Carlos Correa of Astros Named American League Player of the Week

Houston Astros shortstop Carlos Correa has been named the American League Player of the Week for the period ending October 1st. The announcement was made earlier today on MLB Network.

Correa batted .520 (13-for-25) with eight runs scored, four doubles, three home runs and 10 RBI over six games played to earn his third career AL Player of the Week Award, last winning for the period ending August 14, 2016. Among his AL counterparts, Carlos finished his strong week first in batting average, hits, runs scored and RBI; second in on-base percentage (.571); tied for second in doubles; tied for third in home runs; and third in slugging percentage (1.040). This is Houston's third AL Player of the Week Award this season, following Correa's All-Star teammates George Springer (June 4th) and Jose Altuve (July 9th).

Over a four-game stretch from Monday to Thursday, the Astros outscored their opponents 49-9, winning each contest by a margin of at least nine runs. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the Detroit Wolverines of the National League in 1887 were the last team to win four straight games by at least nine runs. Additionally, Houston became only the third team since 1931 to tally at least 11 runs in four consecutive games on one road trip, joining the 1950 Boston Braves and the 2000 Seattle Mariners. Correa, who notched consecutive four-hit games on Wednesday and Thursday, became the ninth player in Club history to log consecutive games with at least four hits, and the second of the 2017 season. Altuve, who has accomplished the feat three times in his career, did so earlier this season for the Astros from July 23rd-24th. Per Elias, Correa, who also notched a three-hit game on Tuesday, became the first player in team history to record three straight games with at least three hits and three RBI in a single season, and the first Major Leaguer since Victor Martinez of the Detroit Tigers in 2011. The 2015 AL Rookie of the Year Award winner became just the fifth shortstop to do so, joining Hanley Ramirez (2010), Hall of Famer Cal Ripken Jr. (1995), Alvin Dark (1956) and Glenn Wright (1928). In addition, his two-homer output on Wednesday was his third multi-homer effort of the season (also: June 29th and July 9th). Finishing his All-Star campaign with 24 round-trippers on the season, the first overall selection of the 2012 MLB Draft established a new franchise record for home runs hit by a shortstop, and he is the first shortstop in MLB history to reach the 20-homer mark in each of his first three Major League seasons.

Other noteworthy performances last week included Carlos' teammates Alex Bregman (.393, 5 R, 5 XBH, 9 RBI) and Marwin Gonzalez (.474, 4 R, 3 XBH, 8 RBI); All-Star outfielder Aaron Judge (.368, 6 R, 6 XBH, 9 RBI) and starting pitcher Masahiro Tanaka (1-0, 0.00 ERA, 7.0 IP, 15 SO) of the New York Yankees; three-time All-Star third baseman Josh Donaldson (.450, 3 2B, 3 HR, 6 RBI) of the Toronto Blue Jays; and starting pitcher Parker Bridwell (2-0, 1.98 ERA, 13.2 IP) of the Los Angeles Angels.

With his ninth home run of the 2017 campaign yesterday against Detroit, the University of Miami product matched his career high for round-trippers in a season, previously set in 2012 while a member of the San Diego Padres. Among qualified AL first basemen, Oakland's breakout slugger paces his peers in batting average (.311), on-base percentage (.386), slugging percentage (.667) and RBI (24), and is tied for the lead in home runs (9) with Marwin Gonzalez of the Houston Astros, entering play today. Alonso had not previously accomplished the feat since June 29-30, 2016.

Houston's Gonzalez (.500, 4 HR, 9 RBI, 1.313 SLG) also posted an impressive week. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the versatile utility player became the first player in MLB history (since 1901) to homer in four consecutive starts (April 27th-May 3rd), each coming from a different position (2B, 3B, LF, 1B). Rougned Odor of the Texas Rangers named American League Player of the Week

Roughed Odor.
Texas Rangers second baseman Rougned Odor has been named the American League Player of the Week for the period ending September 4th. The announcement was made earlier today on MLB Network.

Rougned batted .444 (12-for-27) with six runs scored, two doubles, five home runs, 15 RBI and a stolen base over six games to claim his second career AL Player of the Week Award, last winning with the Rangers on July 26, 2015. Among his AL counterparts, Odor finished the period first in RBI and total bases (29), tied for first in home runs and extra-base hits (7), second in hits and slugging percentage (1.074), and sixth in batting average.

