Baseball Capsules (June 3, 2016)

CHICAGO (AP) — Kyle Hendricks dominated over eight innings and the Chicago Cubs backed him with four home runs, beating the Los Angeles Dodgers 7-2 Thursday for their eighth win in nine games.

Javier Baez, Jason Heyward and Kris Bryant connected against 19-year-old Julio Urias (0-1). Anthony Rizzo hit a leadoff homer against J.P. Howell in the eighth as the major league-leading Cubs took three of four from the Dodgers.

Hendricks (4-4) allowed two runs and three hits, struck out six and walked one. He pitched a complete game in his previous outing to beat Philadelphia.

Urias was simply overpowered in his second career start. The top prospect gave up six runs and eight hits in five innings.

GIANTS 6, BRAVES 0

ATLANTA (AP) — Madson Bumgarner won his sixth straight decision to match a career best and hit a two-run homer in a six-run fifth inning that led San Francisco past Atlanta.

Bumgarner (7-2) allowed four hits in 7 2/3 innings, struck out 11 and walked two, lowering his ERA to 1.91. The NL West-leading Giants have won 17 of their last 21 games and are unbeaten in Bumgarner's last eight starts.

Bumgarner hit his second homer this season and 13th of his career, a 411-foot drive into the left-field seats. He reached double digits in strikeouts for the 28th time during the regular season, including three this year.

Joe Panik and Buster Posey also hit two-run homers in the fifth inning off Aaron Blair (0-4). Bumgarner and Panik connected following walks and Posey after Matt Duffy was hit by a pitch.

DIAMONDBACKS 3, ASTROS 0

HOUSTON (AP) — Zack Greinke struck out a season-high 11, and Arizona used a three-run seventh inning to beat Houston and Dallas Keuchel in a matchup of AL Cy Young Award winners.

Greinke (7-3), the 2009 winner with Kansas City, allowed a season-low four hits — all singles — over seven innings and walked none. He won his fourth straight start and stopped Arizona's three-game skid.

Keuchel (3-7), last year's Cy Young winner, gave up three runs and six hits in six-plus innings. He has lost six of seven decisions.

Daniel Hudson struck out two in a perfect eighth. Brad Ziegler allowed one hit in the ninth and got his franchise-record 38th straight save, his 10th this season. He has the longest active saves streak among big league relievers.

YANKEES 5, TIGERS 4

DETROIT (AP) — Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman pitched out of his own bases-loaded, no-out jam in the ninth inning, helped by a slick double play and New York held off Detroit.

After scoring against relievers Dellin Betances (2-2) and Andrew Miller, Detroit was down 5-3 going into the ninth. The Tigers quickly loaded the bases against Chapman on a single, a walk and a bunt single.

Shortstop Didi Gregorius then scampered up the middle to field a hard grounder by J.D. Martinez and made a glove flip to second baseman Starlin Castro, who caught the ball with his bare hand and let go a strong, off-balance relay. A run scored on the play, with the potential tying run moving to third.

Chapman then got Tigers star Miguel Cabrera on a routine grounder for his eighth save.

Matt Boyd (0-1) took a no-hit bid into the sixth for Detroit. He allowed four runs and six hits with a walk in 6 1/3 innings.

ORIOLES 12, RED SOX 7

BALTIMORE (AP) — Mark Trumbo and Adam Jones each homered twice, Manny Machado delivered a tiebreaking drive in the seventh inning and Baltimore hit a season-high seven long balls in a win over Boston.

Pedro Alvarez and Francisco Pena also connected for the Orioles, who earned a split of the four-game series between the top two teams in the AL East.

Boston's Xander Bogaerts extended his career-high hitting streak to 26 games with a two-run double and David Ortiz hit his 16th homer to give the Red Sox a temporary 5-4 lead in the sixth.

In the seventh, Robbie Ross (0-1) walked Ryan Flaherty and gave up a single to Pena before retiring the next two batters. Junichi Tazawa came on to face Machado, who drove the right-hander's second pitch deep into the left-field seats.

The Orioles added four runs in the eighth. Mychal Givens (4-0) pitched two scoreless innings for the Orioles, who moved back within a game of first-place Boston.

INDIANS 5, ROYALS 4

CLEVELAND (AP) — Mike Napoli's sacrifice fly scored Francisco Lindor with the winning run to cap a two-run ninth inning and lift Cleveland.

The Indians rallied against Joakim Soria (2-2), filling in as closer for Wade Davis, who had pitched three of the last four days. Lindor's triple tied the game before Napoli scored the game winner.

