Baseball Capsules (September 3, 2016)

CHICAGO (AP) — Jon Lester pitched 6 2/3 innings of no-hit ball and settled for his second complete game of the season, helping the sizzling Chicago Cubs beat the San Francisco Giants 2-1 on Friday to move a season-high 40 games over .500.

Hunter Pence ended Lester's bid for a second no-hitter with a homer to left on a 1-2 cutter. Brandon Crawford followed with a double, and Lester (15-4) got Eduardo Nunez to line to third and worked around Trevor Brown's one-out double in the eighth.

Lester allowed three hits and walked two. The Cubs have won five straight to improve to 87-47.

David Ross and Dexter Fowler had RBI hits in the second off Albert Suarez (3-3).

Pence's second homer in two days ended a 12 2/3-innings hitless streak for the San Francisco. The Giants are a major league-worst 15-29 since the All-Star break.

Lester walked Buster Posey with two outs in the first inning and followed by setting down 18 straight by getting some help.

Third baseman Kris Bryant made a diving, backhand grab of Crawford's liner to lead off the fifth and Dexter Fowler made a sliding catch of Kelby Tomlinson's liner in center an inning later.

The 32-year-old Lester threw a no-hitter on May 19, 2008, for Boston against Kansas City. That came less than two years after he was diagnosed with cancer.

ORIOLES 8, YANKEES 0

BALTIMORE (AP) — Mark Trumbo hit his major league-leading 41st homer to cap a six-run second inning, and Baltimore peppered New York with four long balls.

Pedro Alvarez and Chris Davis hit two-run homers in the second inning and Manny Machado added a two-run shot in the fourth. Baltimore leads the majors with 213 home runs, including 117 at home.

When Alvarez went deep, the Orioles became the 19th team in big league history to have six players hit at least 20 in the same season. Alvarez joins Trumbo, Machado (33), Davis (33), Adam Jones (24) and Jonathan Schoop (21).

Dylan Bundy (8-5) allowed two hits and four walks over 5 2/3 innings. Rookie Chad Green (2-4) yielded four runs and five hits in 1 2/3 innings before leaving with right elbow pain.

RANGERS 10, ASTROS 8

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Rougned Odor homered for the third straight game in a seven-run fourth inning, Carlos Gomez had two hits in his first game against his former team and Texas held off Houston.

The Rangers nearly squandered a seven-run lead but won their sixth straight to push their AL West advantage to 9 1/2 games over the second-place Astros. Houston lost the first of 13 straight games against division leaders to start September, six of those against Texas.

Odor's team-leading 28th home run was one of three in the fourth inning against Doug Fister (12-10), who came out after Jonathan Lucroy followed Odor's shot to right with a line drive just over the 14-foot wall in left for a 9-2 lead. Alex Bregman had a solo homer and a two-run triple but popped out to end the eighth with two runners on after the Astros had pulled within two.

A.J. Griffin (7-3) was the winner, and Sam Dyson pitched a perfect ninth for his 31st save.

Carlos Beltran also homered in the fourth, his 26th overall and fourth since coming to the Rangers from the New York Yankees at the Aug. 1 trade deadline.

NATIONALS 4, METS 1

NEW YORK (AP) — Bryce Harper hit two doubles and became the latest player to steal a base against Noah Syndergaard, helping A.J. Cole post his first major league win as Washington beat New York.

Washington won its fourth in a row and increased its NL East bulge over the wild card-contending Mets to 10 1/2 games.

Like a lot of teams, the Nationals came out running on Syndergaard (12-8), swiping four bases in the early innings. Tall and slow to the plate, he's had 45 runners steal with him on the mound — the most against any pitcher since Hideo Nomo in 2001, ESPN Stats & Info said.

Trea Turner led off the game with a single, stole two bases and scored on Harper's sacrifice fly. Harper doubled with one out in the fourth, stole third with two outs and came home on a single by Wilson Ramos. Harper's double set up Anthony Rendon's two-run single in the ninth.

Cole (1-1) gave up one run and three hits in six innings.

Asdrubal Cabrera homered for the sixth time in eight games, sending a drive over the right-center wall in the Mets' fourth.

Mark Rzepczynski, Koda Glover, Oliver Perez and Mark Melancon combined for three innings of scoreless relief. Melancon closed for his 38th save.

