Greinke solid, D'backs beat Cueto and Giants 4-3

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Even when he lacks his best stuff, Diamondbacks ace Zack Greinke usually has enough to beat the Giants.

On Tuesday night, one big inning from his Arizona teammates helped, too.

Greinke threw six solid innings to continue his mastery of San Francisco and the Diamondbacks beat Johnny Cueto and the Giants 4-3.

"He just sucked it up and was able to get us through six," Diamondbacks manager Chip Hale said. "It was almost like he was trying to make perfect pitches. The last couple innings he went back to just working down in the zone and getting early count outs."

Greinke (12-4) allowed two runs — one earned — and six hits to earn his ninth win in 13 career starts against San Francisco and his first overall since Aug. 9.

Arizona's ace also improved to 4-0 with a 1.66 ERA in six starts at AT&T Park.

"I think the first time I pitched here I gave up five runs," Greinke said. "It's a good place to pitch obviously. I felt I was making good pitches all game. I couldn't strike anyone out but I was getting weak contact so it was fine."

Welington Castillo hit a two-run single to cap a four-run fifth that chased Cueto, while A.J. Pollock singled twice and reached four times to help the Diamondbacks end a four-game losing streak to their division rival.

Daniel Hudson gave up an RBI single to Angel Pagan in the ninth but retired three batters for his second save.

The loss keeps the Giants 1 1/2 games behind the first-place Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West.

Cueto (14-5) pitched well early but failed to make it out of the fifth for the first time this season. He allowed four runs, walked four and struck out five.

"I think the pitches caught up with him," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "His command was a little off, he started missing his spots. It just got away from him."

Pagan and Hunter Pence had three hits apiece for San Francisco.

In the fifth, Chris Owings hit an RBI triple, and after Cueto walked Greinke, Jean Segura singled in Owings. Two batters later, Castillo's two-run single gave Arizona a 4-1 lead and ended Cueto's night.

"Once we got something going we kept it going," Hale said.

Brandon Crawford drove in San Francisco's first run with a sacrifice fly in the third.

Pence and Joe Panik hit back-to-back doubles in the sixth to make it 4-2.

DEFENSIVE GEM

The Diamondbacks preserved the win by turning double plays in the seventh and eighth innings. Second baseman Segura started the inning-ender in the eighth when he fielded Panik's grounder near second base and flipped the ball out of his glove to shortstop Owings, who threw to first to complete the double play.

CUETO'S SLUMP CONTINUES

Cueto dominated the first half but has struggled since. The NL's starting pitcher in the All-Star game has just one win in nine starts since the break.

TRAINER'S ROOM

Diamondbacks: Chris Herrmann (strained left hamstring) continues to rehab with Triple-A Reno and Hale is confident the catcher will rejoin the big league club soon.

Giants: Span left the game with a stiff neck in the seventh. ... Pence had missed the last three games with a strained right hamstring. ... Jake Peavy received a cortisone shot to alleviate some of the pain in his lower back.

UP NEXT

Diamondbacks: RHP Shelby Miller (2-9) will be called up from Reno to make his 15th start of the season Wednesday in the second half of this two-game series. Miller hasn't pitched in the majors since July 6 and his 7.14 ERA is nearly double that of any previous season.

Giants: LHP Matt Moore (8-10) pitches the finale for San Francisco. Moore lost his bid for a no-hitter with one out in the ninth inning against the Dodgers in his most recent start.

Anderson, Rockies top Dodgers to open doubleheader

DENVER (AP) — Tyler Anderson warmed up and took the mound for his start on Tuesday. A rain storm, postponement and restless night's sleep later, he returned to the hill.

This outing was well worth the wait.

The left-hander pitched efficiently into the seventh inning, Nolan Arenado kept up his torrid August with another RBI and the Colorado Rockies beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 7-0 in the opener of a doubleheader Wednesday.

Anderson (5-5), with his deceiving motion, allowed six hits in 6 1/3 innings against the NL West leaders. He also helped his own cause with an RBI single in the second in the team's first shutout at home this season.

