Red Sox activate left-handed pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez from 15-day disabled list

Red Sox Press Release.

Prior to tonight's game against the Baltimore Orioles, Boston Red Sox left-handed pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez was returned from his injury rehab assignment with Triple-A Pawtucket and activated from the 15-day disabled list. To make room on the 25-man roster, right-handed pitcher Heath Hembree was optioned to Pawtucket following yesterday's game against the Orioles. Rodriguez will start tonight's game against Baltimore at Camden Yards beginning at 7:05 p.m.

President of Baseball Operations David Dombrowski made the announcement.

Rodriguez, who was placed on the disabled list with right patella subluxation on April 3, made five starts over two rehab assignments with the PawSox, going 0-3 with a 3.54 ERA (11 ER/28.0 IP). The 23-year-old most recently threw 102 pitches last Tuesday against Lehigh Valley, allowing only one run on four hits while striking out seven batters and walking none in 7.0 innings. Acquired by the Red Sox from the Orioles on July 31, 2014, Rodriguez made his major league debut last season and went 10-6 with a 3.85 ERA (52 ER/121.2 IP) in 21 starts, earning Red Sox Pitcher of the Year and Rookie of the Year honors from the Boston Baseball Writers' Association of America. In 101 minor league appearances (100 starts) between the Orioles and Red Sox organizations, the Venezuela native is 29-33 with a 3.25 ERA (203 ER/562.2 IP) and five complete games.

Hembree, 27, is 2-0 with a 2.14 ERA (5 ER/21.0 IP) and 18 strikeouts in 12 relief outings with the Red Sox this season. The right-hander was recalled by Boston on April 19 for his first major league stint of 2016 and remained with the club through yesterday's game, with the Red Sox going 9-3 in his appearances. Acquired by Boston from the San Francisco Giants on July 26, 2014, Hembree is 4-0 with a 2.81 ERA (20 ER/64.0 IP) in 49 games-all in relief-between the Giants and Red Sox. The South Carolina native has also made 246 minor league appearances (one start) between the two organizations, going 4-15 with a 3.07 ERA (84 ER/246.1 IP). He has not allowed a run in four outings with Pawtucket this season, surrendering only two hits and recording nine strikeouts without issuing a walk in 5.0 innings pitched.

Baseball Capsules (May 31, 2016)

NEW YORK (AP) — Matt Harvey rediscovered his form with seven dominant innings of two-hit ball, Neil Walker homered off Jose Quintana, and the New York Mets beat Chicago 1-0 Monday to send the reeling White Sox to their seventh straight loss.

Harvey (4-7) has been one of baseball's biggest puzzles, transforming from a premier pitcher to baffled ballplayer.

With both teams wearing special Memorial Day uniforms with camouflage lettering and trim, Harvey struck out six and walked two to win for the first time since May 8. His fastball velocity was up markedly, and he threw 61 of 87 pitches for strikes.

Addison Reed struck out two in a perfect eighth. After wasting a four-run lead in the Mets' win over Los Angeles on Friday and giving up a pair of ninth-inning runs in Sunday's loss to the Dodgers, Jeurys Familia got three straight outs to remain perfect in 17 save chances. He has converted 33 consecutive save opportunities dating to last season.

Quintana (5-5) was almost as good but has lost four straight starts for the first time in his big league career. He allowed four singles before Walker led off the Mets' seventh with his 12th homer, a drive over the 370-foot sign in left.

RED SOX 7, ORIOLES 2

BALTIMORE (AP) — Xander Bogaerts extended his hitting streak to 23 games and drove in two runs, Jackie Bradley put Boston ahead for good with a sixth-inning homer and the Red Sox beat Baltimore in a matchup of the top two teams in the AL East.

David Ortiz and rookie Marco Hernandez also homered for the Red Sox, who stretched their division lead to two games. Both drives came in a four-run eighth.

Knuckleballer Steven Wright (5-4) pitched a four-hitter, striking out seven and walking five in his third straight complete game.

Mookie Betts scored twice on RBIs by Bogaerts before Bradley connected off Tyler Wilson (2-4) leading off the sixth. Bradley's 29-game hitting streak, which ended last week, is the only one this season longer than Bogaerts' career-best run.

CUBS 2, DODGERS 0

CHICAGO (AP) — Travis Wood and three other relievers combined for seven perfect innings after starter Jason Hammel left with cramps, and Chicago held Los Angeles to one hit in a victory.

Hammel exited after his right hamstring cramped while warming up for the third inning. Wood (3-0) pitched four perfect innings in his longest stint of the season.

Justin Grimm, Pedro Strop and Hector Rondon pitched one inning each for the Cubs, with Rondon getting his ninth save. He has converted 20 straight save opportunities dating back to Aug. 14.

Ben Zobrist extended his hitting streak to a career-high-tying 16 games. He singled leading off the fifth and reached third when right fielder Yasiel Puig misplayed the ball. He scored on Jason Heyward's infield single.

Dodgers starting pitcher Alex Wood (1-4) gave up two runs and seven hits in five innings.