INDIANS 6, MARLINS 2

CLEVELAND (AP) — Carlos Carrasco struck out 11 while pitching scoreless ball into the eighth inning, and Cleveland beat Miami.

Carrasco (10-7) had the 10th double-digit strikeout game of his career and the third this season. The right-hander allowed six hits and walked one in 7 1/3 innings, leading AL Central-leading Cleveland to its fourth straight victory.

Cleveland scored three times in the first and once in the second off Andrew Cashner (4-11). Abraham Almonte's two-run double pushed the lead to 6-0 in the fifth.

J.T. Realmuto hit a two-run homer off Jeff Manship in the eighth for Miami.

TIGERS 7, ROYALS 6

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Miguel Cabrera homered and finished with three hits and four RBIs to help Detroit beat Kansas City.

Cabrera's single in the ninth off Wade Davis (1-1) scored Ian Kinsler and Jose Iglesias to put the Tigers ahead. Davis, who just came off the disabled list and had not pitched since July 22, blew his third save in 24 chances.

In the seventh, Cabrera hit a 439-foot shot off Peter Moylan. Cabrera also had an RBI single in Detroit's three-run third. Justin Upton homered in the second and added an RBI single in the third.

Francisco Rodriguez (3-3) picked up the victory, despite blowing a save in the eighth when Paulo Orlando hit a two-run single to give the Royals a 6-5 lead

RAYS 8, BLUE JAYS 3

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Alex Cobb went five solid innings during his first start in two years, Logan Morrison hit a go-ahead two-run homer, and Tampa Bay beat AL East-leading Toronto.

Cobb, coming back from Tommy John surgery, allowed two runs and four hits in his first appearance since Sept 28, 2014, at Cleveland. He struck out seven, walked one and retired his final 10 batters.

Morrison put the Rays up 4-2 in sixth on his 12th homer off Marcus Stroman (9-6).

Luke Maile hit a solo homer and Kevin Kiermaier had an RBI triple off Francisco Liriano before Brad Miller added a two-run shot against Ryan Tepera in a four-run seventh that made it 8-2.

Danny Farquhar (1-0) worked a scoreless sixth for the win.

REDS 3, CARDINALS 2

CINCINNATI (AP) — Eugenio Suarez singled up the middle with the bases loaded in the ninth inning, rallying Cincinnati past St. Louis.

Seung Hwan Oh (4-3) walked Zack Cozart on four pitches to open the ninth, and Brandon Phillips followed with a single. After Scott Schebler singled one out later to load the bases, Suarez got his first career game-ending hit. The Reds had loaded the bases in the seventh and eighth and failed to score.

Raisel Iglesias (1-1) gave up a walk in the ninth.

Yadier Molina and Randal Grichuk connected for an early lead off Anthony DeSclafani, who has been tough against St. Louis during his career. The right-hander is 3-1 in six starts against the Cardinals with a 2.25 ERA.

BRAVES 8, PHILLIES 4

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Freddie Freeman hit a tiebreaking RBI double in the ninth, Matt Kemp had four RBIs and Atlanta beat Philadelphia.

Ender Inciarte and Adonis Garcia started the ninth with consecutive singles off closer Jeanmar Gomez (3-3). Freeman then lined a double to left to put the Braves up 5-4. Kemp followed with an RBI single past a drawn-in infield. Kemp's three-run homer in the fifth tied it at 4.

Nick Markakis added an RBI double in the ninth and Tyler Flowers had a sacrifice fly.

A.J. Ellis hit a three-run homer for the Phillies.

Braves starter Joel De La Cruz allowed four runs and six hits in five innings and remained 0-7. Mauricio Cabrera (3-0) struck out three straight batters in the eighth.

ROCKIES 14, DIAMONDBACKS 7

DENVER (AP) — Nick Hundley hit a grand slam and pinch-hitter Daniel Descalso also homered in a seven-run eighth inning that sent Colorado past Arizona.

Nolan Arenado and Carlos Gonzalez each had two hits for the Rockies.

The game was tied at 7 with two outs in the eighth when Enrique Burgos (1-2) hit Charlie Blackmon with a pitch to start Colorado's rally. Arenado's single two batters later put the Rockies ahead, and after two walks, Hundley hit his ninth homer and first career slam off Silvino Bracho.

Descalso followed with the third pinch-hit homer of his career to finish the rally.

