(TSX / STATS) -- BOSTON -- Trevor Bauer and Rick Porcello will have to settle their score another day after scheduled series finale between the Cleveland Indians and Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park was postponed Wednesday because of inclement weather.
Bauer and Porcello were set to go head-to-head for the first time since October, when they faced off in Game 1 of the American League Division Series, which the Indians won 5-4.
However, prolonged rain, thunder and lightning prompted the postponement after a delay of two-plus hours before a pitch was thrown. The game will be made up Aug. 14.
Boston (59-49) won the first two games of the series, 6-2 on Monday and a 12-10 thriller on Christian Vazquez's walk-off, three-run homer in the ninth inning Tuesday night.
"The way (the Tuesday game) was finished off, there's some momentum that I think does come out of it," Red Sox manager John Farrell said. "But that will continue I think as well as Rick Porcello (would have pitched Wednesday night)."
Despite not playing, the Red Sox extended their lead atop the American League East to a full game after the second-place New York Yankees lost 2-0 to the Detroit Tigers in a rain-delayed game.
Cleveland (57-48) is mired in a three-game losing streak after its season-high nine-game winning streak, but the Indians entered Wednesday with a two-game lead atop the AL Central over the Kansas City Royals.
"We've gotten to where we are a little bit roller-coaster-ish," Indians manager Terry Francona said. "If that's the case, you hope the highs are better than the lows. At this point, they have been.
"That's just been the nature of our (team). We've been spotty -- that's kind of the way it's been. But we've played (well) enough where we're in first place."
Cleveland returns home to start a four-game series with the Yankees on Thursday, with Corey Kluber (8-3, 2.90 ERA) drawing the start. Bauer's turn was pushed back to Friday. Kluber will oppose New York newcomer Sonny Gray, who was 6-5 with a 3.43 ERA for the Oakland A's before being acquired by the Yankees on Monday.
Boston opens a four-game series with the visiting Chicago White Sox on Thursday, with Porcello (4-14, 4.55 ERA) staying on turn to start the series opener. Miguel Gonzalez (5-9, 4.59) will pitch for the White Sox.
NOTES: Cleveland placed LHP Andrew Miller (patellar tendinitis in right knee) on the 10-day disabled list. "The hope is that after 10 days this will calm down, and the last six, seven weeks of the season he can be more of himself," manager Terry Francona said. RHP Adam Plutko was recalled from Triple-A Columbus. ... Indians RHP Josh Tomlin (left hamstring strain) is expected to miss six weeks, an MRI exam revealed Tuesday. ... Boston LHP David Price (left elbow inflammation) threw Wednesday. RHP Joe Kelly (left hamstring strain) was scheduled to throw an inning with Triple-A Pawtucket on Wednesday. RHP Carson Smith (Tommy John recovery) is on track to begin a rehab assignment Saturday with Double-A Portland. ... Red Sox president Sam Kennedy signed a five-year extension and was elevated to president and chief executive of the team and Fenway Sports Management.
