to help Arizona sweep a three-game series from Colorado.

The Diamondbacks increased their lead over Colorado for the top NL wild card to 6 1/2 games. The slumping Rockies saw their lead over Milwaukee for the second wild card trimmed to just a half-game.

With the game tied at 1 in the sixth, Marte lined a slider from German Marquez (10-6) over the fence in left for his first homer since July 29.

YANKEES 9, RED SOX 2

NEW YORK (AP) — Matt Holliday and Todd Frazier hit back-to-back home runs as New York wore out Chris Sale early and routed Boston, taking three of four games in their final series of the season to make up ground on the AL East leaders.

Chase Headley also went deep against Sale, and slumping Aaron Judge capped a six-run sixth with a two-run homer that snapped his longest drought of the season. Starlin Castro laced a three-run double and Luis Severino (12-6) was overpowering for New York, striking out nine in six innings of two-hit ball to win a marquee matchup on the mound.

The second-place Yankees won the season series 11-8 and sliced Boston's cushion in the division to 3 1/2 games.

Sale (15-7) was chased in the fifth and dropped to 0-3 in five starts vs. New York this year — though he entered with a 2.12 ERA and 44 strikeouts in 29 2/3 innings against them.

BRAVES 5, CUBS 1

CHICAGO (AP) — Max Fried combined with four relievers on a five-hitter in his first major league start, and the Braves ended the Cubs' six-game winning streak.

Recalled from Triple-A on Friday, Fried (1-0) gave up a run and four hits in five innings.

The NL Central-leading Cubs had matched their longest winning string of the season. Rookie Ian Happ hit his 21st homer, but Chicago couldn't get much going coming off a 14-12 victory.

The Cubs also lost Javier Baez after he got shaken up diving into second base in the second inning. Chicago's electrifying star trotted out to shortstop in the third but exited the game with one out.

Chicago left-hander Mike Montgomery (5-7) gave up three runs and five hits in five innings.

BREWERS 7, NATIONALS 2

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Domingo Santana homered twice, and Milwaukee pulled within a half-game of Colorado for the NL's second wild card.

Brent Suter, who had not pitched for Milwaukee since Aug. 12 because of left rotator cuff inflammation, allowed two hits in three scoreless innings and left after 43 pitches.

Jeremy Jeffress (2-0), Jacob Barnes and Anthony Swarzak combined for five hitless innings. Junior Guerra completed the three-hitter but gave up a two-run homer to Ryan Zimmerman in the ninth.

Edwin Jackson (5-4) gave up five runs — four earned — and five hits in 5 2/3 innings, dropping to 6-9 against the Brewers. The only team in the NL East above .500, Washington (82-54) maintained a 15-game lead over the second-place Marlins.

RANGERS 7, ANGELS 6

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Elvis Andrus hit two of Texas' four homers and the Rangers took the rubber game of a series with wild-card implications for both teams.

The Rangers (68-68) went ahead to stay when Robinson Chirinos and Delino DeShields hit back-to-back homers in the fourth inning. No. 9 hitter Chirinos' two-run homer tied it at 4 before DeShields went deep.

With four weeks left in the regular season, Texas is within three games of Minnesota for the AL's second wild card. The Angels (70-67) are 1 1/2 games back of that playoff spot.

Martin Perez (11-10) threw a career-high 117 pitches over six innings to win his sixth straight start. Tony Barnette earned his second save.

Andrew Heaney (1-1) was charged with five runs in 3 1/3 innings.

ORIOLES 5, BLUE JAYS 4, 12 INNINGS

BALTIMORE (AP) — Welington Castillo homered twice for Baltimore, including a game-tying shot in the ninth inning, and Mark Trumbo won it in the 12th with an RBI single.

The Orioles never led until Trumbo drove in Jonathan Schoop with a liner into the left-field corner off Danny Barnes (2-6). Prior to Trumbo's hit, Baltimore was 0 for 16 with runners in scoring position.

Toronto led 4-3 in the ninth before Castillo connected off Roberto Osuna, who was vying for his 36th save. Osuna avoided further damage by retiring Adam Jones with two one and two out.

Jimmy Yacabonis (2-0) pitched the 12th for the Orioles, who improved to 6-62 when trailing after eight innings.

Josh Donaldson homered for the last-place Blue Jays, who had to settle for a split of the four-game series.

PADRES 6, DODGERS 4

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Erick Aybar hit a two-run homer and Jose Pirela also went deep to help the Padres hand the major league-leading Dodgers their eighth loss in nine games.

San Diego won three straight against Los Angeles for the first time since June 2013.

Cody Bellinger hit his 36th homer to break Mike Piazza's Dodgers rookie record, set in 1993. It came with one out in the ninth off All-Star closer Brad Hand, who got his 15th save.

Dodgers left-hander Alex Wood (14-2) allowed four runs and seven hits in six innings in his first start since Aug. 21.

San Diego's Jhoulys Chacin (12-10) gave up three runs, two earned, and five hits in seven innings.

PHILLIES 3, MARLINS 1, 12 INNINGS

MIAMI (AP) — Nick Williams hit a two-run single with two out in the 12th inning, and five Phillies pitchers held the Marlins to four hits.

Miami's Giancarlo Stanton went 0 for 3 with two walks to finish the week 2 for 25 (.080). Both hits were homers, giving him 52 for the season.

Phillies rookie slugger Rhys Hoskins was held out of the starting lineup after being hit on the right wrist by a pitch Saturday.