Carlos Estevez (3-7) worked a perfect eighth for the win.

BREWERS 1, PIRATES 0

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Six Milwaukee relievers picked up the slack when starter Junior Guerra's return from the disabled list lasted less than four innings, leading the Brewers past Pittsburgh.

Guerra left after 70 pitches over 3 1/3 innings in his first start since going to the disabled list with right elbow inflammation on Aug. 8. Milwaukee's bullpen limited Pittsburgh to just two hits the rest of the way as the Brewers dealt the Pirates their fourth consecutive loss.

Blaine Boyer (2-3) pitched a scoreless fifth to pick up the win. Tyler Thornburg worked the ninth for his seventh save. Scooter Gennett drove in Milwaukee's only run with an RBI-double in the sixth off Pittsburgh's Jameson Taillon (3-4).

WHITE SOX 11, TWINS 4

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Todd Frazier homered for the second straight game, Adam Eaton had four hits and the Chicago beat Minnesota,

Carlos Rodon (6-8) tied a season high with seven innings for his career-high fourth straight win as the White Sox ended a four-game losing streak.

Brian Dozier homered for Minnesota, which ended a 13-game losing streak Thursday. The Twins have the majors' worst record at 50-85.

Kyle Gibson (5-9) was the loser.

RED SOX 16, ATHLETICS 2

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — David Ortiz singled twice and drove in three runs and David Price won his fifth consecutive start for Boston.

Travis Shaw homered and had five RBIs, Hanley Ramirez added three RBIs hile Xander Bogaerts doubled and scored three runs to help the Red Sox move within one game of first-place Toronto in the AL East. Boston (75-59) moved within three wins of matching their total of last season.

Price (14-8) pitched seven solid innings against the overmatched A's. The left-hander gave up two runs and finished with seven strikeouts and three walks.

Over his last five starts Price is 5-0 with a 2.06 ERA.

Stephen Vogt had an RBI double for the A's, who have lost eight straight to Boston, dropped a season-high 20 games under .500 (57-77).

PADRES 4, DODGERS 2

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Yangervis Solarte hit a tie-breaking home run leading off the eighth inning for last-place San Diego.

The Dodgers' lead in the NL West remained at two games over the San Francisco Giants, who lost to the Cubs.

Brad Hand (4-3) got the victory, allowing one hit and striking out four in 1 2/3 innings of relief. Brandon Maurer pitched the ninth for his seventh save.

Solarte hit his career-high-tying 14th homer off Adam Liberatore (2-2) leading off the eighth. Pinch-hitter Brett Wallace added an RBI-single for a 4-2 lead.

Joc Pederson drove in both Dodgers' runs. His RBI single gave them a 1-0 lead in the fourth and his 19th homer tied the game 2-all in the sixth. They had 13 hits and stranded 11 runners.

MARINERS 11, ANGELS 8

SEATTLE (AP) — Ketel Marte had two singles and three RBIs in a nine-run second inning and Seattle stopped a five-game losing streak.

Nelson Cruz hit his 33rd homer for the Mariners, who remained four games behind Baltimore and Detroit for the final AL playoff spot.

Even after building a seven-run lead, the Mariners had a hard time putting this one away. Los Angeles scored four times in the ninth before Edwin Diaz retired star slugger Mike Trout with two on for his 12th save.

Trout hit a three-run homer to help the Angels take a 4-0 lead in the first inning.

Baseball Capsules (September 2, 2016)

ATLANTA (AP) — Freddie Freeman homered and the Atlanta Braves broke it open with a five-run fifth inning, beating the San Diego Padres 9-6 on Thursday to complete their first three-game sweep at Turner Field this season.

One day after Minnesota dipped below Atlanta to the worst record in the majors, the Braves kept on winning behind a six solid innings from Mike Foltynewicz (8-5) and another strong showing from the hitters. They scored at least seven runs for the fifth straight time at home.

Freeman put Atlanta up in the third with his 28th homer, a two-run liner into the right-field seats off Jarred Cosart (0-2). After Hector Sanchez homered for the Padres in the fifth, the Braves finished off Cosart in the bottom half. Freeman walked with the bases loaded, followed by two-run singles from both Matt Kemp and Anthony Recker.