"It was nice," Anderson said. "Tiring, but it was good."

Anderson actually tossed a few warmup pitches Tuesday before the first inning. But a relentless downpour blanketed the area, leading to a postponement after a delay of 2 hours, 32 minutes. He tried to stay loose by lightly throwing and riding the stationary bike. That's why he was losing steam late in the game.

"Anderson gave us everything he had," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said. "When you have a doubleheader, you want to get every out from your starter you can. He did a great job."

Arenado had a run-scoring double in the first, giving him 34 RBIs this month. It's the most for August in Rockies history, passing the mark of 33 set by Andres Galarraga in 1996.

Ross Stripling (3-6) surrendered three runs over six innings.

"Ross pitched well enough for us to win and you know left-handed pitching has been our Achilles heel," Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. "Our situational at-bats need to get better."

Colorado has taken the first two games in the series from the Dodgers. This is the fifth series the Rockies have captured from a first-place team in August. They're the only team in the majors with a positive run differential (plus-26) and a losing mark (64-68).

Pinch-hitter Stephen Cardullo hit his first career homer in the seventh — on his birthday, no less. The 29-year-old Cardullo spent the last few seasons playing for an independent team in New York before signing a minor league contract with Colorado in January. He joined the Rockies last week after hitting .308 with 17 homers for Triple-A Albuquerque.

"What a special feeling," said Cardullo, who got the ball from the fan who caught it.

Anderson's quirky delivery gave the Dodgers fits all afternoon. He briefly pauses before throwing to the plate.

The 2011 first-round pick wiggled his way out of a sticky situation in the sixth when he had runners on first and third and one out. He struck out Adrian Gonzalez — the top daytime hitter in the majors this season — and then fanned Rob Segedin with a changeup.

Anderson trotted back out for the seventh, and left to an ovation with one out and two on. Chris Rusin bailed him out by striking out pinch-hitter Yasmani Grandal and Howie Kendrick.

TRAINER'S ROOM

Dodgers: LHP Clayton Kershaw (mild disk irritation) had a successful outing in a simulated game Tuesday and now is in a momentary holding pattern. "We haven't made the decision as far as what his next progression will be," Roberts said. ... LHP Scott Kazmir (neck stiffness) will be slotted into the rotation when he's eligible to come off the DL on Sept. 7.

Rockies: 1B Mark Reynolds (broken bone in left hand) was activated off the 15-day disabled list and entered as a defensive replacement in the seventh. To make room, INF Daniel Descalso was put on the paternity list. ... RHP Tyler Chatwood (back strain) will start Saturday.

EXPANDED ROSTERS

Roberts gave an early glimpse of his plans for September call-ups. The Dodgers will add catcher Austin Barnes, righty Louis Coleman, lefty Luis Avilan — who will serve as the 26th man Wednesday for the second game — and righty Josh Ravin. Missing from that list is outfielder Yasiel Puig, who was demoted to the minors in early August.

"With Yasiel, that's still a possibility, but we're trying to figure out what's best for him and what's best for us," Roberts said.

UP NEXT

The Dodgers scratched lefty Rich Hill (10-3) from the start in Game 2, going with righty Bud Norris instead. The team was concerned about a blister on his left middle finger. Colorado went with righty Jeff Hoffman (0-2).

Astros rally after wild pitch on strikeout, beat Athletics

HOUSTON (AP) — Evan Gattis hit an RBI single to cap a three-run rally in the eighth inning keyed by a wild pitch on a strikeout, leading the Houston Astros over the Oakland Athletics 4-3 Wednesday.

The Astros began the day two games behind Baltimore for the second AL wild-card slot. Houston swept the three-game series and next opens a three-game set at AL West-leading Texas.

A's starter Ross Detwiler gave up three hits and left after the seventh with a 3-1 lead.

Reliever Liam Hendriks (0-3) got two quick outs in the eighth before George Springer tripled. Alex Bregman then struck out, but reached when the pitch got away, allowing Springer to score.