The Marlins fell to 1-6 on their homestand, pushing them to the fringe of the NL wild-card race. Junichi Tazawa (3-4) got the loss.

Adam Morgan (3-1) allowed a walk and no hits in three scoreless innings. Hector Neris worked around a walk and a single to pitch a scoreless 12th for his 19th save.

WHITE SOX 6, RAYS 2

CHICAGO (AP) — White sox rookie Lucas Giolito struck out 10 in seven sharp innings, and Jose Abreu homered in his return to the lineup.

A key piece of Chicago's rebuilding project, the 23-year-old Giolito (2-1) allowed a run and three hits in his third start since being called up from the minor leagues last month.

Tim Anderson added three hits, including his 15th homer, and drove in three runs as the lowly White Sox hurt the Rays' wild-card chances by taking two of three in the weekend series.

Abreu, who missed the previous three games with a right elbow injury, hit a two-run shot in the third inning that made it 3-0 White Sox.

Matt Andriese (5-2) took the loss in his first start since June 10, allowing five runs in five innings.

ROYALS 5, TWINS 4

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Kansas City's Lorenzo Cain hit a go-ahead, two-run triple in the seventh inning after a checked-swing call went his way on a close two-strike pitch.

The Royals trailed 4-3 and had two on with two outs when Cain fouled off his first four pitches from Alan Busenitz (1-1). Cain took a fastball up, and then checked his swing on an outside curveball in the dirt.

First base umpire Mike Muchlinski ruled no swing and plate umpire Marty Foster ejected Minnesota manager Paul Molitor, who was still in the dugout. Molitor then came out to argue.

Cain fouled off another pitch, and then drove a fastball over Byron Buxton and off the center-field wall.

Scott Alexander (4-3) pitched a scoreless inning for the win.

CARDINALS 7, GIANTS 3

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Harrison Bader hit a tiebreaking homer in the decisive sixth inning after Madison Bumgarner homered in the bottom of the fifth, and the Cardinals gained ground in the wild-card race.

Paul DeJong hit a solo homer in the fourth for the first St. Louis hit and Jose Martinez followed with a drive to nearly the same spot over the left-field fence.

Luke Weaver (4-1) struck out nine over seven innings to just miss a third straight start with double-digit Ks, helping St. Louis move within three games of Colorado for the NL's second wild card.

Bumgarner (3-7), who was scratched Thursday night with the flu, allowed five runs in six innings.

PIRATES 3, REDS 1

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Trevor Williams pitched seven scoreless innings and Jordy Mercer hit his career-best 13th homer, leading Pittsburgh to the win.

Williams (6-7) scattered eight hits, struck out five and walked one in his first win since Aug. 7. The right-hander has allowed just two earned runs over 20 innings in his last three outings.

Felipe Rivero worked a rocky ninth for his 17th save. Scooter Gennett scored on second baseman Max Moroff's error, but Jose Peraza bounced into a game-ending forceout at home.

Cincinnati went 1 for 10 with runners in scoring position and left 10 runners on base. Reds right-hander Sal Romano (4-6) allowed two runs, one earned, and four hits in 5 2/3 innings.

MARINERS 10, ATHLETICS 2

SEATTLE (AP) — Robinson Cano homered and drove in four runs, Andrew Albers took a no-hitter into the sixth inning, and the Mariners completed a three-game series sweep.

Albers, acquired from Atlanta on Aug. 11, did not allow a hit until Matt Olson opened the sixth with his 12th homer. That was the only hit off Albers (3-1) who struck out five in six innings.

Carlos Ruiz and Mitch Haniger homered for the Mariners, who moved within 2 1/2 games of Minnesota for the second wild card.

Oakland's Daniel Gossett (3-8) gave up three runs and seven hits in 3 2/3 innings.

Astros acquire Verlander to bolster rotation

The Tigers dealt a franchise icon while the first-place Astros boosted their postseason prospects when veteran ace Justin Verlander was traded from Detroit to Houston on Thursday night.

The Astros sent right-handed pitcher Franklin Perez, outfielder Daz Cameron and catcher Jake Rogers to Detroit for Verlander, a 34-year-old right-hander.

The teams reportedly completed the deal seconds before the 11:59 ET trade deadline, meaning Verlander will be eligible for postseason play.

Verlander, who is making $28 million this season and in 2018-19 with a $22 million vesting option for 2020, has a 183-114 record with a 3.49 ERA and 2,373 strikeouts in 13 major league seasons, all with Detroit.

A six-time All-Star, Verlander was selected the AL Most Valuable Player and unanimously voted the AL Cy Young Award winner in 2011. He was also named the AL Rookie of the Year in 2006.

"We get him for two more years on his contract," Astros owner Jim Crane told Fox 26. "We got a really good team intact for the next few years. We think it's a big boost for the team and the city. We're excited about it. We're always trying to improve the team. It's like a Carlos Beltran. (Verlander) can add a dimension we don't have. We're trying to win. If we get a shot to win, we're going to lean in."

This season, Verlander is 10-8 with a 3.82 ERA and 176 strikeouts.

"On behalf of the Detroit Tigers, we sincerely thank Justin Verlander for his remarkable 13 seasons of dedication to the organization," Tigers general manager Al Avila said. "Justin has been the face of consistency over the course of his career, and a pillar for baseball in the City of Detroit. He is someone who I believe to be a first-ballot Hall of Famer. We wish Justin all the best as he starts a new chapter in his illustrious career. ...

"We're thrilled to get three great prospects from one of the highest ranked farm systems in baseball. All three players are outstanding athletes, and they greatly bolster our minor league system."