The Padres scored three runs in the ninth off Chaz Roe before Jim Johnson came on to get the final out for his 14th save

MARLINS 6, METS 4

NEW YORK (AP) — Christian Yelich hit a three-run homer that helped Miami beat shaky Jacob deGrom to end its season-worst five-game losing streak.

Yelich homered and singled twice, drove in four runs and stole two bases. He also made a dashing, diving catch in center field with the bases loaded and two outs — that made up for him later dropping a routine fly for an error.

Jose Urena (3-5) outpitched deGrom (7-8) as Miami averted a four-game sweep. Down 6-1, the Mets made it close, boosted by pinch-hitter Asdrubal Cabrera's two-run homer in the ninth off Fernando Rodney.

The Mets fell two games behind idle St. Louis for the second wild-card spot, with the Marlins another game back.

CUBS 5, GIANTS 4

CHICAGO (AP) — Addison Russell hit a two-run single with the bases loaded in the seventh inning to lead Chicago.

The Cubs spoiled a shaky Jeff Samardzija's return to Wrigley Field and started September on a winning note after going 22-6 to match the 1932 team for the best August in franchise history.

The major league leaders also moved a season-high 39 games over .500 and 15 1/2 games ahead of St. Louis in the NL Central — their largest lead in the standings since the 1907 team finished 17 games ahead of Pittsburgh, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

The Cubs were trailing 4-3 going into the seventh when Hunter Strickland (3-2) gave up a leadoff single to Dexter Fowler and walked Kris Bryant.

Will Smith walked Ben Zobrist with one out to load the bases before retiring Jason Heyward on a pop fly. But Russell then blooped a two-run single to left off Cory Gearrin.

That gave Chicago a 5-4 lead and made a winner of Joe Smith (2-4), who worked two scoreless innings in relief after returning from a strained left hamstring.

TWINS 8, WHITE SOX 5

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Byron Buxton homered in his return to the majors, and Trevor Plouffe continued his resurgence with a two-run shot as Minnesota ended a 13-game losing streak.

Minnesota got to Chicago starter Jose Quintana, who entered the day leading the American League with a 2.77 ERA. Quintana (11-10) allowed seven runs and seven hits in five innings and saw his ERA rise to 3.05.

Ervin Santana (7-10) escaped trouble to win for the fourth time in five decisions. He gave up 11 hits and two walks, but allowed just two runs as the Twins snapped their losing streak, one off the franchise record for a season.

Brandon Kintzler recorded his 13th save in 14 chances.

White Sox recall RHP Juan Minaya and catcher Kevan Smith from Class AAA

Prior to tonight's series opener at Minnesota, the Chicago White Sox recalled right-handed pitcher Juan Minaya and catcher Kevan Smith from Class AAA Charlotte. The White Sox also sent right-hander Miguel Gonzalez on an injury rehabilitation assignment at Class AAA Charlotte.

Minaya, 25, went 4-3 with a 3.38 ERA (10 ER/26.2 IP), one save, 28 strikeouts and a .225 opponents average (23-102) over 17 relief appearances with Charlotte. He limited right-handers to a .159 average (10-63) with the Knights. Minaya was claimed off waivers from Houston on June 22 after being designated for assignment on June 20. He has no major-league experience and will wear uniform No. 67.

The 6-foot-4, 210-pound Minaya, a native of Maimon, Dominican Republic, was added to Houston's 40-man roster on November 20, 2015. He is 4-3 with a 4.65 ERA (10 ER/26.2 IP), 28 strikeouts and 12 saves in 211 career appearances (55 starts) over eight seasons in the Houston (2009-16) and Chicago (2016) organizations. Minaya originally was signed by the Astros as a non-drafted free agent on September 3, 2008.

Smith, 26, hit .219 (40-183) with nine doubles, eight home runs, 24 RBI and 18 runs scored over 49 games with Charlotte in 2016. Smith, who also played in two games with the Arizona League White Sox, threw out 39.5 percent (15-38) of attempted basestealers with the Knights. He has no major-league experience and will wear uniform No. 61.

Smith was recalled by the White Sox on April 24 and scheduled to make his major-league debut on April 26 at Toronto but was scratched from the lineup prior to the game. He was on the disabled list from April 26-May 22 with sacroiliac joint dysfunction. Smith is a career .282 hitter (536-1,900) with 121 doubles, 56 homers, 314 RBI and a .359 on-base percentage in 519 games over six seasons (2011-16) in the Sox system.