Odor delivered the game-ending two-run homer in Tuesday's home tilt against the Seattle Mariners. It was the club's sixth walk-off win of the season and the Rangers' MLB-leading 40th come-from-behind win this season. The Venezuelan native followed up his memorable effort by going 3-for-5 with a pair of home runs and five RBI in a 14-1 victory over Seattle on Wednesday. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the 22-year-old became just the second player this season to follow a game ending homer with two more round-trippers in his next game, joining Toronto's Edwin Encarnacion, who accomplished the feat in June. The hard-hitting second baseman extended his home run streak the following game, homering for the third consecutive game for the first time in his career. Dating back to August 30th, Odor has logged multi-RBI efforts in six straight contests, passing teammate Mitch Moreland for the longest such streak by a Ranger in 2016, one game shy of Kevin Mench's club mark of seven games in 2006. Odor, who has now recorded 30 home runs during the 2016 campaign, joined Bryce Harper (2015), Manny Machado (2015), Mike Trout (2012, 2014), Giancarlo Stanton (2011, 2012), Miguel Cabrera (2004, 2005) and Albert Pujols (2001, 2002) as the only players since 2000 to club 30 roundtrippers, while playing a season at age 22-or-younger. Currently leading the first-place club in home runs, Odor is on pace to become the first second baseman in franchise history to lead the Rangers in homers.

Other noteworthy performances last week included Rougned's teammate Adrian Beltre (.375, 11 R, 3 HR, 7 RBI); Byron Buxton (.563, 1.313 SLG, 3 HR, 9 RBI) and Brian Dozier (.367, 6 R, 5 HR, 9 RBI) of the Minnesota Twins; C.J. Cron (.400, 7 R, 4 HR, 8 RBI), Albert Pujols (.429, 1.00 SLG, 4 HR, 7 RBI) and Mike Trout (.556, 8 R, 3 2B, 3 HR) of the Los Angeles Angels; Hanley Ramirez (.391, 8 R, 3 HR, 10 RBI) of the Boston Red Sox; and Jose Abreu (.412, 14 H, 4 HR, 13 RBI) of the Chicago White Sox.

Rangers' Mitch Moreland named American League Player of the Week

Texas Rangers first baseman Mitch Moreland has been named the American League Player of the Week for the period ending July 31st. The announcement was made earlier today on MLB Network.

Moreland batted .455 (10-for-22) with six runs scored, five home runs and nine RBI over seven games to claim his first career AL Player of the Week Award. Mitch paced the Majors in home runs, slugging percentage (1.136) and total bases (25). Among AL leaders, he also finished the period tied for first in RBI, second in batting average, tied for second in runs scored, tied for third in extrabase hits (5), tied for fourth in hits and seventh in on-base percentage (.478).

In Thursday night's series opener against the Kansas City Royals at Globe Life Park in Arlington, the Mississippi native went 2-for-3 with a pair of home runs, including the go-ahead homer in the eighth inning that propelled the Rangers to a 3-2 victory over the defending champions. It marked his second multi-homer game of the 2016 campaign (also June 10th) and 10th of his career. On Saturday against the Royals, the left-handed slugger delivered a game-ending home run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, the club's fourth walk-off win in 2016. The Rangers' three walk-off homers this season are tied for third-most in Major League Baseball, trailing the Seattle Mariners (6) and San Diego Padres (4). Saturday night was the Mississippi State University product's second career walk-off home run, last accomplishing the feat on June 21, 2011 vs. Houston Astros. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Moreland is just the third first baseman in franchise history with multiple walk-off homers, joining Pete O'Brien (3) and Rafael Palmeiro (2). With a round-tripper in Sunday's series finale with Kansas City, Moreland logged his fourth homer in as many days, while driving in a run for his career-high sixth consecutive game. Since 2014, no Rangers player has recorded a longer streak. This week's five-homer output gives the seven-year veteran seven home runs since the Midsummer Classic in San Diego, matching Khris Davis of the Oakland Athletics for most in the AL. With a 5-2 record during Moreland's award-winning week, the Rangers now lead the AL West by six games with a 62-44 record.

Red Sox's Hanley Ramirez named American League Player of the Week

Boston Red Sox first baseman Hanley Ramirez has been named the American League Player of the Week for the period ending July 24th. The announcement was made yesterday on MLB Network.

Ramirez batted .333 (7-for-21) with six runs scored, five home runs and 12 RBI over six games to claim his third career Player of the Week Award and first in the AL, last winning in the National League with the Florida Marlins on June 28, 2009. Among his AL counterparts, Hanley finished the period first in home runs, RBI and slugging percentage (1.048), tied for first in extra-base hits (5), second in total bases (22) and tied for third in runs scored.