Perez, 19, is ranked as the 32nd-best prospect in baseball and the second-best prospect in the Astros organization according to Baseball America and the 46th-best prospect in baseball and the third-best prospect in the Houston system by MLB Pipeline.

"Perez was the headliner for us, cementing himself as a dominant force in each of his three years in professional baseball," Avila said.

Cameron, 20, is rated as the ninth-best prospect in the Astros organization by MLB Pipeline. The center fielder has spent the entire 2017 season with Class A Quad Cities and is hitting .271 with 79 runs, 29 doubles, eight triples, 14 home runs, 73 RBIs and 32 stolen bases.

He is the son of former major-league Mike Cameron.

"Daz Cameron is someone that we view as one of the highest-ceiling players in the minors," Avila said. "Cameron is a guy that slipped in the draft because of signability concerns, but has always shown flashes of his dad's play."

Rogers, 22, is ranked as the 11th-best prospect in the Astros system by MLB Pipeline. In his first full season in professional baseball, Rogers has played in 110 games in Class A ball, hitting .263 with 60 runs, 25 doubles, four triples, 18 home runs and 70 RBIs.

"Rogers plays beyond his years, demonstrating solid pop in his bat while having above average plate discipline, and our scouts have him rated as a reliable receiver behind the plate with an above average arm," Avila said.

MLB roundup: Diamondbacks sweep Dodgers

PHOENIX – Chris Iannetta and A.J. Pollock homered, and Zack Greinke recorded his National League-leading 16th victory as the Arizona Diamondbacks completed a three-game sweep with an 8-1 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday.

In the wake of an 8-for-10 performance during a doubleheader Wednesday in Philadelphia, the Braves' Ender Inciarte was a more modest 1-for-4 with a double Thursday. Nick Markakis and Ozzie Albies each had two hits for Atlanta.

BREWERS 6, NATIONALS 3

MILWAUKEE – Jonathan Villar homered for the second consecutive game and Zach Davies went seven innings for the second straight outing as Milwaukee topped Washington.

Davies (16-7) held the Nationals to two runs on six hits and two walks while striking out four. He has a 1.77 ERA over his last nine starts. Villar had two hits, his third straight with at least that many.

Trea Turner finished a home run shy of the cycle for Washington. Gio Gonzalez (13-6) had been dominant over the last month, going 5-0 with a 0.79 ERA in his previous five starts, but he gave up five runs on eight hits and struck out seven in six innings.

ASTROS 5, RANGERS 1

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Derek Fisher delivered a two-run single to cap a three-run eighth inning as Houston salvaged the finale of the three-game series with Texas that was moved to Florida because of Hurricane Harvey.

The Astros' Chris Devenski (7-3), who pitched 2 1/3 innings of hitless, scoreless relief, earned the victory after starter Collin McHugh couldn't finish the fifth. Ken Giles pitched two scoreless, hitless innings to earn his 27th save.

The Rangers' Adrian Beltre left the game with a strained left hamstring in the seventh inning. Beltre, who got his 3,000th career hit last month, will undergo an MRI exam on Friday to determine the severity of the injury.

TWINS 5, WHITE SOX 4

MINNEAPOLIS – Max Kepler was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded as Minnesota completed a two-run, ninth-inning comeback to defeat Chicago.

The White Sox's Alen Hanson hit a solo homer off Twins closer Matt Belisle in the top of the ninth to break a tie. Chicago closer Juan Minaya (2-2) allowed two runs on two hits and two walks as the White Sox lost for the fourth time in five games.

Belisle (1-2) surrendered the homer and a walk while striking out three batters in a non-save situation. Minnesota won its fourth straight game and maintained its spot as the second wild-card team in the American League.

CARDINALS 5, GIANTS 2

SAN FRANCISCO – Randal Grichuk gave St. Louis the lead for good with a second-inning home run, and Tommy Pham drove in a pair of late insurance runs to help St. Louis defeat San Francisco.

The Cardinals' Michael Wacha (10-7) limited the struggling Giants to one run in six innings. It was an all-around bad night for San Francisco, which had to scratch scheduled starter Madison Bumgarner because of an illness.

Grichuk's homer, his 18th of the season, came off Bumgarner's replacement, Matt Cain (3-11), with two outs in the second.

PHILLIES 3, MARLINS 2

MIAMI -- Ben Lively delivered a two-run single and pitched six strong innings as Philadelphia handed Miami its fourth straight loss.

The Marlins' Giancarlo Stanton, who leads the majors in home runs with 51, went 0-for-5. Stanton, who struck out twice and popped out twice, is 1-for-15 this week.

Thursday, August 31, 2017

Baseball Capsules (August 31, 2017)

NEW YORK (AP) — Trevor Bauer and Ryan Merritt shut down the Yankees' offense, leading the Cleveland Indians to a doubleheader sweep that damaged New York's chances to win the AL East.

Bauer (14-8) won his career-best seventh straight decision, Jose Ramirez tied his big league high with four hits and the Indians took advantage of Gary Sanchez's passed ball in a two-run first inning that stood up for a 2-1 win in Wednesday's opener.

Yandy Diaz hit a two-run single in a four-run first inning against rookie Jordan Montgomery (7-7) in the second game, and Edwin Encarnacion, Yan Gomes and Francisco Lindor added home runs in a 9-4 blowout that completed a three-game series sweep and extended the Indians' winning streak to seven games.