Gonzalez, 32, has been on the disabled list since August 12 with a strained right groin. He is 2-6 with a 4.05 ERA (46 ER/102.1 IP) in 19 appearances (18 starts) this season, his first with Chicago.

Blue Jays sign Josh Thole to major-league contract, option Devon Travis

The Blue Jays signed Josh Thole to a major-league
contract on Thursday.

The Toronto Blue Jays announced Thursday that they have signed catcher Josh Thole to a major-league contract, and have optioned second baseman Devon Travis to the Rookie-Advanced Bluefield Blue Jays.

Thole has 18 hits, one home run, seven RBIs, two doubles and a batting average of .158 in 114 at-bats in 47 games with the Blue Jays in 2016. He has 82 hits, two home runs, 24 RBIs and a .197 batting average since joining the Blue Jays in 2013.

Travis has posted 87 hits, two doubles, one triple, ten homers, 40 RBIs and a .293 batting average in 297 at-bats in 74 games played with the Blue Jays in 2016.

Baseball Capsules (September 1, 2016)

DENVER (AP) — Andrew Toles hit a grand slam with two outs in the ninth inning and the Los Angeles Dodgers overcome a late six-run deficit to beat the Colorado Rockies 10-8 on Wednesday night for a doubleheader split.

Down 8-2, the Dodgers scored three times in the eighth and added five more in the ninth. Toles capped the final inning with an oppose-field homer off closer Adam Ottavino (0-1) for his first career slam.

Luis Avilan (1-0) threw a scoreless eighth for the victory. Kenley Jansen pitched the ninth for his 40th save, getting David Dahl on a called third strike to end it.

The Dodgers began their comeback in the eighth with an RBI double from Yasmani Grandal, an RBI single by Joc Pederson and a sacrifice fly by Howie Kendrick. Chase Utley nearly brought in more, sending a two-out grounder up the middle with two on, but DJ LeMahieu ranged to his right, snared the ball and threw Utley out by a step to end the threat. Los Angeles scored once in the ninth on an RBI single from Josh Reddick and then loaded the bases with two outs, setting the stage for Toles.

Nolan Arenado hit a two-run homer finished with a Colorado-record 36 RBIs for the month, breaking the August record of 33 set by Andres Galarraga in 1996.

In the opener, Tyler Anderson pitched into the seventh inning in the Rockies' 7-0 victory. Anderson (5-5) allowed six hits in 6 1/3 innings against the NL West leaders. He also had an RBI single in the second in the team's first shutout at home this season.

Pinch-hitter Stephen Cardullo hit his first career homer in the seventh — on his 29th birthday.

Ross Stripling (3-6) surrendered three runs over six innings.

The doubleheader was necessitated by a rainout Tuesday.

CUBS 6, PIRATES 5

CHICAGO (AP) — Kris Bryant hit his 36th homer and made three solid plays at third base, helping Jason Hammel and Chicago top Pittsburgh for a three-game series sweep.

Addison Russell had two RBIs and an outstanding sliding catch as Chicago equaled the best August in franchise history with a 22-6 record, also accomplished in 1932. It was the Cubs' first time with 22 wins in a month since it went 22-10 in September 1945.

Heading into the final stretch of the season, the Cubs (85-47) are rapidly closing in on their first division title since 2008. They begin September with the majors' best record at a season-high 38 games over .500 and a whopping 15-game lead over second-place St. Louis in the NL Central.

Hammel (14-7) allowed three hits and struck out six after dropping his previous two starts.

Ryan Vogelsong Vogelsong was the loser.

GIANTS 4, DIAMONDBACKS 2

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Matt Moore struck out seven over 5 1/3 innings for his first career victory at AT&T Park, and San Francisco beat Arizona.

Moore walked off in the sixth to a standing ovation from the sellout crowd. The left-hander had lost his initial two home starts since being acquired from Tampa Bay. Moore (2-3) looked strong in his first game since losing a no-hit bid with two outs in the ninth inning at Dodger Stadium.

Buster Posey drove in a pair of runs for San Francisco.

Santiago Casilla relieved Sergio Romo with the bases loaded and two outs in the eighth and struck out Yasmany Tomas. Casilla finished for his 29th save.

Shelby Miller (2-10) was called up from Triple-A Reno to start. He allowed two runs and six hits in six innings.