Jose Altuve tripled home the tying run and Gattis singled for the lead.

Michael Feliz (8-1) pitched a scoreless eighth. Ken Giles closed for his seventh save.

The Athletics have lost 12 of their last 18 games.

Detwiler had given up 14 runs and 23 hits in his previous three starts. He shut down Houston, striking out seven. Carlos Correa hit an RBI double for the only run off Detwiler.

The A's got all three of their runs in the second off Mike Fiers. Jake Smolinski hit a two-run triple and Bruce Maxwell had a sacrifice fly.

After trading outfielder Coco Crisp to Cleveland earlier in the day, the A's called up Joey Wendle from Triple-A. In his major league debut, he went 0 for 4 and scored a run.

TRAINER'S ROOM

Athletics: LHP Sean Manaea (sore back) will miss his next scheduled start on Sunday. He left his start last Monday vs. Houston in the fourth inning. Kendall Graveman, who allowed three runs in seven innings in a loss to the Astros on Tuesday night, will start in place of Manaea.

Astros: INF Marwin Gonzalez left with discomfort in his right hamstring. In the bottom of the fifth, he hit a flyball onto Tal's Hill in deep center field and started limping after rounding first. He was replaced by A.J. Reed in the top of the sixth. Gonzalez missed several games four weeks ago with right hamstring soreness.

UP NEXT

Athletics: RHP Andrew Triggs (1-1, 4.39 ERA) starts Friday night at home against Boston. He picked up his first career win in his last start, allowing four hits and three runs while striking out eight in six innings against St. Louis.

Astros: LHP Dallas Keuchel (9-12, 4.55 ERA) starts at Texas on Friday night. He is going for his third straight win but has struggled against the Rangers this season, going 1-3 with a 5.40 ERA in four starts.

Odor homers twice, Gomez hits slam as Rangers rout Mariners

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Rougned Odor homered twice a day after hitting a game-ending shot and Carlos Gomez connected for a grand slam off Felix Hernandez, sending the Texas Rangers to a 14-1 romp over the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday for a three-game sweep.

Odor tied a career high with five RBIs and Adrian Beltre and Ryan Rua also homered for the AL West leaders. Texas (80-54) moved a season-high 26 games over .500 with a fifth straight win and gave Seattle its fifth loss in a row.

The Rangers matched the 1999 and 2012 Texas teams as the fastest to reach 80 wins.

Odor had a two-run shot for a 10-0 lead in the seventh and a three-run homer in the eighth, and leads the team with 27 home runs. On Tuesday night, his two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth gave Texas an 8-7 win.

Martin Perez (9-10) pitched six shutout innings despite giving up seven hits and three walks.

Hernandez (9-5) matched a season high by allowing six runs in his shortest outing, coming out after four innings in his first loss since May 27.

Gomez hit a soaring fly ball about a dozen rows above the 14-foot wall in left field for his second grand slam this season and a 6-0 lead in the fourth. The other slam also was against Seattle on July 17 when he was still with Houston.

Gomez has three hits in two games since ending a 0-for-18 skid following a homer in his first at-bat for Texas after his release by the Astros. He has seven homers this season.

Beltre's 25th homer of the season was a two-run shot in the fifth.

TRAINER'S ROOM

Mariners: DH Nelson Cruz missed his second straight game with a nerve issue in his left hand that affects his grip on the bat. Manager Scott Servais said he was responding to medication and should be in the lineup Friday against the Los Angeles Angels. The Mariners are off Thursday. ... Servais said he expects LHP James Paxton to make his next start after he ripped a fingernail Tuesday.

UP NEXT

Both teams are off Thursday. Seattle LHP Ariel Miranda (1-1, 4.98 ERA) will open a home series against the Angels on Friday night. Texas RHP A.J. Griffin (6-3, 4.39) gets the opener of a home series against Houston.

Two mistakes costly in Rays' 8-6 loss to Boston

BOSTON (AP) — One bad pitch and a baserunning blunder had the Tampa Bay Rays doing a lot of second guessing.