Defending AL champion Cleveland has won 16 of 20, opening a 7 1/2-game lead over second-place Minnesota in the AL Central and moving a season-high 20 games over .500 at 76-56.

Cody Allen struck out three of four batters for his 22nd save in 25 chances.

Jaime Garcia (1-2) gave up two runs, six hits and three walks in five-plus innings.

Merritt (2-0) began 16 of 22 batters with strikes, allowing one run and five hits in 5 1/3 innings.

ANGELS 10, ATHLETICS 8

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Mike Trout went 4 for 4 with a homer and scored four times in his return to the lineup, Albert Pujols connected twice and Cliff Pennington hit a go-ahead grand slam in the seventh inning to rally Los Angeles past Oakland.

Pujols drove in four runs and scored three. His two homers moved him into a tie with Jim Thome for seventh place on the career list at 612.

Trout had a triple and two singles for the Angels, who erased a five-run deficit and won their third straight. They remained a game behind Minnesota for the second AL wild card.

Trout snapped an 0-for-17 slump that marked the second-longest hitless skid of his career. He missed the previous two games as a precaution with a stiff neck after crashing into the outfield wall Sunday trying to make a catch.

Matt Olson and Bruce Maxwell homered as the Athletics put up a season-high eight runs in the fourth to build an 8-3 lead. But the Angels scored two in the fifth and five in the seventh, capped by Pennington's first career slam.

Chris Hatcher (0-2) walked Luis Valbuena to load the bases with two outs before Pennington launched his third home run of the season.

Cam Bedrosian (4-3) worked a scoreless inning and Blake Parker got four outs for his fourth save.

DIAMONDBACKS 6, DODGERS 4

PHOENIX (AP) — Paul Goldschmidt homered for the third straight game, Robbie Ray struck out 10 in 6 2/3 innings and Arizona handed Los Angeles its first four-game losing streak of the season.

Adam Rosales and Chris Herrmann also went deep for the Diamondbacks, who have won six straight and eight of nine to pull three games ahead of Colorado for the top NL wild card. They'll send Zack Greinke to the mound Thursday looking to become the first team to sweep a series from the Dodgers this year.

Ray allowed four hits and walked two. The left-hander topped 10 strikeouts for the seventh time this season. Fernando Rodney pitched a perfect ninth for his second save in two nights and 34th in 39 tries.

Hyun-Jin Ryu (5-7) lasted just four innings, giving up six runs and eight hits in his first loss since June 5. He had gone 2-0 in six starts since returning from the disabled list.

The Dodgers trailed 6-0 but got a solo homer from Curtis Granderson in the seventh and scored three in the eighth, two on Yasiel Puig's single.

Los Angeles had been the only team not to lose four straight this season. The Dodgers have dropped consecutive series for the first time since April.

ORIOLES 8, MARINERS 7

BALTIMORE (AP) — Welington Castillo went 4 for 4 with a homer and three RBIs, Jonathan Schoop singled in the go-ahead run in the eighth inning and Baltimore beat Seattle for its season-high seventh straight victory.

Schoop, Mancini and Craig Gentry also homered for the Orioles, who completed their first three-game sweep of Seattle since 2012. In this one, Baltimore fell behind 6-2 in the third inning before coming back.

Mitch Haniger homered and hit two doubles for Seattle, which completed an arduous 12-game East Coast trip with five straight defeats. After winning two of three in Tampa Bay and Atlanta, the Mariners went 1-2 at Yankee Stadium and came up empty against the sizzling Orioles.

After Baltimore went up 7-6 in the sixth on a bases loaded sacrifice fly by Manny Machado, Seattle pulled even in the eighth when Haniger connected off Brad Brach (4-4).

In the bottom half, Castillo singled off Christian Bergman (4-5) and went to second base on a sacrifice bunt before being replaced by pinch-runner Caleb Joseph. Tim Beckham then hit a liner to short, and Joseph was called out on a relay to second. But a replay overturned the call, and Schoop followed an intentional walk to Machado with a single to center off Marc Rzepczynski.

Zach Britton pitched the ninth for his 13th save.

RANGERS 8, ASTROS 1

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Andrew Cashner pitched eight strong innings, Mike Napoli hit a three-run homer and Texas beat Houston in a game relocated to Florida because of Hurricane Harvey.

A crowd of 6,123 — up from 3,485 the previous night for the opener of a three-game series at Tropicana Field — watched Cashner (8-9) limit the AL West leaders to three hits, one after the second inning.

Napoli's homer off Dallas Keuchel (11-3) capped a six-run fourth inning for the Rangers, who've won two straight following a three-game skid.

Houston's third loss in four games was overshadowed by the announcement earlier Wednesday that the Astros will return to home after Thursday's finale to face the New York Mets this weekend.

After an unscheduled day off, the Astros will play a doubleheader Saturday and afternoon game Sunday against the Mets.

NATIONALS 4, MARLINS 0

WASHINGTON (AP) — Stephen Strasburg tossed a complete game six-hitter and also homered, Wilmer Difo added a home run and Washington beat Miami to complete a three-game sweep.

Washington, which has won four in a row, extended its lead in the NL East to 15 games over the Marlins. Miami, which had won 13 of 16 prior to arriving in Washington, had not dropped three in a row since July 14-16.

The Marlins had no answer for Strasburg (11-4), who struck out eight. Strasburg threw 110 pitches. It was Strasburg's second complete game in 179 starts and his first since Aug. 11, 2013, against Philadelphia.

Strasburg is 1-1 with a 0.86 ERA in three starts since returning from a disabled list stint for right elbow nerve impingement.

