Baseball Capsules (June 15, 2016)

WASHINGTON (AP) — Albert Almora Jr. drove in the go-ahead run with a ninth-inning double, Dexter Fowler had two hits and the Chicago Cubs beat the Washington Nationals 4-3 on Tuesday night.

Addison Russell led off the ninth with a walk from Sammy Solis (1-2) and was sacrificed to second before Almora, who entered the game in the eighth inning, lined a shot to left center.

Jason Heyward provided a two-run single for Chicago, which evened the three-game series between division leaders.

Washington, which had won four straight, tied it in the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Anthony Rendon off closer Hector Rondon.

Rondon (1-1) pitched the final 1 2/3 innings for the win.

PIRATES 4, METS 0

NEW YORK (AP) — Jameson Taillon took a no-hit bid into the seventh inning of his second major league start, dominating New York while pitching Pittsburgh to a victory that snapped a five-game losing streak.

Jung Ho Kang and Starling Marte each hit a two-run homer for the Pirates, backing eight efficient innings of two-hit ball from an impressive Taillon. One of baseball's top pitching prospects, the sturdy right-hander held New York hitless until Curtis Granderson grounded a leadoff single in the seventh, squeezing it through the shift between two diving infielders on the outfield grass.

Taillon (1-0) was recalled from the minors before the game when Pittsburgh put ace Gerrit Cole on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right triceps. The touted rookie certainly showed what all the fuss is about, outpitching All-Star Jacob deGrom (3-3) in a rematch with the defending NL champions.

ORIOLES 3, RED SOX 2

BOSTON (AP) — Manny Machado hit a two-run home run, Chris Tillman struck out seven and Baltimore snapped a three-game losing streak with a victory over Boston.

The teams entered the three-game series tied atop the American League East. Baltimore has won five of the eight meetings with Boston this season.

Tillman (9-1) went seven innings to get the victory. He kept the Red Sox lineup off balance with an assortment of fastballs, sliders and curves. His lone mistake was a home run in the seventh to Jackie Bradley, Jr.

Zach Britton earned his 20th save in 20 tries.

David Price (7-4) took the loss, despite finishing with 11 strikeouts in eight innings and retiring 19 straight at one point.

GIANTS 3, BREWERS 2

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Madison Bumgarner struck out eight over eight innings to win his career-best seventh straight decision, Buster Posey had season-high four hits and San Francisco beat Milwaukee for its fourth straight victory.

Bumgarner (8-2) allowed four hits and two runs in a 113-pitch performance. His seven-game winning streak spanning 10 starts since an April 20 loss to Arizona is the longest by a Giants pitcher since Barry Zito's seven consecutive victories Aug. 7-Oct. 2, 2012.

Angel Pagan returned from the disabled list with a hamstring injury and scored the go-ahead run in the seventh on a second wild pitch of the inning by loser Will Smith (1-1).

Bumgarner retired the first nine batters before Villar's single up the middle leading off the fourth.

RANGERS 10, ATHLETICS 6

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Elvis Andrus, Ryan Rua and Robinson Chirinos homered to lead Texas over Oakland.

Martin Perez (6-4) retired 14 of 15 batters before allowing three straight one-out hits in Oakland's three-run sixth.

Khris Davis led Oakland with two hits and two RBIs and Yonder Alonso added a two-run double in the ninth.

Eric Surkamp (0-4), called up from the minors for a fourth time, allowed seven runs, seven hits and two walks in 2 1/3 innings.

ASTROS 5, CARDINALS 2

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Doug Fister pitched effectively into the eighth inning and gave Houston breathing room with a two-run single in a victory over St. Louis.

Colby Rasmus hit his 150th career homer in his first game back in St. Louis since 2011. Fister had been 0 for 2 on the season before hitting the first pitch from reliever Seung Hwan Oh up the middle to put the Astros up by three in the seventh.

Matt Adams and Brandon Moss homered for the Cardinals, whose season-best five-game winning streak ended.

Fister (7-3) allowed two runs and five hits in 7 1/3 innings, his longest outing of the season, to win his sixth consecutive decision.

RAYS 8, MARINERS 7

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Evan Longoria and Corey Dickerson had three RBIs apiece and Tampa Bay rallied from an early four-run deficit to beat Seattle.

Longoria's seventh homer in his last 10 games, a three-run shot off Nick Vincent, tied it at 7 in the seventh. Mike Montgomery (2-2) entered and walked two straight before Dickerson's RBI single put Tampa Bay ahead 8-7.