YANKEES 5, ROYALS 4, 13 INNINGS

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Brian McCann had a sacrifice fly in the 13th inning and Dellin Betances shut down Kansas City in the bottom half in New York's victory.

Royals reliever Chris Young (3-9) gave up a single to Didi Gregorius and a double to Starlin Castro to lead off the decisive frame. Matt Strahm came in against McCann for a lefty-lefty matchup, and the New York designated hitter lofted a fly ball to left to score the go-ahead run.

Ben Heller (1-0) pitched a perfect 12th to earn his first major league win, and Betances wrapped up a winning series for the Yankees by working around a leadoff walk for his seventh save.

Castro hit a two-run homer for the Yankees. Kendrys Morales hit one for Kansas City.

METS 5, MARLINS 2

NEW YORK (AP) — Kelly Johnson's three-run double in the eighth inning broke a tie and lifted surging New York over Miami.

Yoenis Cespedes began the rally by singling off reliever A.J. Ramos (1-2). Curtis Granderson walked, and Wilmer Flores flew out to center, advancing a hustling Cespedes to third. After Jay Bruce flew out to right, Travis d'Arnaud walked to load the bases, bringing up Johnson.

Johnson drove the ball into the right-field corner. He emphatically clapped his hands and swung his arms into the air after reaching second base.

Addison Reed (4-2) pitched a perfect eighth inning for the victory, the Mets' third in a row. Jeurys Familia closed for his 44th save, establishing a franchise record.

ASTROS 4, ATHLETICS 3

HOUSTON (AP) — Evan Gattis hit an RBI single to cap a three-run rally in the eighth inning keyed by a wild pitch on a strikeout, leading Houston past Oakland.

Chasing Baltimore for the second AL wild-card slot, Houston swept the three-game series and will open a three-game set Friday at AL West-leading Texas.

A's starter Ross Detwiler gave up three hits and left after the seventh with a 3-1 lead.

Reliever Liam Hendriks (0-3) got two quick outs in the eighth before George Springer tripled. Alex Bregman then struck out, but reached when the pitch got away, allowing Springer to score.

Jose Altuve tripled home the tying run and Gattis singled for the lead.

Michael Feliz (8-1) pitched a scoreless eighth. Ken Giles closed for his seventh save.

RANGERS 14, MARINERS 1

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Rougned Odor homered twice a day after hitting a game-ending shot and Carlos Gomez connected for a grand slam off Felix Hernandez, sending Texas past Seattle for a three-game sweep.

Odor tied a career high with five RBIs, and Adrian Beltre and Ryan Rua also homered for the AL West leaders. Texas (80-54) moved a season-high 26 games over .500 with a fifth straight win.

The Rangers matched the 1999 and 2012 Texas teams as the fastest to reach 80 wins.

Odor had a two-run shot for a 10-0 lead in the seventh and a three-run homer in the eighth, and leads the team with 27 home runs. On Tuesday night, his two-run homer in the ninth gave Texas an 8-7 win.

Martin Perez (9-10) pitched six shutout innings. Hernandez (9-5) matched a season high by allowing six runs in his shortest outing, coming out after four innings.

RED SOX 8, RAYS 6

BOSTON (AP) — Hanley Ramirez hit a grand slam, and Aaron Hill later sliced an RBI single to break an eighth-inning tie to help Boston beat Tampa Bay.

Jackie Bradley Jr., who had three hits, and Xander Bogaerts each homered for the Red Sox. Dustin Pedroia had three more hits for Boston. The Red Sox had lost five of its previous seven games after moving into a tie for first place in the AL East.

Junichi Tazawa (3-2) earned the victory despite allowing a two-run single after Boston took a 6-4 lead on the homers by Ramirez and Bradley. Craig Kimbrel closed for his 24th save.

Erasmo Ramirez (7-10) gave up Hill's single and an RBI double by Bradley in the eighth.

Logan Forsythe and Logan Morrison each homered for Tampa Bay.

BREWERS 3, CARDINALS 1

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Kirk Nieuwenhuis homered, Matt Garza pitched into the eighth inning and Milwaukee beat St. Louis to end a six-game losing streak.

Nieuwenhuis hit a three-run homer off Luke Weaver (1-2) in the third inning.

Garza (5-6) turned in his longest outing of the season, giving up one run and three hits in seven-plus innings while walking two and striking out eight. Tyler Thornburg notched his sixth save in 10 chances.

