Blue Jays League Championship Series roster substitution approved

Major League Baseball announced yesterday that it has approved a roster substitution for the Toronto Blue Jays due to an injury sustained by infielder Devon Travis. Travis will be replaced on the American League Championship Series roster by infielder Justin Smoak.

Travis underwent an MRI exam yesterday, and Dr. Gary Green, MLB Medical Director, confirmed the injury after communicating with the evaluating physician, as well as reviewing the test imaging and Travis' medical history.

MLB Postseason rules provide that a Club may request permission from the Commissioner's Office to replace a player who is unable to play because of an injury. The Commissioner's Office may approve or disapprove the request based on the specific facts and circumstances. In accordance with the rules, Travis will be ineligible to return in the World Series if the Blue Jays advance.