ANGELS 5, TIGERS 1

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Jhoulys Chacin threw a four-hitter to win a scintillating duel with Justin Verlander, and Cliff Pennington's tiebreaking RBI single during a five-run eighth inning propelled Los Angeles over Detroit.

Chacin (1-1) and Verlander (4-5) combined to retire the first 27 batters at Angel Stadium before C.J. Cron's single leading off the fifth for Los Angeles. Chacin lost his own perfect game bid on Andrew Romine's two-out single in the sixth.

The pitchers traded zeros until the Angels led off the eighth with three straight singles against Verlander, who gave up one hit in the first seven innings of Detroit's fourth loss in five games.

Chacin threw his third career complete game in his fourth start for Los Angeles.

NATIONALS 4, PHILLIES 3

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Daniel Murphy hit a solo homer and tiebreaking two-run single, Tanner Roark threw seven sharp innings and Washington held on for a win over Philadelphia.

Bryce Harper left the game shortly after taking a fastball off the outside part of his right knee in the seventh. The reigning NL MVP went to first base, got doubled off on Murphy's fly out to left and was replaced by Chris Heisey in right field in the bottom half.

Roark (4-4) gave up two runs and four hits. Felipe Rivero pitched the eighth and Jonathan Papelbon escaped trouble in the ninth for his 14th save in 16 tries.

Maikel Franco and Ryan Howard hit consecutive doubles off their former teammate to start bottom of the ninth and get the Phillies within one run. But Papelbon struck out pinch-hitter Tommy Joseph and Cesar Hernandez and retired Tyler Goeddel on a liner to second.

Jeremy Hellickson threw seven impressive innings for the Phillies before the Nationals rallied off Hector Neris (1-2).

BLUE JAYS 4, YANKEES 2

TORONTO (AP) — Marco Estrada pitched eight scoreless innings, Ryan Goins homered and Toronto beat New York for its fifth win in six games.

Estrada (3-2) allowed three hits and won back-to-back starts for the first time this season. He beat the Yankees in New York last week.

Estrada's start came at a perfect time for the Blue Jays bullpen, which was worn down following Sunday's 11-inning loss to Boston. Four Toronto relievers, including closer Roberto Osuna, were unavailable against New York.

After Aaron Loup gave up a two-run home run to Brian McCann in the ninth, Drew Storen came on and got the final two outs for his third save.

Ivan Nova (3-3) allowed four runs and eight hits in six-plus innings, losing to Toronto for the second straight start.

CARDINALS 6, BREWERS 0

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Matt Carpenter had four hits and scored three times, Carlos Martinez pitched eight innings and St. Louis beat Milwaukee.

Martinez (5-5) allowed five singles, walked one and struck out eight, rebounding nicely after having allowed at least four runs in each of his three previous starts.

Carpenter sparked the offense from the leadoff spot. He even scored from second in the seventh after catcher Jonathan Lucroy lost track of a wild pitch by Jhan Marinez that trickled to the backstop.

St. Louis also took advantage of shaky defense to score three runs in the third off Junior Guerra (3-1), who allowed eight hits and three earned runs in 6 1/3 innings.

ATHLETICS 3, TWINS 2

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Coco Crisp homered leading off the game, Khris Davis hit a tiebreaking sacrifice fly in the sixth inning and Oakland beat Minnesota.

Jed Lowrie added two hits and scored the game-winning run for Oakland while first baseman Yonder Alonso singled, scored and made a diving catch to end a threat in the seventh and strand the potential tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position.

Kendall Graveman (2-6) pitched six uneven innings to win for the first time in more than a month for the A's. Oakland has won three straight since dropping the opener of this six-game homestand.

All of the A's runs came off Twins starter Erwin Santana, who had only lost twice in 12 previous career starts at the Coliseum. Santana (1-4) gave up seven hits in seven innings with five strikeouts.

REDS 11, ROCKIES 8

DENVER (AP) — Adam Duvall had his first career two-homer game, Joey Votto hit his 200th homer and Eugenio Suarez — who came in mired in an 0-for-28 skid — also went deep in Cincinnati's victory over Colorado.

Zack Cozart also homered for the light-hitting Reds, who collected a season-best 17 hits.

The Rockies gave up five homers after entering the game having allowed a major league-low 15 in the month of May.

Dan Straily (3-2) overcame a slow start and an early 5-1 deficit to pick up the win. He helped himself by drawing a walk and scoring a run in Cincinnati's five-run fourth inning rally that turned things around.

Votto led off the seventh with his eighth homer, a no-doubt shot off Jason Motte over the scoreboard in right that made him the seventh Reds player to have 200 homers among his 1,000-plus career hits.

Straily surrendered Daniel Descalso's bases-clearing double and gave up an RBI single to Gerardo Parra in the third when swirling winds wreaked havoc on fly balls.

Straily drew a walk from Chad Bettis (4-4) in the fourth, when the Reds rebounded for five runs and seven hits to chase Bettis, who failed to hold a 5-1 lead.