Miami left-hander Adam Conley (6-6) made it through the first four innings unscathed before Strasburg launched the first pitch of the fifth to right-center for his second home run this season and third of his career.

RED SOX 7, BLUE JAYS 1

TORONTO (AP) — Mitch Moreland had a pinch-hit homer and drove in four runs, Hanley Ramirez added a solo shot and Boston beat Toronto to complete a three-game sweep.

Rick Porcello (9-15) allowed one run in 6 2/3 innings as the AL East-leading Red Sox moved 5 1/2 games ahead of the second-place New York Yankees, who were swept in a doubleheader by Cleveland. New York and Boston begin a four-game series at Yankee Stadium on Thursday.

Ramirez connected for the second straight game as the Red Sox improved to 8-1 in Toronto this season. Boston is 10-3 overall against the Blue Jays with six meetings remaining at Fenway Park in September.

Pinch-hitting for Chris Young against right-hander Tom Koehler (1-7), Moreland hit a second deck drive in the seventh, his 18th. It was the third pinch-hit homer of Moreland's career.

BREWERS 6, CARDINALS 5

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Domingo Santana and Jonathan Villar homered in the sixth inning, and center fielder Keon Broxton made a leaping catch over the wall for the final out.

Corey Knebel pitched the ninth for his 30th save. Chase Anderson (8-3) gave up two hits — both homers — in six innings, three earned runs, struck out six and walked two to improve to 4-0 in nine starts at Miller Park this season.

Santana hit his 22nd homer of the season and Villar's was his 10th, giving Milwaukee a franchise-record nine players with at least 10 homers in a season.

Carlos Martinez (10-10) allowed 10 hits, six runs — three earned — and struck out seven in 5 2/3 innings.

CUBS 17, PIRATES 3

CHICAGO (AP) — Kyle Schwarber hit two home runs, Ian Happ and Anthony Rizzo also went deep and Chicago pounded Pittsburgh.

Chicago tied a season high for runs set against Philadelphia on Saturday and banged out 20 hits to match its highest total since May 12, 2014, at St. Louis. The Cubs (72-60) outscored the Pirates 27-5 in a three-game sweep and moved 12 games above .500 for the first time this year. They also remained 3 1/2 games ahead of Milwaukee for the NL Central lead.

Javier Baez became the first Cubs player in seven years to steal home.

Jose Quintana (5-3) held Pittsburgh to three runs in six innings. He retired 14 in a row after giving up two runs in the first and also had an RBI single.

Ivan Nova (11-12) lasted just three innings in his shortest outing of the year.

TWINS 11, WHITE SOX 1

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Jose Berrios pitched seven scoreless innings, Brian Dozier had four hits and Eddie Rosario homered twice as Minnesota defeated Chicago.

Berrios (12-6) tied a career high with 11 strikeouts, including seven of the last nine batters he faced. He walked one and gave up just four hits to win his seventh straight start at Target Field.

The Twins, with a slim lead for the second AL wild card, ran their August record to 19-10 — the most wins in the majors this month.

Mitch Garver and Ehire Adrianza each had three hits for the Twins. Adrianza tripled twice and drove in four runs, while Garver scored three runs and was a home run short of the cycle.

Derek Holland (7-14) gave up five runs in five innings. In six career starts at Target Field, he's 0-5 with a 7.98 ERA.

METS 2, REDS 0

CINCINNATI (AP) — Rafael Montero took a one-hitter into the ninth inning, and New York held on for a victory that extended its dominance over Cincinnati.

Montero (3-9) allowed only Joey Votto's single through the first eight innings. The Reds loaded the bases with one out in the ninth on two hits and an intentional walk to Votto. A.J. Ramos fanned Adam Duvall and Scooter Gennett for his 26th save in 28 chances.

Jose Reyes, Wilmer Flores and Kevin Plawecki doubled in the first inning for a 2-0 lead against Homer Bailey (4-7), setting up the Mets' 12th victory in their last 15 games at Great American Ball Park.

The Mets had won 14 straight against the Reds overall since 2014, a streak snapped by Cincinnati's 14-4 win Tuesday night.

TIGERS 6, ROCKIES 2

DENVER (AP) — Justin Verlander struck out nine over six commanding innings and aided his own cause by driving in his first career run.

Verlander (10-8) allowed one run and three hits. His only mistake was a curveball that Charlie Blackmon hit for a solo homer in the sixth. Verlander ignited the offense with an RBI single in the second.

Nicholas Castellanos added a solo homer and James McCann sealed the game with a three-run shot in the fifth to help Tigers take two of three from Colorado.

The Rockies finished August with a 12-15 record — their first losing month of the season. They saw their lead for the second NL wild card shrink to three games over Milwaukee.

Chad Bettis (0-2) struggled with his control in his fourth start since returning from treatment for testicular cancer. He allowed five runs in five innings.

RAYS 5, ROYALS 3

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Logan Morrison, Steven Souza Jr. and Adeiny Hechavarria homered to help Tampa Bay beat Kansas City for its latest series victory.

The Rays took two of three from the slumping Royals and have won three consecutive series. The Royals lost 18 of 28 games in August, including six of seven to end the month.

Morrison, born in Kansas City, has four homers, eight RBIs and six runs in the first six games of Tampa Bay's road trip. He hit his 33rd homer in the fifth against Jason Vargas (14-9). Souza hit his 29th earlier in the inning, snapping a 3-all tie.

