Lowrie to DL with shin injury; A's recall Surkamp

Statement from the Athletics website.

The A's placed second baseman Jed Lowrie on the 15-day disabled list with a right shin contusion on Wednesday, part of a series of roster moves made before Oakland's game against the Red Sox at Fenway Park.

In Monday's series opener, Lowrie fouled a ball off his foot, which forced him out of the game in the seventh inning. He underwent X-rays following the game, and they came back negative. The 32-year-old was batting .302 with 17 RBIs this season.

The A's also recalled left-hander Eric Surkamp from Triple-A Nashville to spot start Wednesday's game, and they selected the contract of right-hander Zach Neal.

To make room on the roster, Oakland optioned left-hander Daniel Coulombe to Triple-A and transferred infielder Eric Sogard to the 60-day DL.