ASTROS 8, DIAMONDBACKS 3

PHOENIX (AP) — Collin McHugh struck out eight in his first career complete game, Jason Castro had three RBIs and Houston continued its recent surge with a win over Arizona.

The Astros jumped on Edwin Escobar (0-1) in his first big league start, scoring eight runs off the left-hander in 3 1/3 innings.

Castro hit a two-run double off Escobar in the third inning and Houston had 13 hits overall to win for the sixth time in seven games. Astros leadoff hitter George Springer added three hits, two runs and an RBI.

McHugh (5-4) gave up a solo homer to Paul Goldschmidt in the first inning, but retired 21 of the next 22 batters in the five-hitter.

MARINERS 9, PADRES 3

SEATTLE (AP) — Kyle Seager's two-run homer in the sixth inning snapped a 2-all tie and Dae-Ho Lee's three-run shot capped a five-run eighth inning to give Seattle a victory over San Diego.

Seager's ninth homer of the season broke a 2-all tie and capped a four-run sixth inning for the Mariners. The two-run shot bounced off the top of the wall in right-center field and barely eluded the glove of San Diego's Matt Kemp.

The Padres lost for the seventh time in eight games as starter Andrew Cashner (2-5) pitching a season-high 6 1/3 innings.

Seattle did very little the first two times through the batting order against Cashner, but was given a chance to rally thanks to a solid outing from Nathan Karns (5-1), who won his fifth straight decision.

BRAVES 5, GIANTS 3

ATLANTA (AP) — Mallex Smith hit a three-run triple in the second inning, Mike Foltynewicz continued his recent upswing by allowing only three hits and one run in six-plus innings and Atlanta beat Jeff Samardzija and San Francisco Giants.

The Braves survived San Francisco's two-run, ninth-inning rally.

Brandon Crawford's run-scoring single in the ninth was the Giants' third straight hit off Arodys Vizcaino. The closer struck out Jarrett Parker before second baseman Kelly Johnson bobbled pinch-hitter Buster Posey's grounder, allowing another run to score. Kolby Tomlinson's grounder to third base ended the game.

Foltynewicz (2-2) gave up a leadoff homer to Brandon Belt in the second inning but allowed only one other runner to advance to second. He was lifted after allowing a leadoff single to Hunter Pence in the seventh, only his third hit allowed. He had two walks and four strikeouts and lowered his ERA to 3.51.

Samardzija (7-3) was looking for his fourth straight win as a starter for the first time in his career. The right-hander allowed five runs, four earned, and six hits and two walks in five innings — his shortest start of the season.

RANGERS 9, INDIANS 2

CLEVELAND (AP) — Nomar Mazara hit a three-run homer, Ian Desmond had a two-run shot and Texas beat Cleveland.

Derek Holland (4-4) pitched six innings and gave up one run — a solo homer by Mike Napoli — to win for the first time since April 30.

Josh Tomlin (7-1) lasted 3 2/3 innings and lost for the first time since Sept. 15. The right-hander was 12-0 in 13 starts following a Cleveland loss dating back to last season.

PIRATES 10, MARLINS 0

MIAMI (AP) — Jeff Locke tossed a three-hitter and Pittsburgh beat Miami.

Gregory Polanco's grand slam, Sean Rodriguez's two-run homer, and David Freese's four hits helped power the offense for the Pirates, who won the first of a four-game series in Miami. The first two games were originally scheduled to be played in Puerto Rico, but were moved due to concerns of the Zika virus.

Locke (4-3) struck out one and did not walk a batter while throwing 67 of 105 pitches for strikes. It was his first complete game in 101 career starts. Locke retired 19 straight at one point and needed just six pitches to get through the seventh inning.

The announced crowd of 10,856 was a season-low for the Marlins, who entered the day averaging just under 20,000.

Marlins starter Justin Nicolino (2-3) allowed three runs and six hits in five innings.

ROYALS 6, RAYS 2

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Eric Hosmer hit a three-run homer after Lorenzo Cain drove in the go-ahead run in a four-run eighth inning and Kansas City defeated Tampa Bay.

The Royals have won four straight, matching their season best streak, and have scored 19 runs after the sixth innings in those victories.

Cain's single scored Alcides Escobar with the first run of the inning before Hosmer took a pitch from Erasmo Ramirez (6-3) deep to right-center for his 10th home run.

Kelvin Herrera (1-1) blew the save, allowing a run in the eighth, but he picked up the victory. Steve Pearce scored from second on an infield single by Steven Souza Jr. to tie it at 2.

According to Baseball Reference data going back to 1913, the Yankees' only other one-hit win was when Charlie Mullen had an RBI single to beat Cleveland in six innings in a doubleheader nightcap on July 10, 1914.

Mariners acquire INF Patrick Kivlehan from Texas Rangers

Mariners Press Release.

Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced today that the club has acquired infielder Patrick Kivlehan from the Texas Rangers in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations. To make room on the Mariners 40-man roster, RHP Evan Scribner was transferred to the 60-day disabled list.