Ryan Garton (1-0) got the final two outs in the seventh for his first major league win. Alex Colome worked the ninth to get his 19th save in as many chances.

Mariners starter Taijuan Walker left with one out in the fourth after aggravating his right Achilles tendon. No other details were immediately available about the injury.

ROYALS 3, INDIANS 2

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Salvador Perez hit a two-run homer with two outs in the eighth inning, and Kansas City held on through a shaky ninth to beat Cleveland.

Joakim Soria (3-2) pitched a scoreless eighth inning for Kansas City, then proceeded to handle the ninth with setup man Kelvin Herrera and closer Wade Davis resting after having each pitched the last three days.

Unable to solve Josh Tomlin most of the night, the Royals finally took the lead off Bryan Shaw (0-3), who gave up a single to Eric Hosmer before Perez deposited a pitch 402 feet away in left field.

TIGERS 11, WHITE SOX 8

CHICAGO (AP) — Justin Upton doubled, tripled and drove in four runs; J.D. Martinez had three of Detroit's season-high seven doubles and the Tigers this time held on to a big lead and beat skidding Chicago.

After blowing a 7-0 lead in a 12-inning loss a night earlier, the Tigers raced to a 10-2 edge in the fourth and overcame a second straight subpar start by Jordan Zimmermann (9-3) for their eighth win in 10 games.

Miguel Gonzalez (1-2) needed 91 pitches to get 10 outs, allowing seven runs and eight hits in Chicago's 23rd loss in 32 games.

DODGERS 7, DIAMONDBACKS 4

PHOENIX (AP) — Chase Utley homered and had four RBIs, Joc Pederson hit two homers and the Los Angeles Dodgers overcame Kenta Maeda's right leg injury to beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 7-4 on Tuesday night.

Maeda (6-4) pitched into the sixth inning before a line drive by Paul Goldschmidt hit him below the knee. The Dodgers said the rookie right-hander suffered a contusion and X-rays were negative.

Pederson hit solo homers off Archie Bradley (2-3) and Justin Turner added another. Utley hit a two-run homer in the seventh inning and Kenley Jansen struck out the side in the ninth for his 18th save.

That was enough to help end the Dodgers' three-game losing streak, but their bigger concern was Maeda's painful injury.

Jean Segura had four hits and scored two runs for Arizona.

ROCKIES 13, YANKEES 10

DENVER (AP) — Carlos Gonzalez homered among his four hits, Trevor Story also went deep and drove in three runs and Colorado beat New York.

Jorge De La Rosa (3-4) scattered three hits to get his first win as a starter in two months. Carlos Estevez worked the ninth for his second save.

Nathan Eovaldi (6-3) gave up six runs and eight hits while striking out just two in four-plus innings.

The Yankees used a seven-run eighth to pull to 12-10, but Gonzalez led off the bottom of the eighth with his 15th homer.

BLUE JAYS 11, PHILLIES 3

TORONTO (AP) — Josh Donaldson hit a grand slam and finished with five RBIs, Edwin Encarnacion hit a two-run homer and Toronto routed Philadelphia.

Toronto roughed up Phillies rookie Zach Eflin (0-1) in his major league debut to win for the 11th time in 14 meetings with Philadelphia.

Marcus Stroman (6-2) allowed two runs and six hits in seven innings to win for the first time in four starts.

ANGELS 5, TWINS 4

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Johnny Giavotella hit a two-run homer, Kole Calhoun added a solo shot and doubled in another run and Los Angeles beat Minnesota.

Five Angels relievers held the Twins scoreless over the last four innings to secure the victory for Jhoulys Chacin (3-4). Huston Street pitched a perfect ninth for his seventh save.

The Angels took a 3-1 lead on Giavotella's fourth of the season in the third inning off ex-Angel Ervin Santana (1-7).

MARLINS 5, PADRES 2

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Jeff Mathis hit a grand slam, Tom Koehler pitched six quality innings and Miami beat San Diego.

Mathis hit his first homer of the year in the first inning, when Miami scored all of its runs off Drew Pomeranz (5-7).

Koehler (5-6) won for the third time in four decisions. He allowed two runs on six hits and a walk and struck out eight.

REDS 3, BRAVES 1

ATLANTA (AP) — Jay Bruce had a three-run homer in the first, Brandon Finnegan pitched six strong innings and surging Cincinnati escaped a jam in the ninth to beat weak-hitting Atlanta.

Finnegan (3-4) allowed one run and four hits with three walks.

Julio Teheran (2-7) allowed three runs and three hits with one walk and eight strikeouts for Atlanta.
