Padres claim Clemens off waivers from Marlins, place Jay on DL, recall Dickerson

SAN DIEGO – The Padres claimed right-hander Paul Clemens off waivers from the Marlins and transferred righty reliever Jon Edwards to the 60-day disabled list to clear room on the 40-man roster.

In 14 starts with Triple-A New Orleans this season, Clemens went 6-4 with a 4.30 ERA. He was called up to Miami on June 19, and made two starts, allowing seven earned runs in 10 innings.

During three big-league seasons, Clemens posted a 5.58 ERA with a 1.56 WHIP in 108 innings.

The Padres also made other roster moves on Tuesday. OF Jon Jay will likely miss at least a month with a broken right forearm. He was placed on the disabled list Tuesday.

Alex Dickerson was recalled from Triple-A El Paso in place of Jay.

Jay sustained the injury when he was hit by a pitch in a 6-3 win over the Nationals on June 19. The club offered no concrete timetable for his return, but according to the Padres website, manager Andy Green told the Mighty 1090 that Jay would be re-evaluated in three weeks and could be looking at a four- to six-week recovery period.

In 68 games this season, Jay was batting .296/.345/.407, while leading the National League with 24 doubles.

"He's tough to replace, there's no doubt about that," Green told the Mighty 1090, a San Diego local sports radio station. "He's a tremendous leader, he goes about his business the right way. He was great at the top of the order. ... He wasn't just getting on base, but he was getting clutch hits for us."
