Pirates acquire pitcher Johnny Barbato from Yankees

The Pittsburgh Pirates today acquired right-handed pitcher Johnny Barbato from the New York Yankees in exchange for a player to be named or cash considerations. The announcement was made by Executive Vice President, General Manager Neal Huntington.

Barbato, who has been added to Pittsburgh's 40-man roster, has been optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis. The 24-year-old Barbato made one appearance/start for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre this season before being designated for assignment by New York on April 12.

Barbato was originally selected by San Diego in the sixth round of the 2010 First-Year Player Draft before being acquired by New York on December 29, 2014, in exchange for pitcher Shawn Kelley. He was a member of New York's Opening Day roster last season and went to make 13 relief appearances for the Yankees in 2016. Barbato also made 31 appearances (one start) for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre last season, posting a 3-2 record, three saves and a 2.61 ERA (48.1ip/14er).