Kivlehan, 26, hit .184 (26x141) with 17 runs scored, 8 doubles, 1 home run, 16 RBI, 11 walks and 2 stolen bases in 36 games with AAA Round Rock this season. He has appeared in games at 3 different positions, including first base (16 GS), third base (16 GS) and designated hitter (4 GS). Kivlehan was the player to be named later from the November 16th trade with the Rangers in which the Mariners acquired outfielder Leonys Martin and right-handed pitcher Anthony Bass from Texas in exchange for right-handed pitcher Tom Wilhelmsen, outfielder James Jones and a PTBNL.

Kivlehan was the Mariners 4th round selection in the 2012 First-Year Player Draft out of Rutgers University. In four minor league seasons in the Mariners organization, he hit .288 (507x1762) with 262 runs, 99 doubles, 16 triples, 70 home runs, 318 RBI, 54 stolen bases, a .352 on-base percentage and a .481 slugging percentage in 461 games. His 22 home runs ranked T7th in the Pacific Coast League. He also participated for the U.S.A. in the Pan Am Games, hitting .342 with a team-leading 3 home runs.

Scribner, 30, has not pitched this season after being placed on the 15-day disabled list on April 3 (retroactive to March 25) with a strained right latissimus dorsi muscle.

Scribner was 2-2 with a 4.35 ERA in a career-high 54 appearances for Oakland in 2015. He struck out 64 hitters in 60.0 innings pitched while walking just 4 (out of 238 batters faced). His 16-to-1 strikeout ratio last season led all Major League relievers, as did his 0.60 walks per 9.0 innings pitched. Scribner missed the month of September with a strained right latissimus dorsi muscle.

Scribner has pitched in the Majors for parts of five seasons with Oakland (2012-2015) and San Diego (2011). In his big league career, he is 5-2 with a 4.21 ERA in 125 relief appearances. He's struck out 134 batters while walking only 27 in 147.2 innings pitched.

Baseball Capsules (May 29, 2016)

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Brett Eibner capped Kansas City's seven-run ninth inning with a game-ending RBI single, lifting the Royals to a stunning 8-7 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Saturday.

Jarrod Dyson was walked intentionally before Eibner drove a full-count pitch from Tommy Kahnle (0-1) off first baseman Jose Abreu and into right field. Drew Butera, who replaced Salvador Perez after the All-Star catcher got hurt in a collision, scampered home as Eibner was mobbed by his jubilant teammates near first.

Chien-Ming Wang (3-0) pitched two scoreless innings for the win. White Sox closer David Robertson began the ninth inning, but was pulled with two outs and charged with six runs and four hits.

Perez was injured in the ninth when third baseman Cheslor Cuthbert slid with a forearm and elbow into the left thigh of the All-Star catcher. Perez immediately raised his right arm, signaling for assistance. Two minutes later, Perez hobbled off the field with his arms draped over the shoulders of manager Ned Yost and an athletic trainer.

DODGERS 9, METS 1

NEW YORK (AP) — Chase Utley hit a grand slam and a solo homer after Noah Syndergaard threw a 99 mph fastball behind his back, and Los Angeles went deep a season-high five times in routing New York.

In a scene that seemed inevitable since October, Syndergaard was immediately ejected following the third-inning pitch — almost certainly his shot at retaliation against Utley for the late takeout slide that broke the right leg of then-Mets shortstop Ruben Tejada in last year's playoffs.

Plate umpire Adam Hamari tossed Syndergaard, sending Mets manager Terry Collins into a rage and his own ejection, but no trouble ensued between the teams.

Kenta Maeda (4-3) shook off an early line drive that appeared to hit him in the pitching hand and threw five shutout innings for the win.

Logan Verrett (3-2) relieved Syndergaard and gave up two runs in 3 2/3 innings for the loss.

CARDINALS 9, NATIONALS 4

WASHINGTON (AP) — Adam Wainwright pitched seven gritty innings and made an ample contribution at the plate, hitting a two-run double to help St. Louis defeat Washington.

Matt Holliday homered for the Cardinals, who took control with a four-run second inning highlighted by Wainwright's fifth extra-base hit of the season.

With two on, two outs and a run in, Wainwright lined the first pitch from Gio Gonzalez (3-3) into the left-center gap. Matt Carpenter, activated from the paternity list before the game, followed with an RBI double for a 4-0 lead. That started Wainwright (5-3) on a path to his fifth straight win. The right-hander allowed four runs and six hits — including a career-record tying three home runs. He struck out five and walked none.

RANGERS 5, PIRATES 2

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Yu Darvish struck out seven in five strong innings in his first start in the majors in almost 22 months, and Texas beat Pittsburgh.

The Japanese right-hander allowed three singles with a walk in his return from last year's Tommy John surgery, ending Pittsburgh's five-game winning streak.

Adrian Beltre had a two-run homer in the first inning off Juan Nicasio (3-3) to become the fourth third baseman with at least 1,500 RBIs, finishing with 1,501.

Mitch Moreland snapped a 1-for-27 skid with a solo home run in the fourth.

