(TSX / STATS) -- The Boston Red Sox designated third baseman Pablo Sandoval for assignment on Friday.
Sandoval, 30, was returned from his injury rehab assignment with Triple-A Pawtucket and activated from the 10-day disabled list before being designated for assignment. He was placed on the 10-day disabled list on June 20 with a left inner ear infection.
President of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski made the announcement prior to Friday night's home game against the New York Yankees.
Sandoval is still owed $18.6 million in each of the next two seasons, a $5 million buyout and the rest of his $17 million for 2017.
Sandoval is hitting just .212 (21-for-99) with four home runs and 12 RBIs in 32 games this season.
Signed by Boston as a free agent in November 2014, the Venezuelan native appeared in 161 games with the Red Sox (2015-17), batting .237 with 14 homers and 59 RBIs.
Sandoval spent his first seven major league seasons with San Francisco (2008-14), winning World Series titles with the Giants in 2010, 2012 and 2014.
A two-time All-Star, Sandoval has hit .285 with 120 home runs and 521 RBIs in 1,030 career major league games.