Mired in the AL East basement, the Rays blew an early three-run lead — that could have been more if Tim Beckham hustled home — when Boston's Hanley Ramirez hit a grand slam. Aaron Hill later sliced an RBI single to break an eighth-inning tie on Wednesday, helping the Red Sox beat the Rays 8-6.

"Difficult loss. We get out to an early lead, have some real good at-bats against a good pitcher that's having a good year," Rays manager Kevin Cash said. "A walk here and couple of hits, then the big home run by Hanley really killed us."

The Rays opened a 4-1 lead in the fourth on Kevin Kiermaier's RBI single, but he was cut down trying to stretch to a double and Beckham didn't hustle to the plate, nullifying another run.

"Definitely the not hustling," Cash said. "That's required of us and probably the easiest part to do in baseball."

Kiermaier had three hits for the Rays, and Logan Forsythe and Logan Morrison each homered in the first four innings against Steven Wright.

Boston took the lead in the fifth after Drew Smyly loaded the bases on two hits and a two-out walk.

Ramirez hit the next pitch over the Green Monster for his 19th homer of the season.

Smyly was keeping Boston's hitters off stride for most the early innings with good off-speed pitches, but elected to try a fastball against Ramirez.

"In my mind I was thinking: 'Be careful,'" Smyly said. "He jumps on the first pitch. It definitely makes you second guess the pitch selection. I threw it and left it over the middle. I was convicted to throwing it, it just leaked back over the middle."

Jackie Bradley Jr., who had three hits, and Xander Bogaerts each homered for the Red Sox. Dustin Pedroia had three more hits for Boston, which had lost five of its previous seven games after moving into a tie for first place in the AL East.

Pedroia has 15 hits in his last 20 at-bats and is batting .463 since moving into the leadoff spot on Aug. 10.

Junichi Tazawa (3-2) earned the victory despite allowing a two-run single after Boston took a 6-4 lead on the homers by Ramirez and Bradley. Craig Kimbrel closed for his 24th save.

Erasmo Ramirez (7-10) gave up Hill's single and an RBI double by Bradley in the eighth.

TRAINER'S ROOM

Red Sox: RP Brad Ziegler was unavailable with the flu. Manager John Farrell said he would fly on his own to the West Coast "to keep him away from others ... being so contagious."

STILL TRYING

The Rays finished August at 14-15 and haven't had a winning month since last August.

ROAD WOES

Tampa Bay is 0-5-1 in its last six road series.

UP NEXT

Rays: Off Thursday, home against Toronto on Friday with Alex Cobb making his 2016 debut against Francisco Liriano (7-12).

Red Sox: Off Thursday, at Oakland on Friday with David Price (13-9) against Andrew Triggs (1-1).

The right-hander was signed as a non-drafted free-agent on July 2, 2014 by Mariners scouts Eddy Toledo and Tim Kissner.

Orozco, 19, was 2-2 with a 4.07 ERA (22 ER, 48.2 IP) with 63 strikeouts in 12 games, including 5 starts with the AZL Mariners this season. The right-hander was a Mariners 14th round selection in the 2015 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Salpointe Catholic (AZ) High school.

Jones, Tigers rally past White Sox, complete sweep

DETROIT (AP) – JaCoby Jones doubled twice in his second major league game, then dashed home for the winning run on a sacrifice fly by Tyler Collins in the ninth inning to lift the Detroit Tigers over the Chicago White Sox 3-2 on Wednesday.

After a day after doubling, singling and driving in two runs in his debut, Jones scored twice to help the Tigers complete a three-game sweep.

Jones hit a leadoff double in the ninth against David Robertson (4-3) and advanced to third on Jarrod Saltalamacchia's deep flyball.

Collins came up as a pinch-hitter and was able to lift the ball to left-center. Avisail Garcia made the catch, but his throw bounced before it even reached the mound.

Francisco Rodriguez (2-3) pitched the ninth.

Jose Abreu and Alex Avila homered on consecutive pitches in the fourth for the White Sox.