Vargas, an All-Star this season, is 2-6 with a 7.20 ERA over his past 10 starts.

Jake Odorizzi (7-7) allowed three runs and four hits over five-plus innings. Alex Colome earned his major league-leading 40th save in 45 chances.

After Pirela's homer, reliever Kyle Crick's wild pitch scored Wil Myers, putting the Padres up 3-0. Austin Hedges' RBI single made it 4-0.

Wood's pitch count reached 97 through 4 1/3 innings and he was pulled. Craig Stammen (2-2), the first of four San Diego relievers, worked 1 2/3 clean innings for the win. Brad Hand got four outs for his 14th save as the bullpen retired 14 of 16 batters.

Baseball Capsules (August 30, 2017)

WASHINGTON (AP) — Giancarlo Stanton tied a major league record with his 18th home run in August, but Anthony Rendon had four RBIs and the Washington Nationals beat the Miami Marlins 8-3 on Tuesday night.

Stanton hit a long homer in the first inning off Edwin Jackson (5-3), his 51st this season, to open the scoring following a 26-minute rain delay. His August output matched the mark set by Rudy York with the Detroit Tigers in 1937. Sammy Sosa set the record for homers in a month when he hit 20 in June 1998, and Stanton has two games left this month to catch the former Cubs slugger.

Stanton added an RBI with a deep sacrifice fly in the fifth inning.

Rendon's three-run double in the seventh came after Washington's bullpen thwarted a rally earlier in the inning. Daniel Murphy also had a two-run single.

The Nationals, 16-7 since Aug. 6, had five runs and nine hits in 4 1/3 innings against Vance Worley (2-4).

RED SOX 3, BLUE JAYS 0

TORONTO (AP) — Chris Sale and two relievers combined on a four-hitter, Hanley Ramirez hit a solo home run and Boston beat Toronto.

Sale (15-6) fanned 11 in his major league-best 17th double-digit strikeout game, raising his league-leading total to 264. His 15 wins lead the AL.

Sale, who matched a season-worst by allowing seven runs in his previous outing, pitched seven innings. The left-hander has not allowed a run in 22 innings against the Blue Jays this season.

Craig Kimbrel finished for his 31st save in 35 chances.

Promoted from Triple-A Buffalo to make his first start for the Blue Jays, left-hander Brett Anderson (2-3) allowed one run in 5 2/3 innings.

Bundy (13-8) allowed just a bunt single to Kyle Seager in the fourth inning and set a career high with 12 strikeouts. The right-hander has a 2.00 ERA in August and has struck out 10 or more in three of his last four starts.

Jonathan Schoop and Welington Castillo also went deep for the Orioles, who moved two games over .500 for the first time since June 10.

Schoop collected his 29th homer of the season and 500th career hit with a solo shot in the first off Erasmo Ramirez (5-5).

ROYALS 6, RAYS 2

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Whit Merrifield, Jorge Bonifacio and Eric Hosmer homered as Kansas City snapped a 45-inning scoreless streak on the way to a victory over Tampa Bay.

Merrifield's 16th home run with two outs in the third ended the Royals' drought, three innings shy of the major league record. The 1906 Philadelphia Athletics and 1968 Chicago Cubs share the mark with 48 scoreless innings.

Bonifacio homered with two outs in the sixth off Alex Cobb (9-9).

Cobb gave up a run on three singles and three wild pitches in the fourth. Hosmer scored on Mike Moustakas' single, but the Royals stranded runners at second and third.

Anthony Rizzo went 3 for 4 with an RBI, Alex Avila had an RBI single and Jason Heyward added a sacrifice fly for NL Central-leading Chicago.

Arrieta (14-8) struck out four and retired the last seven batters he faced, leaving after 97 pitches with a 3-0 lead. He hasn't allowed more than two earned runs in any of his nine starts since the All-Star break, going 6-1 with a 1.59 ERA during that span.

Wade Davis got the final three outs for his 27th save in 27 chances to establish a new Cubs record for consecutive saves opportunities converted.

Chad Kuhl (6-10) allowed three runs in 5 1/3 innings.

CARDINALS 10, BREWERS 2

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Matt Carpenter hit a two-run homer and Luke Voit drove in four runs, backing Luke Weaver's 10-strikeout night in a 10-2 win Tuesday over the Milwaukee Brewers.

Carpenter's shot to right in the fifth had added importance for the third baseman after he had pledged $10,000 for every home run that he hit the rest of the season to Hurricane Harvey relief efforts. The Galveston, Texas native looked up and pointed two fingers toward the night sky as he touched the plate to extend the Cardinals' lead to 9-1.

St. Louis chased Matt Garza (6-8) with one out in the fourth. The right-hander walked five and allowed six runs, though only three were earned after the Brewers committed two errors in the third.

The loss dropped the second-place Brewers to 3 1/2 games back of the NL Central-leading Cubs, who won on Tuesday.

RANGERS 12, ASTROS 2

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Shin-Soo Choo homered and drove in four runs, helping Texas rout Houston in the opener of a series relocated to Florida due to flooding caused by Hurricane Harvey.

Adrian Beltre of the Rangers drove in three runs to pass Hall of Famer Ernie Banks for 28th on the career RBI list with 1,637, and Joey Gallo hit a two-run homer off Mike Fiers (8-9) before an announced crowd of 3,485 at Tropicana Field, the home of the Tampa Bay Rays.

The three-game series that concludes Thursday was moved from Minute Maid Park because of flooding in the Houston area, with the Astros serving as the home team after the Rangers declined a proposal to play the games in Arlington, Texas.