The "Yuuu" calls from a sellout crowd started early for Darvish, who last pitched in the big leagues on Aug. 9, 2014.

GIANTS 10, ROCKIES 5

DENVER (AP) — Buster Posey hit a pair of three-run homers, including a tiebreaking drive as part of a six-run eighth inning, and San Francisco rallied for the win.

The Rockies were limited to one run over six innings by Madison Bumgarner, but broke out in the seventh against five relievers for a 5-4 lead.

San Francisco responded with six runs in the eighth. Posey led the charge with a towering homer to right-center off Carlos Estevez (1-2).

Cory Gearrin (1-0) threw 1 1/3 scoreless innings to earn his first win since May 28, 2013.

BLUE JAYS 10, RED SOX 9

TORONTO (AP) — Devon Travis drove in Russell Martin with a game-ending RBI single, helping Toronto rally for the win.

David Ortiz hit a tiebreaking homer for the Red Sox in the ninth, but the Blue Jays responded with two runs in the bottom half. After Boston closer Craig Kimbrel (0-2) retired Edwin Encarnacion and Michael Saunders, Justin Smoak singled on a line drive to center and Martin drove in pinch-runner Ezequiel Carrera with a tying double.

After Martin advanced on a wild pitch, Travis forced third baseman Travis Shaw to stretch to corral a shot, and though he tried to throw Travis out at first, his throw was dropped by Hanley Ramirez and Martin scored.

Boston shortstop Xander Bogaerts extended his hitting streak to a career-high 21 games with a homer off the top of the left-center-field wall in the fourth inning.

Gavin Floyd (2-3) pitched an inning for the win.

RAYS 9, YANKEES 5

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Evan Longoria homered and drove in four runs, powering Tampa Bay to the victory.

Longoria had a sacrifice fly during a three-run first, boosted the lead to 5-0 with a two-run homer in the second and chased Michael Pineda with an RBI single in the fourth that made it 6-1.

Pineda (2-6) allowed six runs and nine hits in 3 2/3 innings. His 6.92 ERA is the highest among 104 qualifying pitchers in the major leagues.

Matt Moore (2-3), winless in his six previous starts, gave up three runs and eight hits in 6 2/3 innings as the Rays won for the second time in eight games. New York lost for the third time in 10 games.

Carlos Beltran hit a solo homer off Moore in the fourth for his 2,500th hit.

REDS 7, BREWERS 6

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Joey Votto scored the go-ahead run in the ninth after an inning-ending double play was overturned, and Cincinnati snapped its 11-game losing streak.

The Reds completed their comeback from a 6-1 deficit when umpires ruled after the review that infielder Scooter Gennett didn't have his foot on second while trying to turn a double play on Adam Duvall's bouncer.

The review came after manager Bryan Price, who was out of challenges, spoke to crew chief Jim Joyce. Cincinnati scratched its way for the go-ahead run off typically tough reliever Jeremy Jeffress (1-1).

Blake Wood (4-1) tossed two scoreless innings for the win. Tony Cingrani gave up a two-out walk to Chris Carter in the ninth, but struck out pinch hitter Martin Maldonado to secure his fourth save.

CUBS 4, PHILLIES 1

CHICAGO (AP) — Kyle Hendricks pitched a five-hitter for his second career complete game, leading the Cubs to their fourth straight win.

Hendricks (3-4) struck out seven and walked none. He was in line for his second career shutout before giving up a run in the ninth.

Dexter Fowler sparked a two-run first against Jerad Eickhoff (2-7) with his sixth home run.

Jason Heyward had two doubles for Chicago. Ben Zobrist had two hits, including an RBI double, to extend his streak to 14 games.

The Phillies lost for the sixth time in eight games.

ATHLETICS 12, TIGERS 3

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Billy Butler, Khris Davis and Danny Valencia homered, and Oakland stopped a three-game losing streak.

Coco Crisp and Jake Smolinski each drove in two runs as the A's reached double figures in scoring for the first time this season.

Jesse Hahn (2-2) pitched six innings, giving up three runs to remain undefeated against the Tigers in three starts. He walked four and struck out five.

Warwick Saupold (1-1) got the loss. The Tigers had won nine of 11.

INDIANS 11, ORIOLES 4

CLEVELAND (AP) — Yan Gomes drove in three runs and Danny Salazar allowed two runs in six innings, leading the Indians to the victory.

Gomes' two-run single highlighted a four-run first, and he added an RBI single in the fifth. Mike Napoli drove in two runs for the Indians, who had 13 hits and moved into first place in the AL Central.

Salazar (5-3) struck out five and walked two while rebounding from his worst start of the season.

Baltimore's Ubaldo Jimenez (2-6) was charged with six runs in 1 2/3 innings. Third baseman Pedro Alvarez's error in the first made three of the runs unearned.

BRAVES 7, MARLINS 2

ATLANTA (AP) — Gordon Beckham hit a three-run homer, Nick Markakis drove in two runs and Atlanta secured its first home series win of the season.

