Reds agree to deal with top pick Senzel

The Reds have agreed to terms with Nick Senzel, Taylor Trammell, Chris Okey and Nick Hanson, their top four picks in the MLB Draft, the club confirmed Tuesday.

Senzel, the No. 2 overall pick out of Tennessee, will receive a $6.2 million contract bonus, according to a source. Slot value for the pick was $7,762,900.

Senzel was considered the best college bat in the Draft after batting .352 as a junior and leading the Southeastern Conference with 25 doubles. The third baseman, who turns 21 on June 29, also was named the 2015 Cape Cod League MVP after hitting a league-best .364.

"We're really excited, this is the guy we wanted. He's a very polished player -- one of the better hitters, if not the best hitter, in the Draft," Reds senior director of amateur scouting Chris Buckley said after the Draft. "We think his power will improve the more he plays. He's a complete player -- runs, throws and plays his position well."

Trammell, who the Reds selected No. 35 overall with the first pick of the Competitive Lottery Round A, will receive a $3.2 million contract bonus, according to the source. Slot value for the pick was $1,837,200.

An 18-year-old high school outfielder, Trammell batted .463 with six home runs, 19 RBIs, 30 runs scored and 22 steals as a senior at Mount Paran Christian School in Kennesaw, Ga. MLBPipeline.com ranked him as the No. 32 prospect in the Draft.

Trammell was committed to Georgia Tech, and speculation that he might not sign and attend college instead might have pushed him out of the first round.

"A lot of it had to do with why he got down there," Buckley said after the Draft.

The Reds used their second-round pick on Okey when they selected him No. 43 overall. He will receive a $2 million contract bonus, according to the source. Slot value for the pick was $1,497,500.

The 21-year-old catcher from Clemson slashed .339/.465/.611 with 15 home runs and 74 RBIs in 62 games this season.

MLBPipeline.com ranked Okey as the No. 46 prospect in the Draft. The Padres selected him out of high school in the 2013 Draft.

"He's a guy we've followed since high school," Buckley said after the Draft. "We almost picked him in high school. He's a very polished catcher. He's got a chance to be a complete catcher. He swings the bat and plays solid defense."

The Reds selected Hanson, a high-school pitcher out of Prior Lake Christian High School (Minn.), No. 79 overall. He was committed to play at the University of Kentucky and received a signing bonus of $925,000, above the pick's slot value of $801,000. The right-hander was ranked as the No. 112 prospect in the Draft.

In addition to their top four selections, the Reds also announced Tuesday that they had signed the following picks: Left-hander Joseph Cox (seventh round), right-hander Alex Webb (ninth), right-hander Lucas Benenati (10th), right-hander Aaron Quillen (22nd), infielder Bruce Yari (24th), first baseman Colby Wright (25) and right-hander Patrick Riehl (26th).