It's only the fourth time in major league history that games have been relocated to neutral sites because of weather.

Martin Perez (10-10) pitched seven strong innings for the Rangers.

TWINS 6, WHITE SOX 4

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Jorge Polanco homered twice and Ervin Santana struck out seven while pitching into the seventh inning, leading Minnesota past Chicago.

Eduardo Escobar drove in two runs for the Twins, who started the day with a one-game lead over the Los Angeles Angels in the crowded race for the second AL wild card. Santana (14-7) matched his highest total for wins since he was a 17-game winner 2010 with the Angels.

Matt Belisle pitched the ninth for his fifth save. James Shields (2-5) has not won for the White Sox in 10 starts.

DIAMODNBACKS 7, DODGERS 6

PHOENIX (AP) — A.J. Pollock hit a two-run homer and Arizona roughed up Rich Hill in his follow-up to a near no-hitter.

Hill (9-6) pitched nine no-hit innings against Pittsburgh on Wednesday, losing the no-hitter and the game on Josh Harrison's walk-off homer in the 10th.

The Diamondbacks scored 11 runs to complete a three-game sweep of San Francisco on Sunday and kept hitting after a day off, knocking around Hill in a five-run first inning.

Paul Goldschmidt homered and Fernando Rodney allowed a run-scoring single by Chris Taylor in the ninth before closing out his 33rd save. The wild card-leading Diamondbacks have won five straight.

Taylor hit a two-run homer and Yasiel Puig a solo shot off Zack Godley (6-7) for the NL West-leading Dodgers, who have lost three in a row for the first time since early June.

ROCKIES 7, TIGERS 3

DENVER (AP) — Nolan Arenado capped a four-run seventh inning with his 30th homer, and Colorado beat Detroit.

Arenado's three-run shot broke open a close game and helped the Rockies win for the fourth time in six tries. Colorado increased its lead to four games over Milwaukee for the second NL wild card.

Colorado went ahead 4-3 on singles by Jonathan Lucroy and Trevor Story, and a sacrifice fly by pinch-hitter Carlos Gonzalez off starter Michael Fulmer (10-12).

Charlie Blackmon reached on a fielder's choice. Warwick Saupold walked DJ LeMahieu, and Arenado followed with his three-run drive to reach 30 homers for the third straight season. He leads the majors with 111 RBIs.

Rockies starter German Marquez tied a career high with 10 strikeouts before leaving with one out in the seventh. Pat Neshek (2-1) got the last two outs of the inning.

ANGELS 8, ATHLETICS 2

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — C.J. Cron hit two homers, including a three-run drive in the first inning, and Los Angeles beat Oakland.

CINCINNATI (AP) — Scott Schebler hit his first career grand slam, and Cincinnati ended its 14-game losing streak against New York.

The Reds hadn't beaten the Mets since Sept. 6, 2014. They'd dropped their last eight to New York at Great American Ball Park, where the Mets are 30-16 all-time — the best winning percentage by any NL team.

Cincinnati put it away with a seven-run eighth inning that featured Adam Duvall's three-run homer. Mets catcher Kevin Plawecki made his second appearance on the mound this season and induced a double-play grounder.

Reds rookie Sal Romano (4-5) made his third straight solid start, allowing three runs and six hits in six innings.

Schebler homered in the first off rookie Chris Flexen (3-3).

PADRES 6, GIANTS 3

Matt Moore (4-13) was charged with five runs and eight hits, with a walk and a hit batter. He struck out two.

Baseball Capsules (August 29, 2017)

KANSAS CITY, MO (AP) — The Kansas City Royals extended their scoreless streak to a franchise-record 43 innings, getting shut out for a fourth straight game in a 12-0 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday night.

The Royals haven't scored since the second inning of a 3-2 loss to Colorado last Thursday and were blanked three times over the weekend by Cleveland. The 1968 Chicago Cubs and 1906 Philadelphia Athletics hold the major league record at 48 scoreless innings, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

The 1992 Cubs were the last team to be blanked in four straight games, and it hasn't happened in the AL since the 1964 Washington Senators — nine years before the adoption of the designated hitter. No team has been shut out in five straight games since at least 1913, according to information gathered from baseball-reference.com.

Austin Pruitt (7-4) pitched six one-run innings for Tampa Bay, and Matt Andriese allowed one more hit while getting a three-inning save, his first this season.

Lucas Duda, Wilson Ramos and Logan Morrison went deep for Tampa Bay, with Duda getting his 25th and Morrison his 32nd of the season. Evan Longoria and Morrison hit back-to-back doubles after Duda's shot in the third off Ian Kennedy (4-10).

INDIANS 6, YANKEES 2

NEW YORK (AP) — Corey Kluber outpitched Luis Severino in a marquee matchup of All-Stars, and slumping Jose Ramirez homered twice to power Cleveland past New York for its fifth straight victory.

Carlos Santana hit a tiebreaking homer off Severino in the seventh inning and Austin Jackson also went deep for the AL Central leaders, who increased their cushion to seven games over idle Minnesota.

Coming off three consecutive shutouts in a sweep of Kansas City, the defending AL champions ran their scoreless streak to 30 innings before Chase Headley homered against Kluber (13-4) leading off the third. The 2014 AL Cy Young Award winner went eight innings and allowed only three hits, rebounding from a loss to Boston last week that ended a five-game winning streak and marked his first defeat since July 4.

Severino (11-6) gave up four hits — three homers — in 6 2/3 innings and lost for only the second time in 10 starts.