The Braves improved to a still-dismal 4-20 at Turner Field by winning the first two games of the three-game set. Atlanta rallied from a 2-0 deficit for the second straight day.

The Braves are 5-0 against the Marlins and 9-34 against all other teams. Atlanta swept a three-game series at Miami on April 15-17.

Atlanta took the lead by scoring three runs in the sixth off Jose Urena (1-1). Beckham hit his homer off Edwin Jackson after Jackson walked two batters in the seventh.

The Marlins committed three errors, including two by center fielder Marcell Ozuna.

Eric O'Flaherty (1-3) got the win.

ASTROS 4, ANGELS 2

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Cy Young Award winner Dallas Keuchel pitched seven innings to snap a personal five-game losing streak and Jason Castro hit a go-ahead two-run homer to lift the Houston Astros over the Los Angeles Angels.

Keuchel (3-6) retired the final 18 batters he faced. He had not won a game since April 15 and entered this one with a 5.92 ERA. After giving up back-to-back solo home runs to Mike Trout and Albert Pujols in the first inning, Keuchel found his groove, allowing only one other hit. Luke Gregerson got his 11th save.

Jered Weaver (4-4) allowed four runs in six innings.

TWINS 6, MARINERS 5

SEATTLE (AP) — Miguel Sano hit a two-run homer in the first inning and drove in the go-ahead run with an RBI single in the seventh and the Minnesota Twins won their third straight.

Kevin Jepsen pitched the ninth for his fifth save despite Seattle having the tying run at third base with no outs. Jepsen got a shallow popout from Dae-Ho Lee that was not deep enough to score Shawn O'Malley from third. Seattle then ran itself into a game-ending double play with O'Malley getting caught off third base and Kyle Seager tagged out trying to advance to second.

Ryan Pressly (2-3) won in relief, while Nick Vincent (2-2) took the loss.

Eduardo Nunez and Joe Mauer both hit their fifth home runs for the Twins. Nori Aoki and Luis Sardinas each hit solo homers for Seattle.

DIAMONDBACKS 8, PADRES 7

PHOENIX (AP) — Paul Goldschmidt homered during a five-run second inning, Michael Bourn had three hits and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the San Diego Padres to end a four-game skid.

Goldschmidt also doubled and scored twice, and Bourn had a triple, a stolen base and two RBIs. Arizona knocked starter Cesar Vargas (0-3) out of the game in the second.

Zack Greinke (6-3) gave up a solo home run to Matt Kemp in the first, then held the Padres scoreless until the sixth. He allowed four runs on six hits and won for the fourth time in five starts, improving to 7-1 in 14 career starts against San Diego.

San Diego rallied for three runs off Brad Ziegler in the ninth, but Ziegler got a double play from Alexi Amarista to end it.

Loney, 32, was hitting .342 (54-158), with 22 runs scored, seven doubles, two home runs and 28 RBI in 43 games with El Paso (AAA) of the Pacific Coast League. He had .373 on-base percentage with San Diego's Triple-A affiliate. Tampa Bay released the lefthanded-hitter on April 3 and he signed with the Padres on April 8.

The 6-3, 235-pounder batted .280 (101-361) with 16 doubles, four home runs and 32 RBI in 104 games with Tampa Bay in 2015. He was the second-toughest player in the AL to strikeout at 11.41 plate appearances per strikeout (min. 300 plate appearances).

In 10 seasons in the majors, Loney has hit .285 (1,334-4,680) with 251 doubles, 20 triples, 99 home runs, 635 RBI and compiled a .338 on-base percentage with the Dodgers, Rays and Red Sox.

Baseball Capsules (May 28, 2016)

WASHINGTON (AP) — Stephen Piscotty hit a grand slam off Max Scherzer during a five-run third inning and Jaime Garcia quieted the Washington Nationals lineup as the St. Louis Cardinals won 6-2 on Friday night.

Coming off consecutive ineffective starts, Garcia (4-4) held Washington to two runs and seven hits over seven innings.

Scherzer (5-4) allowed two earned runs in each of his previous three starts including his 20-strikeout gem on May 11 in a victory over Detroit. That version didn't show early against St. Louis. He walked four batters and allowed five runs, all by the third inning.

Danny Espinosa's second home run in as many games broke up Garcia's shutout bid in the fifth. Bryce Harper went 1 for 4 after hitting the go-ahead home run in Washington's 2-1 series-opening win Thursday.

Greg Garcia homered for St. Louis.

METS 6, DODGERS 5

NEW YORK (AP) — Curtis Granderson homered leading off the bottom of the ninth to give New York the victory.

Chase Utley, who was booed all night in his return to Citi Field, hit a tying three-run double off Jeurys Familia with two outs in a four-run ninth inning for the Dodgers.

New York took a 3-0 lead in the first against Julio Urias and chased the 19-year-old after 2 2/3 innings in his major league debut.

But in a non-save situation, Familia (2-0) failed to hold a 5-1 lead.

New York moved back into the NL East lead, by percentage points over Washington.

ROYALS 7, WHITE SOX 5

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Eric Hosmer had three hits, including a home run, and drove in four runs as Kansas City rallied.