Yadier Molina homered for the Cardinals.

NATIONALS 2, PHILLIES 1

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Jayson Werth homered and Gio Gonzalez pitched six strong innings to lead Washington to a three-game sweep of Philadelphia.

Wilson Ramos hit the go-ahead RBI single in the seventh inning to help NL East-leading Washington set a franchise record with its ninth straight victory over the Phillies. The Nationals remained nine games in front of the second-place New York Mets.

Gonzalez (10-9) gave up one run and two hits with four strikeouts and a walk. Shawn Kelley got the only batter he faced, Maikel Franco, to ground out to end the game for his seventh save.

Freddy Galvis homered for Philadelphia in the game was played through a persistent drizzle. Adam Morgan (1-9) lost his ninth straight.

ANGELS 3, REDS 0

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Ricky Nolasco pitched a dynamic four-hitter for his fifth career shutout and his first victory for Los Angeles, leading the Angels to an interleague sweep of Cincinnati.

C.J. Cron drove in two runs. The Angels (59-74) have won five straight and eight of 10 to climb out of last place in the AL West.

Los Angeles even won without Albert Pujols and Mike Trout, who weren't in the lineup for an early starting game before the Angels' day off.

Brandon Finnegan (8-10) struck out nine during seven strong innings of five-hit ball for the Reds. They have lost four straight and eight of 10.

INDIANS 8, TWINS 4

CLEVELAND (AP) — Corey Kluber struck out a season-high 11 and in his seventh straight victory, helping Cleveland hand Minnesota its 13th straight loss — one shy of tying the club record.

Unbeaten since July 3, Kluber (15-8) allowed three runs and six hits in eight solid innings. The right-hander is 7-0 with a 1.94 ERA in his last 10 starts.

Carlos Santana and Roberto Perez homered off Pat Dean (1-5), and Jose Ramirez hit a two-run double during a five-run fifth as the AL Central-leading Indians swept the three-game series.

Brian Dozier hit his 32nd homer, and Max Kepler also connected for the Twins

Minnesota loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth off rookie Perci Garner, making his major league debut. Bryan Shaw came on and threw a wild pitch before striking out Dozier for his first save.

BLUE JAYS 5, ORIOLES 3

BALTIMORE (AP) — Jose Bautista homered on the game's first pitch and Russell Martin went deep four batters later in support of Aaron Sanchez, leading Toronto past Baltimore.

Toronto took two of the three games in the pivotal AL East series. The fading Orioles are four games behind the first-place Blue Jays and are tied with Detroit for the second wild card spot.

Sanchez (13-2) was recalled from Class-A Dunedin to make the start. He spent 10 days in the minors to limit his innings and he took advantage of the extra rest. Sanchez allowed an unearned run and five hits with two strikeouts over six innings and a season-high 112 pitches.

Michael Saunders hit his 23rd homer, a solo shot in the eighth that made it 5-1.

Yovani Gallardo (4-7) was the loser.

TIGERS 3, WHITE SOX 2

DETROIT (AP) — JaCoby Jones doubled twice in his second major league game, then dashed home for the winning run on Tyler Collins' sacrifice fly in the ninth inning to lift Detroit past Chicago.

After a day after doubling, singling and driving in two runs in his debut, Jones scored twice to help the Tigers complete a three-game sweep.

Jones hit a leadoff double in the ninth against David Robertson (4-3) and advanced to third on Jarrod Saltalamacchia's deep flyball. Collins came up as a pinch-hitter and was able to lift the ball to left-center. Avisail Garcia made the catch, but his throw bounced before it even reached the mound.

Francisco Rodriguez (2-3) pitched the ninth.

Jose Abreu and Alex Avila homered on consecutive pitches in the fourth for the White Sox.

BRAVES 8, PADRES 1

ATLANTA (AP) — Matt Wisler had a career-high 10 strikeouts in six innings, Gordon Beckham drove in two runs with a pinch-hit bases-loaded double in the sixth and Atlanta beat San Diego.

The Braves (50-83) no longer have the majors' worst record. Minnesota (49-84) fell below Atlanta with its 13th straight loss, 8-4 to Cleveland.

Wisler (6-11) allowed one run on only four hits in his third straight win.

Oswaldo Arcia homered for the Padres. Paul Clemens (2-4) took the loss.