White Sox ace Chris Sale allowed two runs and eight hits in eight innings against a Detroit lineup that was without Miguel Cabrera. The slugging first baseman sat out because his right ankle had been acting up.

Chicago was without Melky Cabrera, who missed the game because of stomach discomfort.

Justin Verlander allowed two runs and three hits in seven innings for the Tigers, striking out nine.

Verlander retired the first eight hitters he faced, striking out six of them. With two outs in the fourth, Abreu connected for his 19th homer of the year. Avila followed with a drive to the bushes beyond the wall in center, giving Chicago a 2-0 lead against his former team.

Verlander did not allow another baserunner after Avila's home run. Detroit scored a run on Andrew Romine's single in the fifth, and J.D. Martinez tied it with a two-out RBI single in the eighth.

Jose Reyes dashed home to score the tying run in the eighth on a dangerous collision at the plate. Two innings later, Cespedes, who sat out Sunday's loss to Philadelphia after his nagging right quadriceps flared up, launched a no-doubt drive to left-center on a 1-1 pitch from Nick Wittgren (4-3).

The Mets pulled even with Miami for second place in the NL East. With its seventh victory in nine games, New York remained 2 1/2 games behind St. Louis for the league's second wild card.

Rookie left-hander Josh Smoker (1-0) struck out two in a perfect inning for his first major league win.

Abraham Almonte pushed a bunt past Kintzler and beat the throw to first to start the inning. Gimenez fouled off two bunt attempts before poking a single through the right side with Almonte moving to second.

Third baseman Miguel Sano fielded Rajai Davis' slow roller. Third base umpire Ron Kupla ruled Sano tagged Almonte and the call was upheld after a Cleveland challenge.

Kipnis then hit the second pitch from Kinztler for the game-winner.

Zach McAllister (3-2) worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the 10th, retiring Max Kepler on a fly ball to end the inning.

The victory gave the Angels back-to-back road series wins for the first time this season.

Marte hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning off Anibal Sanchez (7-13). It was Marte's 10th home run of the season and first since Aug. 17. He played in 33 games with the Tigers last season.

The Angels added three more runs in the sixth, on sacrifice flies by Andrelton Simmons and Marte, plus an RBI double by Nick Buss. Skaggs (2-3) allowed two hits while striking out six in six innings.

HOUSTON (AP) — Chris Archer struck out 10 in seven innings, Corey Dickerson hit a three-run homer and Tampa Bay beat Houston.

Matt Duffy and Nick Franklin also went deep for the last-place Rays. They have homered in 21 of their last 24 games. Houston, in the hunt for an AL wild card, had won three straight.

Archer (8-17) gave up three runs on four hits and two walks. With his strikeout of A.J. Reed in the sixth, the right-hander joined David Price and James Shields as the only Tampa Bay pitchers with multiple 200-strikeout seasons.

Franklin and Evan Longoria each had three hits for the Rays, who jumped out early against Doug Fister (12-9). Jose Altuve hammered for Houston.

Robinson Cano hit a solo homer, his 30th, and Kyle Seager had three hits for Seattle.

Chris Beck and Dan Jennings worked out a jam in the seventh, Nate Jones pitched a 1-2-3 eighth and David Robertson got the last three outs for his 33rd save.

PHOENIX (AP) — Yasmany Tomas homered, Welington Castillo drove in four runs and Archie Bradley won for the first time in more than a month in Arizona's victory over Cincinnati.

Tomas delivered a pinch-hit three-run shot in the sixth inning off Reds reliever Ross Ohlendorf, his team-leading 27th of the season. Castillo had two hits, a run-scoring single in the fifth and an RBI double in the eighth, and knocked in runs with a fielder's choice grounder and a sacrifice fly.

Bradley (5-8) allowed two runs and five hits with three strikeouts over six innings.

The Diamondbacks scored four runs in the first off Reds starter Homer Bailey (2-3), all on singles, force outs and an error.

PIRATES 3, BREWERS 1
