Mets sign SS Jose Reyes to minor-league contract

"The Line Drive" Staff Report
Jose Reyes
NEW YORK – The New York Mets officially signed SS Jose Reyes to a minor-league contract on Saturday. Reyes will report to the Brooklyn Cyclones.

The Mets originally signed Reyes in 1999.

Reyes was arrested on Oct. 31 after a physical altercation with his wife, Katherine at the Four Seasons Resort Maui in Wailea, Hawaii.

The MLB suspended Reyes without pay through May 31 for violating its domestic abuse policy.

The Colorado Rockies then placed Reyes on waivers Thursday to grant him his release, and Reyes became a free agent Saturday.

After completing the suspension, Reyes appeared in nine games with Triple-A Albuquerque, hitting .303 with 2 home runs, 2 RBIs and 3 steals in 33 at-bats. Still, the Rockies designated him for assignment last week.

The Rockies are responsible for the remaining $39 million owed to Reyes, minus a prorated portion of the $507,500 MLB minimum that the Mets would pick up.

Reyes played nine seasons for the Mets from 2003 to 2011, batting .292 with 81 home runs and 423 RBIs.