The loss ended Kansas City's six-game winning streak.

Carlos Santana led off the Cleveland ninth with a single and made it to second on right fielder Paulo Orlando's fielding error. After Jason Kipnis' sacrifice, Lindor hit a line drive to right. Orlando attempted a diving catch but the ball rolled to the wall. Pinch-runner Michael Martinez scored and Lindor slid headfirst into third with a triple.

Napoli's fly ball to left was deep enough to score Lindor, who dived into home plate to give Cleveland its second straight walkoff win.

Tommy Hunter (2-1) pitched 1 2/3 innings.

BREWERS 4, PHILLIES 1

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Chris Carter and Jonathan Villar homered, Chase Anderson pitched effectively into the sixth inning and Milwaukee beat reeling Philadelphia.

Anderson (3-6) allowed one run and three hits, striking out six in 5 2/3 innings to help the Brewers win their eighth straight game in Philadelphia.

Maikel Franco homered for the Phillies, who have lost seven in a row.

Jerad Eickhoff (2-8) gave up two runs and eight hits in 6 2/3 innings. The right-hander left after a hard one-hopper back to the mound bounced off his foot.

Phillies reliever Hector Neris pitched out of a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the eighth. He struck out Carter, retired pinch-hitter Alex Presley on a second-to-home fielder's choice and fanned Aaron Hill to end the inning.

TWINS 6, RAYS 4

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Eduardo Nunez led off the game for Minnesota with an inside-the-park home run, Max Kepler picked up his first two major league RBIs and four Twins relievers combined for five scoreless innings in a win over Tampa Bay.

Byung Ho Park went a career-best 3 for 3 for the Twins, who had a season-most 15 hits and recovered smoothly from a rocky start by Phil Hughes that ended with a two-run homer by Evan Longoria in the fifth that put the Rays up 4-3.

Taylor Rogers (1-0) struck out two over two perfect innings for his first major league victory. Ryan Pressly and Brandon Kintzler followed with scoreless frames, and former Rays right-hander Kevin Jepsen worked the ninth for his seventh save in 10 tries.

Matt Moore misfired in his chance to win consecutive starts for the first time this year, but reliever Erasmo Ramirez (6-4) took the loss after hitting Brian Dozier on the elbow with a bases-loaded pitch in the sixth inning.

Baseball Capsules (June 2, 2016)

NEW YORK (AP) Relief pitcher Matt Albers doubled leading off the 13th inning for his first hit since 2007 and scored the tiebreaking run, his first in the majors, to helpChicago rally past New York, helped by Todd Frazier's major league-leading 17th homer.

Albers (2-4) relieved closer David Robertson to start the 12th and led off the 13th in his first at-bat since 2009. With the outfield playing shallow, he lined a 1-2 pitch from Logan Verrett (3-3) to left-center, and the ball rolled to the fence on two hops. Unaccustomed to baserunning, Albers didn't slide at second and steadied himself against second baseman Neil Walker to avoid coming off the base.

A 33-year-old right-hander who has spent most of his career in the American League, Albers had been 2 for 34 (.059) at the plate in his major league career and had not even batted since 2009. He chugged to third on a wild pitch that went to the backstop and scored standing up on Jose Abreu's sacrifice fly.

ATHLETICS 5, TWINS 1

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Danny Valencia had three hits, including a pair of doubles; Billy Butler added two hits and an RBI and Oakland beat Minnesota to win its fifth straight game.

The Brewers scratched out two runs in the first off Jaime Garcia (4-5) and added insurance with Martin Maldonado's solo homer in the sixth.

CUBS 2, DODGERS 1

CHICAGO (AP) - Jon Lester pitched a four-hitter for his first complete game of the season, helping Chicago edge Los Angelesdespite another lackluster night at the plate.

The Cubs finished with just three hits against Mike Bolsinger (1-2) and two relievers after they managed only one in Tuesday night's 5-0 loss to Los Angeles. But one of Chicago's hits was a long, two-run homer to center field by Kris Bryant in the third inning, and Lester (6-3) took over from there.

The left-hander struck out 10 and walked none in his second straight win, settling down quite nicely after Kike Hernandez's leadoff homer on his second pitch. He retired his last 15 batters and threw 113 pitches in his 13th career complete game and first since a 2-1 win at Pittsburgh on Sept. 15.

The major league-leading Cubs (36-15) won for the seventh time in eight games.

BALTIMORE (AP) — Mookie Betts hit a career-high three homers and drove in five runs, and the Boston Red Sox cruised past the Baltimore Orioles 6-2 on Tuesday night to open a three-game lead in the AL East.