On Wednesday night against the San Francisco Giants at Fenway Park, the right-handed slugger went 3-for-4 with three home runs and six RBI. The three-homer output tied a Red Sox single-game record, a feat accomplished 28 times by 23 different players. Hanley's teammate and 2016 AL All-Star Mookie Betts was the last player to do so, earlier this season on May 31st at Baltimore. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the only other years in which the Red Sox had two three-home run games in the same season were 1957 (both by Hall of Famer Ted Williams) and 1999 (Trot Nixon and Nomar Garciaparra). The three-time NL All-Star set career highs in home runs and RBI in the contest, and became only the seventh player in club history with at least three home runs and six RBI in a game at Fenway Park, joining Williams, Bobby Doerr, Clyde Vollmer, Norm Zauchin, Jack Clark and Garciaparra (twice). Each of Ramirez's three round-trippers came with a runner on base. According to Elias, the last player to hit three homers with at least one man on base in a game was Josh Hamilton of the Texas Rangers on May 8, 2012 at Baltimore, and the last Red Sox player to accomplish the feat was Hall of Famer Jim Rice on August 29, 1983 at Toronto. Ramirez, a native of the Dominican Republic, finished his award-winning week by going 3-for-7 with two home runs and six RBI over the weekend, establishing a season-high RBI total over any two-game stretch. Boston went 4-2 in the first full week following the 2016 Midsummer Classic and now sits just 1.5 games back of the Baltimore Orioles for the top spot in the competitive AL East.

Other noteworthy performances last week included Hanley's teammate Rick Porcello (2-0, 2.77 ERA, 13.0 IP, 11 SO); Jose Altuve (.560, 14 H, 6 RBI, .593 OBP) and George Springer (.360, 7 R, 3 2B, 7 RBI) of the Houston Astros; Corey Dickerson (.423, 6 R, 11 H, 5 XBH) of the Tampa Bay Rays; Kendall Graveman (2-0, 2.81 ERA, 1 CG, 16.0 IP) and Jake Smolinski (.500, 3 2B, .950 SLG, .565 OBP) of the Oakland Athletics; and Tyler Naquin (.389, 3 2B, 2 HR, 7 RBI) of the Cleveland Indians.

Angels' Matt Shoemaker named American League Player of the Week

Los Angeles Angels starting pitcher Matt Shoemaker has been named the American League Player of the Week for the period ending July 17th. The announcement was made yesterday on MLB Network.

Shoemaker tossed a complete-game shutout on Saturday en route to his first career AL weekly honor, the first for an Angels pitcher since his teammate Jered Weaver won on May 6, 2012. The 29-year-old paced his league counterparts in innings pitched and strikeouts (13), while matching the AL lead in ERA. Matt permitted just six hits and did not surrender a walk during his first career complete-game shutout.

The Eastern Michigan University product became the sixth AL pitcher since 2000 to log a complete-game shutout with 13-or-more strikeouts and zero walks, joining Hall of Famer Pedro Martinez, as well as Erik Bedard, Dan Haren, Hideo Nomo and Mike Mussina. Shoemaker and Haren, who accomplished the feat on May 24, 2012 against the Seattle Mariners, are the only pitchers in franchise history to record a pitching line with those totals. The strikeout total was a career-high for the three-year veteran, besting his mark of 12 punch-outs recorded earlier this season (May 21st vs. BAL), and his outing marked the sixth game this season with zero walks allowed. Earlier this season, the control specialist established a club record with 49 strikeouts without issuing a walk, shattering the previous record of 30 strikeouts set by Frank Tanana in 1976. Shoemaker recorded a streak of four consecutive starts with six-or-more strikeouts and zero walks from May 21st-June 6th, matching the third-longest streak in Major League history. Martinez (2000) and Curt Schilling (2002) each posted streaks of five outings to pace MLB history. In his last six home starts at Angel Stadium, the Michigan native has delivered a 0.80 ERA (45.2 IP, 4 ER). With this start, Shoemaker joined Hall of Famer Nolan Ryan, as well as Weaver and Andy Messersmith, as the only starters in club history to log three consecutive home games with zero runs allowed.

Other noteworthy performances last week included Khris Davis (.455, 3 HR, 5 RBI, 1.273 SLG) of the Oakland Athletics; Ian Kinsler (.500, 4 R, 2 HR, 3 RBI) and Justin Verlander (1-0, 1.29 ERA, 7.0 IP, 10 SO) of the Detroit Tigers; Jose Altuve (.500, 3 R, 3 RBI, .833 SLG) and Collin McHugh (1-0, 0.00 ERA, 6.0 IP, 10 SO) of the Houston Astros; and Mike Napoli (.417, 4 R, 2 HR, .917 SLG) of the Cleveland Indians.

In recognition of his American League Player of the Week Award, Matt Shoemaker will be awarded a watch courtesy of Game Time, the leader in licensed sports watches, available at MLB.com.
