RHP Nathan Karns placed on 15-day disabled list

Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced that the club has recalled right-handed pitcher Cody Martin from AAA Tacoma, and placed right-handed pitcher Nathan Karns on the 15-day disabled list with a low back strain.

Martin, 26, was 9-6 with a 3.95 ERA (43 ER, 98.0 IP) with 96 strikeouts and 30 walks in 22 games (17 starts) with AAA Tacoma. In one prior stint with Seattle this season, he was 1-0 with a 2.25 ERA (1 ER, 4.0 IP) with 2 strikeouts and 1 walk in 2 games with the Mariners this season. Martin earned the win in his Mariners debut, tossing 1.0 scoreless inning while allowing 1 hit on June 2 at San Diego. Seattle originally claimed Martin off waivers from Oakland on Oct. 29, 2015.

Karns, 28, is 6-2 with a 5.15 ERA (54 ER, 94.1 IP) with 101 strikeouts and 45 walks in 22 games (15 starts) with the Mariners this season. Karns was 6-2 with a 4.56 ERA (41 ER, 81.0 IP) in 15 starts. Since moving to the bullpen, Karns has recorded 1 save while posting an 8.78 ERA (13 ER, 13.1 IP) with 17 strikeouts and 7 walks in 7 appearances.