RED SOX 6, BLUE JAYS 5

TORONTO (AP) — Christian Vazquez had four hits, including a two-run home run, Eduardo Nunez added a solo shot and Boston beat Toronto, snapping a four-game skid.

Boston also overcame the latest stellar defensive play from center fielder Kevin Pillar, who dived to make a sensational catch on the warning track and take a hit away from Mookie Betts in the sixth. The crowd of 35,630 gave Pillar a standing ovation.

The AL East-leading Red Sox avoided their first five-game losing streak of the season.

Drew Pomeranz (14-4) got the win and Craig Kimbrel gave up two runs before locking down his 30th save. Danny Barnes (2-5) took the loss.

CUBS 6, PIRATES 1

CHICAGO (AP) — Mike Montgomery pitched six-hit ball into the eighth inning and helped himself at the plate, leading the Cubs to the win.

Montgomery (5-6) struck out four and walked none in his second start since he was inserted into the rotation after Jon Lester was placed on the 10-day disabled list. The left-hander was pulled after Jordy Mercer snapped his 17 1/3-inning scoreless streak with a leadoff homer in the eighth.

Carl Edwards Jr. got three outs before Wade Davis finished the six-hitter as Chicago moved 2 1/2 games ahead of idle Milwaukee for the top spot in the NL Central.

Trevor Williams (5-7) hung in there with Montgomery, pitching five innings of two-run ball, but Pittsburgh lost for the 11th time in its last 16 games. Mercer went 3 for 3, David Freese had two hits and Andrew McCutchen singled for the Pirates.

Scherzer (13-5) allowed one run and five hits, including Christian Yelich's home run, and had 10 strikeouts in his return from the 10-day disabled list.

Stanton, named NL Player of the Week for the second time this month on Monday, went 0 for 3 against Scherzer with two strikeouts and a groundball double play.

Jayson Werth had a two-run homer off Jose Urena (12-6) in his first game with the Nationals since suffering a left foot contusion on June 5.

GIANTS 3, PADRES 0

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Jeff Samardzija allowed just three singles in pitching his first shutout since 2015, and Brandon Crawford and Joe Panik homered to lead San Francisco over San Diego.

Samardzija (9-12) frustrated the Padres to beat them for the first time in four starts this year. He allowed infield singles to Wil Myers in the second and Yangervis Solarte in the fifth before Cory Spangenberg singled to right in the eighth. It was his fourth shutout and ninth complete game.

Crawford homered to right-center off Jhoulys Chacin (11-10) leading off the fourth, his 12th. Panik hit a two-run shot off the right-field foul pole off Phil Maton with one out in the eighth, his eighth. Crawford was aboard on a single.

TIGERS 4, ROCKIES 3

DENVER (AP) — Nicholas Castellanos had three hits, including a two-run triple, and Jordan Zimmermann rebounded from early trouble to help Detroit beat Colorado.

The Rockies stranded 11 baserunners as they began a nine-game homestand. Their lead for the second NL wild-card spot dwindled to three games over idle Milwaukee.

Zimmermann (8-11) went five innings and allowed three runs — all in the second inning. He settled down to move his career mark to 7-0 against the Rockies in 11 career starts.

Shane Greene struck out two of three in the ninth for his sixth save.

Antonio Senzatela (10-5) never found his command in allowing four runs over 3 2/3 innings.

ORIOLES 7, MARINERS 6

BALTIMORE (AP) — Adam Jones hit a milestone home run and Welington Castillo had three hits and two RBIs in the Orioles' fifth straight victory.

Chris Davis doubled in the tiebreaking run in the seventh inning for the resurgent Orioles, who climbed over .500 (66-65) for the first time since June 11. Baltimore jumped past Seattle (66-66) to within 1 ½ games of idle Minnesota for the final AL wild-card spot.

Jones' solo home run in the fifth inning gave him 25 for an Orioles-record seventh consecutive season. He shared the mark of six with Cal Ripken Jr.

With the score tied at 6, Trey Mancini led off the Baltimore seventh with a single off Emilio Pagan (1-3) and Davis followed with a liner into the right-field corner.

Donnie Hart (2-0) pitched the seventh for the win.

ANGELS 3, ATHLETICS 1

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Andrew Heaney struck out a career-high 10, Martin Maldonado had three hits and scored twice and Los Angeles beat Oakland.

Heaney (1-0), making his third start since Tommy John surgery, struck out the side in the first and the sixth innings. He had his best outing since the surgery, allowing two hits in six innings. He walked three and gave up one home run but worked his way out of trouble behind a strong curveball.

Blake Parker pitched a scoreless ninth for his third save.

Daniel Gossett (3-7) allowed three runs in 6 2/3 innings.

PHILLIES 6, BRAVES 1

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Rhys Hoskins ended his homer streak but did drive in the go-ahead run with a sixth-inning double, Aaron Nola pitched seven strong innings and Philadelphia beat Atlanta.

Cameron Rupp homered for the Phillies, who have connected in 10 straight games and totaled 21 homers over that stretch.

Rookie slugger Hoskins didn't go deep after homering in five straight games while becoming the fastest ever to reach 11 home runs, doing it in 18 games and 64 at-bats. His double just inside the left-field line scored Nick Williams to put the Phillies ahead 2-1.

That was enough for Nola (10-9), who rebounded from two straight subpar outings by allowing one run and five hits with six strikeouts and no walks.

Lucas Sims (2-4) allowed four runs in 6 1/3 innings.