The White Sox used five pitchers in the Royals' four-run seventh with Matt Albers (1-4) taking the loss. The inning included Brett Eibner's double, his first major league hit, and Whit Merrifield's two-run single.

Royals starter Danny Duffy retired the first 16 batters he faced on 59 pitches before giving up five runs on his next 17 pitches.

Peter Moylan (2-0) picked up the victory with a scoreless seventh.

ANGELS 7, ASTROS 2

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Mike Trout had a three-run double and Albert Pujols hit a two-run homer in a big third inning to help the Los Angeles Angels beat the Houston Astros.

The home run was the 570th of Pujols' career, moving him past Rafael Palmeiro and alone into 12th on baseball's all-time list. Pujols is now three behind Harmon Killebrew for 11th.

Matt Shoemaker (3-5) struck out 11 without walking a batter, holding the Astros to seven hits, all singles. He left after allowing two hits with one out in the ninth. Cam Bedrosian gave up a two-run single to Colin Moran.

Right-hander Matt Fiers (3-3) took the loss.

PIRATES 9, RANGERS 1

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Jonathon Niese outpitched Cole Hamels with six strong innings, ending the Texas left-hander's career-best winning streak at 12 games in Pittsburgh's interleague victory.

Andrew McCutchen had one of four home runs for the Pirates, who won their fifth straight and spoiled Jeff Banister's first game against the organization he spent his first 29 years in pro baseball with before becoming Texas manager last season.

Hamels (5-1) gave up eight hits and six runs — five earned — in 4 2/3 innings, his shortest outing since the start before throwing a no-hitter in his final appearance for Philadelphia last July 25. He came to the Rangers in a trading deadline deal six days later.

Niese (5-2) threw five shutout innings before Adrian Beltre's leadoff homer in the sixth.

BLUE JAYS 7, RED SOX 5

TORONTO (AP) — Josh Donaldson hit two home runs and drove in five runs as Toronto snapped a five-game home losing streak.

The reigning AL MVP was 4 for 5, starting the scoring with a first-inning solo shot, and then providing the winning margin with a two-run drive, his 13th of the year in the eighth.

Justin Smoak added a solo shot in the fifth inning. Joe Biagini (2-1) got four outs and Roberto Osuna pitched the ninth for his 11th save.

Koji Uehara (2-2) worked the eighth inning for the Red Sox, allowing Ezequiel Carrera — starting for the suspended Jose Bautista — to reach on a bunt before surrendering the home run to Donaldson.

CUBS 6, PHILLIES 2

CHICAGO (AP) — Jorge Soler, David Ross and Kris Bryant hit long home runs to back Jon Lester and lead Chicago to a victory on a rainy afternoon.

The big drives helped the Cubs win their third straight after dropping eight of 12, and they came before two late delays — for 56 minutes in the top of the seventh inning and for 37 minutes at the start of the ninth.

Soler broke a 1-1 tie with his shot halfway up the video board in left leading off the fourth. Ross added a three-run homer off the Nuveen sign beyond the left-field bleachers in the inning to give the Cubs a 5-1 lead, and Bryant chased Adam Morgan (1-3) with a towering shot to start the fifth.

Lester (5-3) rebounded from his shortest start of the season by giving up two runs — one earned — and six hits while pitching into the seventh.

BRAVES 4, MARLINS 2

ATLANTA (AP) — Nick Markakis hit a tie-breaking, two-run single off third baseman Martin Prado's glove with two outs and the bases loaded in the eighth inning to give Atlanta a rare home win.

The Braves snapped a four-game losing streak and improved to only 3-20 in home games. They began the day tied with Minnesota for the majors' worst record.

Ian Krol (1-0) pitched a perfect eighth inning and Arodys Vizcaino pitched the ninth for his sixth save in seven chances.

Only an overturned call kept the eighth inning alive and made the decisive at-bat by Markakis possible.

His liner off David Phelps (3-3) was initially ruled an error on Prado before it was changed to a hit.

BREWERS 9, REDS 5

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Aaron Hill hit two solo homers, Jonathan Lucroy added a solo shot and drove in three runs, and Milwaukee outslugged Cincinnati, handing the Reds their 11th straight loss.

The Brewers chipped away at an early three-run deficit before surging ahead with a four-run fourth. Hill homered to left off John Lamb (0-3) to lead off the inning, and Lucroy capped the scoring with an RBI ground-rule double.

Hill's second homer came in the fifth off reliever Dayan Diaz for a three-run lead.

Hill and Jonathan Villar both had three hits, two runs and two RBIs to support starter Zach Davies (2-3).

YANKEES 4, RAYS 1

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Alex Rodriguez homered for the first time since coming off the disabled list and Masahiro Tanaka pitched seven shutout innings for New York.

Rodriguez returned Thursday after missing three weeks with a strained right hamstring. His sixth homer of the season and 693rd overall came off Chris Archer during a three-run sixth.