Betts led off the game with a shot to center and added a three-run drive to left in the second inning. After lining out to second base in the fourth, Betts hit a bases-empty homer to right in the seventh.

Batting in the ninth inning with a chance to tie the major league record of four homers in a game, Betts grounded out to second against rookie Ashur Tolliver.

Still, he's the first Boston player to hit three homers in a game since Will Middlebrooks against Toronto on April 7, 2013. Betts' 12 home runs rank second on the team behind David Ortiz, who has 14.

Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts stretched his career-best hitting streak to 24 games with a single in the seventh inning.

DODGERS 5, CUBS 0

CHICAGO (AP) — Scott Kazmir and two relievers combined on a one-hitter, matching zeros with Chicago ace Jake Arrieta before Los Angeles got to the Cubs' bullpen for a victory.

Arrieta went seven scoreless innings but was denied his 21st consecutive victory. The Cubs had won in Arrieta's last 23 starts.

Cubs left-hander Clayton Richard (0-1) gave up three straight singles to lefties in the eighth, the last Adrian Gonzalez's liner to left that scored Chase Utley and ended the Dodgers' 16-inning scoreless streak.

Corey Seager hit a three-run homer off Trevor Cahill in the ninth.

Joe Blanton (3-2) struck out three in two perfect innings as the Dodgers snapped the Cubs' six-game winning streak.

WHITE SOX 6, METS 4

NEW YORK (AP) — Tyler Saladino hit a go-ahead homer in the eighth inning and Chicago rallied from an early four-run deficit, stopping a seven-game losing streak with a victory over New York.

Todd Frazier's two-run drive was his 16th homer this season, giving him the major league lead, and the White Sox got four innings of scoreless relief from their beleaguered bullpen to win for only the fifth time in 20 games.

The Mets led 4-0 after three innings, but rookie Steven Matz, trying to win his eighth consecutive start, suddenly faded in the sixth and gave up three quick runs.

Melky Cabrera drew a leadoff walk in the eighth from Hansel Robles (0-3). One out later, Saladino sent a 2-2 fastball to left field for his third home run, putting Chicago in front 5-4.

ANGELS 11, TIGERS 9

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — C.J. Cron ended the game with his second homer, and Los Angeles blew a seven-run lead before rallying for a victory over Detroit.

Cron's two-run shot to left against Mark Lowe (1-3) was the ninth homer of the game in a park that isn't known for power hitting, particularly at night. Cron also homered in the first inning of the Angels' 17-hit performance during their ninth consecutive home victory over the Tigers.

Ian Kinsler hit a grand slam in the seventh before Victor Martinez's solo shot tied it in the eighth for the Tigers, who rallied from a 9-2 deficit in the sixth inning.

Mike Trout hit a three-run homer and Cron drove in five runs for the Angels.

Murphy broke a 1-1 tie in the sixth with a two-out solo homer off Aaron Nola (4-4) and added an infield single in the eighth. He hit .416 in May (47 for 113) with seven homers and 23 RBIs, tying the franchise record for hits in a month, shared by Al Oliver (August 1982) and Marquis Grissom (June 1994) of the Montreal Expos. He finished the month with a 10-game hitting streak.

ROYALS 10, RAYS 5

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Lorenzo Cain homered and drove in four runs as Kansas City beat Tampa Bay, extending its winning streak to a season-best five games.

The Royals, who have won six straight series, took a two-game lead in the AL Central after being seven games out and in fourth place on May 10.

Cain hit a two-run homer in the first and a two-run single during a five-run fifth when the Royals batted around.

Kendrys Morales homered — a two-run shot in the sixth — and drove in three runs for the Royals while Eric Hosmer had three hits and drove in two runs. Hosmer is 13 for 30 with 13 RBIs on this homestand.

Royals right-hander Dillon Gee (2-2) labored through five innings to pick up the victory.

ROCKIES 17, REDS 4

DENVER (AP) — Nolan Arenado and Charlie Blackmon each hit two of Colorado's team record-tying seven homers, powering the Rockies to a win over Cincinnati.

Blackmon became the first player in Rockies history to hit leadoff homers in back-to-back games and added his first career grand slam in the seventh. Carlos Gonzalez homered for a fourth straight game, while D.J. LeMahieu and Gerardo Parra also went deep.

It was the first time Colorado hit seven homers at Coors Field. The team also had seven on April 5, 1997, in Montreal.

The seven innings matched Peavy's longest outing of the season. The 35-year-old right-hander lowered his ERA from 7.26 to 6.34.
