Sabathia's stellar pitching leads Yankees past Cardinals 3-2

BRONX, NY – Runs from Brett Gardner, Ronald Torreyes, and Aaron Hicks led the New York Yankees to a 3-2 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday.

The Yankees have a six-game winning streak, the longest current winning streak in the Majors. They did not win six straight games in 2016 until a six-game winning streak from their 39th-44th games (5/18-24/16). The Bombers have started 5-0 at home for the first time since 2000. Since 1990, they have started out at least 5-0 at home three other times (2000: 5-0; 1999: 5-0; 1998: 7-0). The Yanks are 30-13 at Yankee Stadium since 7/17/16.

The Yankees re 8-3 all-time against St. Louis, including 5-0 in the Bronx.

LHP CC Sabathia allowed just 1ER in 7.1IP (3H, 1BB, 6K, 1HR). He allowed a solo-HR to his final batter faced (Jedd Gyorko). The win marked his first start of at least 7.1IP with three-or-fewer hits allowed since 9/21/12 vs. Oakland (8.0IP, 3H, 0R). He has a 1.47 ERA through his first three starts, marking his lowest ERA through his first 3GS of a season since 2011 (1.45 ERA). The game marked Sabathia's 225th career win, surpassing Hall of Famers Jim Bunning (224) and Catfish Hunter (224) for sole possession of 66th place on baseball’s all-time wins list. He improved to 3-0 with a 2.25 ERA (28.0IP, 7ER) in four career starts against the Cardinals.

RHP Carlos Martínez (5.1IP, 4H, 3ER, 8BB, 11K, 1WP) started and took the loss. He set a career high with 8BB (previous: 5BB on 9/4/16 at Cincinnati). Martinez marked his most strikeouts in a game since he recorded a career-high 13K on 8/29/16 at Milwaukee.

"I wasn't really able to execute the pitches the way I wanted to," Martinez said through a translator.

The Cardinals dropped their second straight game to the Yankees, falling to 0-5 in the Bronx. St. Louis is one of two Major League teams with no regular season wins in the Bronx (also Chicago-NL, 0-5). St. Louis is 3-8 all-time vs. the Yankees.

2B Jedd Gyorko (1-for-3) hit his second home run of the season on a solo shot in the eighth inning.

RF Stephen Piscotty (1-for-3) hit a solo home run in the ninth inning. He is hitting .316 (6-for-9) with 2R, 1 double, 2HR and 8RBI in five games on the road trip (since 4/10).

Cardinals: RHP Adam Wainwright (0-2, 7.00 ERA) pitches vs. the Yankees for the first time in the Sunday night game. He has 134 career wins, tied with Dizzy Dean for sixth on the all-time Cardinals list.

Yankees: RHP Michael Pineda (1-1, 3.97) took a perfect game into the seventh inning in his last start vs. Tampa Bay. He has never faced the Cardinals.

NOTES . . . Today all players and uniformed field staff wore No. 42 to commemorate Jackie Robinson Day and the 70th anniversary of his Major League debut (April 15, 1947). . . . Each of the first 12 Yankees batters through the first two innings either walked or struck out (6BB, 6K) . . . according to the Elias Sports Bureau, the Yankees are the first team in the expansion era (since 1961) with a strikeout, walk or hit by pitch in each of their first 12 plate appearances of a game. Elias also notes that the last time a team had a streak as long at any point in a game was Tampa Bay on 9/2516 vs. Boston (18 straight batters with a K, BB, or HP). . . . St. Louis pitchers recorded a season-high 17K. It marked their most strikeouts in a game since 8/29/16 at Milwaukee (19K). It also marked their most strikeouts in a nine-inning loss since St. Louis recorded 17K in a 4-3 loss on 5/21/70 at Philadelphia (8.2IP). . . . St. Louis fielders recorded only one assist. . . . DH Matt Holliday was scratched from the starting lineup against his former team because of lower back stiffness.