Tanaka (3-0) scattered two hits and struck out four to run his career-best unbeaten streak to 11 consecutive starts, dating to last season.

Kirby Yates allowed Steve Pearce's two-out solo homer in the ninth before Aroldis Chapman got the final out.

Carlos Beltran homered in the eighth for the Yankees.

Archer (3-6) allowed four runs — one earned — and four hits in eight innings for the Rays.

ORIOLES 6, INDIANS 4

CLEVELAND (AP) — Chris Davis' RBI double broke a seventh-inning tie, Manny Machado went 4 for 5 and Baltimore Orioles ended a four-game losing streak.

Mark Trumbo followed Davis' clutch hit with a two-run homer, his AL-leading 15th of the season, and a lineup tweak by Orioles manager Buck Showalter woke up a slumbering offense that scored nine runs in its losing streak.

Dylan Bundy (1-1) pitched 1 1/3 innings for his first major league win. Zach Britton pitched a perfect ninth for 13th save.

Cleveland scored in the second, fourth and fifth to tie the game, but Machado doubled off Zach McAllister (2-2).

ROCKIES 5, GIANTS 2

DENVER (AP) — Tyler Chatwood threw seven masterful innings, Charlie Blackmon had one of Colorado's three run-scoring doubles and the Rockies beat San Francisco to end the Giants' 10-game winning streak against NL West teams.

It was San Francisco's longest streak versus the division since capturing 10 straight in August 1982.

Nolan Arenado and Trevor Story had RBI doubles in a game that was delayed 42 minutes at the start by weather.

San Francisco starter Matt Cain left in the second inning with a strained right hamstring. He was replaced by Albert Suarez (1-1), who took a grounder off the left leg in the third but stayed in the game.

Chatwood (6-3) found success at Coors Field after being so dominant on the road. He scattered four hits, walked none and allowed one unearned run.

PADRES 10, DIAMONDBACKS 3

PHOENIX (AP) — Yangervis Solarte homered from both sides of the plate and the San Diego Padres used 18 hits to rout the Arizona Diamondbacks and snap a four-game losing streak.

Matt Kemp and Derek Norris each hit a home run and drove in three, and Wil Myers added an RBI double for the Padres, who won for just the third time in their past 11 games.

Christian Friedrich (1-1) threw seven shutout innings, allowing three hits with five strikeouts and a walk for San Diego.

Arizona starter Robbie Ray (2-4) lasted only 4 2/3 innings, allowing five runs and nine hits with two walks and eight strikeouts. Brandon Drury and Jake Lamb homered for Arizona, which has dropped four straight.

TIGERS 4, ATHLETICS 1

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Nick Castellanos homered and Cameron Maybin doubled in a run, giving rookie Michael Fulmer more than enough support in the Detroit Tigers' victory over the Oakland Athletics.

James McCann and J.D. Martinez also drove in runs for the Tigers, who have won nine of 11. Ian Kinsler was a home run shy of the cycle.

Fulmer (4-1) retired 14 of the first 15 batters he faced, with Khris Davis' single with two outs in the second inning the only smudge of an otherwise dominating performance. He gave up three hits over 7 2/3 innings, walking one and striking out three.

A's starter Sean Manaea (1-3) gave up three runs on nine hits in six-plus innings.

TWINS 7, MARINERS 2

SEATTLE (AP) — Robbie Grossman's bases-loaded double keyed a five-run third inning and Pat Dean pitched effectively for seven innings for his first major league victory to pace the Minnesota Twins past the Seattle Mariners.

Dean (1-1) allowed two runs on four hits and struck out eight and walked none in his second start and fourth appearance since being called up May 11.

Seattle ace Felix Hernandez (4-4), who entered with a 2.21 ERA, was tagged for six runs on eight hits in six innings.

Miguel Sano and Joe Mauer each had solo homers for the Twins, while Franklin Gutierrez homered for Seattle in the first innings.

Baseball Capsules (May 27, 2016)

NEW YORK (AP) — J.A. Happ pitched seven strong innings, Edwin Encarnacion and Devon Travis had two-out RBIs, and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Yankees 3-1 on Thursday to win the three-game series.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Bryce Harper hit a slump-busting home run, Danny Espinosa also went deep and Washington got seven strong innings from right-hander Joe Ross.

Washington trailed 1-0 in the sixth inning before Harper ended a 4-for-33 skid with a no-doubt-about-it shot into the upper deck, far beyond the wall in right field. It was his 12th homer of the season, the first since May 13.

The light-hitting Espinosa snapped the tie in the seventh with a drive to right. Batting eighth, Espinosa came in with a .199 batting average and three home runs.

Both homers came off Mike Leake (3-4), who won his previous three starts while allowing only two runs over 21 innings.

Ross (4-4) gave up one run and six hits over seven innings.

Jon Gray (2-2) gave up a two-run home run to David Ortiz in the first, but pitched six scoreless innings before leaving in the eighth.

Clay Buchholz (2-5) took the loss. He pitched three perfect innings before things came apart in the fourth, when he gave up Gonzalez's homer with the other two coming the following inning.
