White Sox recall RHP Juan Minaya and catcher Kevan Smith from Class AAA

Prior to tonight's series opener at Minnesota, the Chicago White Sox recalled right-handed pitcher Juan Minaya and catcher Kevan Smith from Class AAA Charlotte. The White Sox also sent right-hander Miguel Gonzalez on an injury rehabilitation assignment at Class AAA Charlotte.

Minaya, 25, went 4-3 with a 3.38 ERA (10 ER/26.2 IP), one save, 28 strikeouts and a .225 opponents average (23-102) over 17 relief appearances with Charlotte. He limited right-handers to a .159 average (10-63) with the Knights. Minaya was claimed off waivers from Houston on June 22 after being designated for assignment on June 20. He has no major-league experience and will wear uniform No. 67.

The 6-foot-4, 210-pound Minaya, a native of Maimon, Dominican Republic, was added to Houston's 40-man roster on November 20, 2015. He is 4-3 with a 4.65 ERA (10 ER/26.2 IP), 28 strikeouts and 12 saves in 211 career appearances (55 starts) over eight seasons in the Houston (2009-16) and Chicago (2016) organizations. Minaya originally was signed by the Astros as a non-drafted free agent on September 3, 2008.

Smith, 26, hit .219 (40-183) with nine doubles, eight home runs, 24 RBI and 18 runs scored over 49 games with Charlotte in 2016. Smith, who also played in two games with the Arizona League White Sox, threw out 39.5 percent (15-38) of attempted basestealers with the Knights. He has no major-league experience and will wear uniform No. 61.

Smith was recalled by the White Sox on April 24 and scheduled to make his major-league debut on April 26 at Toronto but was scratched from the lineup prior to the game. He was on the disabled list from April 26-May 22 with sacroiliac joint dysfunction. Smith is a career .282 hitter (536-1,900) with 121 doubles, 56 homers, 314 RBI and a .359 on-base percentage in 519 games over six seasons (2011-16) in the Sox system.

Gonzalez, 32, has been on the disabled list since August 12 with a strained right groin. He is 2-6 with a 4.05 ERA (46 ER/102.1 IP) in 19 appearances (18 starts) this season, his first with Chicago.

White Sox place C Kevan Smith on DL

Prior to Tuesday night's game, the Chicago White Sox placed C Kevan Smith on the 15-day disabled list.

Smith suffered back spasms during the pregame stretch Monday before what was supposed to be his major-league debut against the Blue Jays at the Rogers Centre.

In a corresponding move, the White Sox purchased the contract of C Hector Sanchez from Charlotte.

Sanchez, who will wear uniform No. 29, was signed by the White Sox as a minor-league free agent on December 22, 2015.

Sanchez was hitting .143 with a double, two home runs and three RBIs over eight games with Charlotte this year.

White Sox recall C Kevan Smith

The Chicago White Sox on Sunday placed catcher Alex Avila on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right hamstring.

As a corresponding move, the White Six recalled catcher Kevan Smith from Triple-A Charlotte.

Smith, 26, is hitting .345 (10-29) with one double, two home runs, six RBI and a .980 OPS over eight games with Charlotte this season.

With no major-league experiwnce, Smith will wear uniform No. 61 with the White Sox.

The White Sox also optioned RHP Erik Johnson to Triple-A Charlotte.
