Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced today that the club has acquired outfielder Ben Gamel from New York (AL) in exchange for right-handed pitchers Jio Orozco and Juan De Paula.
Gamel will be added to the Major League roster on Friday, after rosters expand.
The Mariners 40-man roster is now full.
Gamel, 24, hit .308 (149x483) with 80 runs, 26 doubles, 5 triples, 6 home runs, 51 RBI and 19 stolen bases in 116 games with AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in the Yankees organization this season. He was named International League Most Valuable Player on Tuesday (Aug. 30) and among International League leaders, ranks 1st in runs (80), 3rd in hits (149), 5th in stolen bases (19), 6th in batting (.308) and 9th in total bases (203). Gamel is batting .314 (48x153) vs. left-handed pitchers with 11 doubles, 3 home runs and 16 RBI.
The left-handed hitting outfielder made his Major League debut earlier this season with the Yankees as a defensive replacement (right field) on May 6 vs. Boston. In 6 games with New York this season, Gamel was 1-for-8 (.125) with 1 run, 1 walk and 1 strikeout.
In 2015, Gamel was named Rookie of the Year for the International League after batting .300 (150x500) with 77 runs, 28 doubles, 14 triples, 10 home runs, 64 RBI and 13 stolen bases in 129 games with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. A native of Neptune Beach, Florida, Gamel was selected by the Yankees in the 10th round of the 2010 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Bishop Kenny High School (Jacksonville, Fla.).
De Paula, 18, was 1-2 with a 3.07 ERA (14 ER, 41.0 IP) with 53 strikeouts in 11 games including 7 starts with the AZL Mariners this season. In two minor league seasons in the Mariners organization, he is 6-6 with a 2.58 ERA (34 ER, 118.2 IP) with 121 strikeouts in 25 games, including 21 starts. The right-hander was signed as a non-drafted free-agent on July 2, 2014 by Mariners scouts Eddy Toledo and Tim Kissner.
Orozco, 19, was 2-2 with a 4.07 ERA (22 ER, 48.2 IP) with 63 strikeouts in 12 games, including 5 starts with the AZL Mariners this season. In two minor league seasons in the Mariners organization, he is 5-3 with a 3.73 ERA (29 ER, 70.0 IP) with 87 strikeouts in 20 games, including 8 starts. The right-hander was a Mariners 14th round selection in the 2015 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Salpointe Catholic (AZ) High school.
